  • As this is a virtual event, and you will not be present to give your paper ‘live’, it is a good idea to start with a picture to show people who you are.But do not spend too much time on your bio or CV as you may only have a short time to get through your material.

  • What to do• Prepare yourself and your slide deck• Prepare a script – this can be quite loose if you like to ad lib your way

through presentations – or it may be a strict word-by-word script if you prefer to work with that.

    • The procedure is quite straightforward. In outline:• Turn on the recording tab for PowerPoint • Select the ‘Slide show’ or ‘Recording’ tab and then select ‘Record Slide

show’.• This puts you into the ‘recording window’ view with buttons top left for

starting record, pausing and stopping.• Note that you can also start recording in this mode, by pressing ‘R’ on the

keyboard and stop it by holding down the Alt key and pressing S.• Press Esc to get out of recording mode.

  • Turning on the ‘Recording Tab’

    • This is the most complicated bit!• On the File tab (‘File’ in the top left-hand corner), click on Options.• In the Options box, click on the ‘Customize Ribbon’ tab on the left.• Then, in the right-hand box that lists the available ribbon tabs, select

the Recording check box and click OK.

    • Let’s do it:

  • Remember to pause between slides.

    • Each recording is attached to a specific slide so you can edit one slide at a time without having to redo your whole voice-over.

    • The recording is automatically suspended while you are changing from one slide to the next.

    • This means you need to leave about a 3-second pause after the new slide is loaded before you start to speak.

    • There are three buttons bottom right which let you toggle on or off the microphone, and (if you have a webcam) the camera and the camera preview.

    • Whenever you re-record on a slide, your old recording is erased first.

  • That’s it.

    • That is pretty much all there is to it. • Additional steps include

    • making sure you have saved the recorded version • Reviewing and editing• Improving the quality• Getting the timing right – remember that for an oral paper in the Colloquium

you will have 10 minutes and not a second longer, so make sure you time your presentation from start to finish to fit within the time slot.

  • At the end of the slide deck, you can go back to your picture or one of your team, with information on how people can contact you to discuss what you have been saying.
