CHURCH NEWS

A message from Fr KeithDear Friends in Christ

Elijah’s prophetic mission was during stormy times in Israel. Ahabwas the King of Israel from about 870-852 BC. He married thepagan Jezebel who tore down altars dedicated to God andestablished worship sites to her pagan god Baal. Elijahsuccessfully confronted the priests of Baal and executed them. This enraged Jezebel and she ordered him to be killed. So Elijahwas fleeing for his life, feeling like a failure and doubting God’spresence and support in his mission.

We find Elijah, after a long desert journey, on Mount Horeb. Godhad sustained him with bread and water when he was in thedesert. On Mount Horeb God had revealed God’s self to Mosesand now God also comes to Elijah’s aid.

God comforts Elijah, not with the usual biblical signs manifestingGod’s presence – wind, earthquake and fire – but in a "tinywhispering sound." Think of it as "the voice of silence."

Elijah experiences God in silence.

That is a good guide for us, many of whom are confined to ourhomes for days. Some are lucky enough to be able to go out forwalks in nearby parks. We have learned a lesson from Elijah’sencounter. God is with us in a surprising way – not only in storms, but in silence. Despite the clutter and noise in our homes, with somany not going out, is there any way to find some silentmoments where we, like Elijah, may experience our God who isalways with us?

God Bless Fr Keith

Christa Thomas introduces herself and her workat the church... I am a past pupil of Holy Cross Convent and matriculated before theamalgamation. After school I went into a career of finance in Corporatebanking. I now own my own business, Uniformity School Shop.I have two children Richard, 29 matriculated at St David’s Marist Inanda.and Christin, 24 matriculated at Brescia House school.

I have been a parishioner since 1990 and both Richard and Christin werechristened and made their First Holy Communion in the “Old Church”.They were both keen Altar servers. Christin is now a Minister of theEucharist and is also involved in the preparation of the Children’s Mass onChristmas Eve.

I have been the Children’s liturgy co-ordinator for the last 15 years andprepare the roster for the 5 teams of teachers. The spiritual growth in thechildren is a blessing and reward for me. I have really missed the childrenin the lockdown and look forward to the Sunday when we can all see eachother again and share our experiences.

Children's LiturgyChildren’s liturgy is the Word of God suitably adapted to make it relevant to the lives and experiences of

young school going children that attend the 10h00 Sunday Mass. The children are introduced to the Old

and New Testament, the life of Jesus, the Mass and Catholic values. It gives them the opportunity to

understand the Gospel message and be involved in the Eucharistic celebration in a more participative

manner.

Children’s liturgy started in the parish in the early 90’s. On any given Sunday, we have approximately 80

children in attendance.

The children begin Mass in church with their parents and then, once the teachers have been blessed by

the priest, they leave with them. They then all proceed to the church hall for their own celebration of the

Liturgy. An altar with a crucifix and candles is set up in the hall. They sing songs, recite prayers and then

listen to the Gospel of the day and discuss it. At this point, they are then brought back into the church with

their teachers at the Offertory of the Mass and re-join their parents. The children attending the liturgy are

selected to take up the gifts to the altar.

The teachers who lead the Children’s liturgy do not have to be qualified, but they must express an interest

in working with and developing children's understanding of the Mass rituals.

New teachers are always welcome to join our group. If you feel like you would like to get

involved, please contact us.
