• Uganda has experienced several Disasters which are caused by both Human and Natural factors.

• The office of the Prime Minister through department of Disaster preparedness coordinates all disasters occurrence in Uganda, synergistically

working through sector Ministries in Uganda.

• There is also, the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction established within OPM to technically handle disaster matters in Uganda. This Platform is comprising of Government MDAs, UN

CSOs, Private Sector and individuals. In the districts, coordination is done by District Disaster

Preparedness and Management Committee(DDPMC) and at the Sub-County is done by Sub-County Disaster Preparedness and Management Commitee as well as Parish structures.

Impact of Disaster in Uganda • Consequently there has been loss of lives, property,

destruction of crops, livestock, social fabric and exacerbated human rights violations coupled with limited and stifled Economic growth & Development particularly impinging on physical infrastructures

Some common Hazzards in UgandaStorms :These are usually associated with

strong winds, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall

Land slides : Larger water runoffs and strong winds on bare land cause deadly land slides, Common in mountainous areas

Diseases: This is common with floods and high temps –Malaria, Typhoid etc

• Disseminate early warning info to the population likely to be affected by disaster

• Coordinate preparedness activities• Update contingency plans regularly• Provision of various emergency humanitarian

assistance to the affected population and affected areas. For example, Food & Non Food relief items, Temporary shelter materials for the displaced, Clean safe water, Sanitation facilities, Public health, plus mobile clinic services

Challenges

• Coordination gaps and inadequate information, leading to duplication of services

• Operationalization of National Policy on Disaster Preparedness and management to policy guidance

• Weak institutional structures• Inadequate funding• Inadequate technical support from line ministries• Few trained and skilled staff to handle disasters• early warning systems & indicators given are not

responded to timely by the population• Local communities are not able to give accurate

information on the affected property

info from the Districts• MIS department has been established to analyze

the data and disseminate• The info is internalised by the technical team within

OPM• The National Platform is called upon to discuss

further about the info• Linked has been established between Meteorology

department for weather forecasts and climatic risks. assessments

Conclusion :

• Resource Mobilization and Funding raising strategy to support Disasters’ impacts reduction is very critical at this point

• Awareness campaigns through Radio & TV programmes about DRR and CCA should continue as well as through dissemination of IEC materials

• It is extremely essential to always contact the broad range of players in the process of developing Solutions towards Disasters.
