In 1958, Mr Zubir Said was commissioned to compose a song for the City Council of Singapore to use at its official functions. The song was meant to be a patriotic song in Malay, with the theme of "Onward Singapore". The song made its debut at the re-opening of the renovated Victoria Theatre on 6 September 1958.

The City Council Song had a longer verse and melody than the present day National Anthem. Its longer verse encouraged the people of Singapore to help each other and to live in peace and harmony, in addition to progressing towards happiness.

After Singapore became a self-governing state under British rule on 3 June 1959, the City Council Song was further refined and it was adopted as the state National Anthem. Specifically, eight bars from the verse were removed and the lyrics were made more concise.

Although I'm thousands of miles away from home, I can feel the grief and outpouring of emotion of my home country from the passing of our beloved former Minister Mentor Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.

Growing up in Singapore, I was constantly reminded by my parents and grandparents how incredible he was and how much our country owes to him. I was always aware of how lucky I was to have grown up in such a beautiful, safe, multicultural and progressive country.

I read that before he passed he was worried that the people of Singapore were united enough - if only he could see how everyone stood in solidarity through the rain and crowds - one people,

one nation ready to build on his legacy.

I hope this this version of our national anthem can be a small token of my family's gratitude. A huge thank you to Uncle Adam for helping with the beautiful arrangement and my sister Trina for helping to film!

No matter where I am in the world, Singapore will always be home. Majulah Singapura!

A tribute to Lee Kuan Yew. Onward Singapore.

“To the young and to the not so old, I say, look at that horizon, follow that rainbow, go ride it.”

Some from the music industry came together to record this rendition of the Singapore national anthem to pay tribute to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and to encourage Singaporeans to unite and continue his legacy. Over a short two days, everything was put together for the video to be ready by 29 March - the day of his funeral. Farewell Mr Lee. Majulah Singapura.

Stefanie Sun Yanzi and Agnes Yue were in China and could not record in the studio with us but they sent us their audio recordings so we could mix into this music video. They shared this with us:
