Collect of the Day: Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word [Sit.

THE FIRST READING — Jeremiah 33:14–16“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Isræl and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring forth for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’.”

PSALM — Psalm 25: 3, 4; 7–9; 13Anglican chant is sung with the natural rhythm and stress of the words, which are chanted to the first note of each section until the first upright [|] which like the others mark the music’s barline. Sing one syllable to a note unless: the word is in italic type (when it should be sung to two notes) or the word is followed, or two are separated, by a midpoint [·] (when all syllables should be sung to the same note).

Show me thy|ways, O|Lord, * and|teach|me thy|paths.Lead me forth in thy|truth, and|learn me: * for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my|hope|all the day|long.Gracious and righteous|is the|Lord; * therefore, will he teach|sinners|in the|way.

THE SECOND READING — 1 Thessalonians 3 : 12–4:2Brethren: May the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all men, as we do to you, so that he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Finally, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

[Stand.Alleluia Chant: Alleluia, Alleluia. Shew us thy mercy, O Lord : and grant us thy salvation. Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL — Luke 21 :25–28; 34–36At that time Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole

“ἐγὼ τὸ Α καὶ τὸ Ω" — I am the Alpha and the Omega — appears in the first chapter of the Revelation of John. The Title and letters representing its meaning were much used in the early church; Clement of Alexandria in his Stromata, composed at the turn of the second century, writes the Alpha and the Omega, of Whom alone the end becomes beginning, and ends again at the original beginning without any break — a thought particularly appropriate as we pass from the end of one liturgical year and begin the next this first Sunday of Advent. The letters are often shown hanging from the arms of large jewelled Crosses in mosaics and frescos and many surviving Crosses have this feature, known as PENDILIA, as well. The image of our Lord with the Α and Ω is from Rome’s catacomb of Commodilla and dates to the late fourth century.
