Weekly Stewardship Reflection

Saint Augustine, a doctor of the church, once wrote that the first, second, and third most important attitude in Christianity is humility. In today’s second reading, Saint Paul is concerned with how we conduct ourselves in our community of faith. He urges us to let our conduct be worthy of the Gospel we say that we believe; and that it all begins with humility. He asks us to consider others better than ourselves, and to serve them by looking out for their best interest, not ours. Consider how Saint Paul’s appeal to imitating Christ’s humility can en-hance your relationships.

How does a follower of Jesus deal with control, fear, and the issue of forgiveness?

Modern moral theologians often remind us that no action performed out of fear will ever help determine where we’ll spend our eternity. God only counts the things we freely do. That’s good to know when we do something “bad” because somehow or another we’re forced into it. But it’s not good to know when we do something good out of force or fear, like going to Mass as kids because our parents gave us no choice. Couple this opinion of moral theologians with today’s psychological insights that very few of our actions during any given day are completely free, and we’ve got a lot to think about.

Fear controls much of our existence. We probably do a fair amount of good every day simply because people expect us to do it, especially if we’re priests. We’re afraid to let them down, or fearful of the reputation we’d acquire if we didn’t do it. Fear can often guarantee we do the “right thing.” But it also takes away the freedom God expects us to have, and it’s a big issue in how we relate with and to God.

One of our most significant biblical passages is the Genesis 32:23-32 narrative that tells us why Israelites are called Israelites. The sacred author divides the title into three separate Hebrew words and comes up with the etiological explanation that it means “someone who wrestles with God.”

This describing Jacob wrestling with God was originally composed in a “fertility cult” environment: a culture in which organized religion guaranteed fertility for someone’s family, animals and fields by supplying them with the special words, gestures and behavior that controlled the actions of fertility gods and goddesses in their lives.

On the other hand, Jacob’s descendants — the Israelites — boasted that they wrestled with Yahweh, their God, refusing to engage in anything that could even slightly imply they were in the business of controlling him. Yahweh was not only passionate for the freedom of his people; his people were passionate for the freedom of Yahweh. Their encounters with their God entailed lots of wrestling, like all honest relationships. Any hint of control would kill their unique involvement with one another.

Just as all of us grow when we experience good relationships, so the ancient Israelites grew in their relationship with Yahweh. Their personalities and actions changed, enabling them over time to acquire completely new value systems.

Mark your calendars! It is time for our annual fundraiser FANTASY NIGHT! This year it is scheduled for October 4, 2014. Tickets are priced at $100 and can be obtained by calling the OLOS School - 498-3574, Mary’s Home Bank - 498-3820, or Lynn Morgan - 498-3372.

The school children will also be enjoying PIONEER DAY on Monday, October 13th. On this day students get to see first hand many of the activities from the "pioneer days". All students and adults are encouraged to dress in the pioneer fashion. In the past, students have enjoyed such things such as blacksmithing, butter churning, soap making and so on. If you have a special skill or know of an activity appropriate for the day and would like to share, please contact Mrs. Werdehausen in the school office. We are counting on parents and the community to make this day special!
