Solomon died, and his son Rehoboam will be

next on the throne.

Solomon had turned from God.

His wives pulled him away from the True and Living God.

1 Kings 12 1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) 3 That they sent and called him.

The prophet Ahijah had told Jeroboam that God would give him ten of the tribes. because Solomon had backslid.

Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam to prevent God’s Will from coming to pass.

Jeroboam fled to Egypt.

3b And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. Opportuni

By reducing the tax load and by lightening the labor conscription requirements on his people, King Rehoboam could have won the support of his petitioners.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.

But remember, God had already promised Jeroboam that he would rule

the ten tribes in the north.

Page 8: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

8

Note also: These people were more interested in

having lower taxes and less labor conscription than

in having the king turn the nation back to God.

Not only had Solomon backslid;

The people had too.

5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. 6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people? 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants forever. They advised humility.

Page 10: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

10

8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him: 9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?

Rehoboam didn’t like the counsel of humility, so he sought different counsel.

The young men counseled pride.

Page 11: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

11

10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. 11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

You ain’t seen nothing yet!

Page 12: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

12

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him; 14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

This was certain to provoke rebellion.

God’s Will is done.

Page 13: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

13

15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that He might perform His Saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat. Inevitable outcome!God’s Judgment was already passed.

But understand, God didn’t force Rehoboam to act contrary to his own nature.

God foreknew what Bo would do.

Page 14: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

14

This needs to be our constant mindset.

“I will do what God wants me to do.”

Page 15: 1 kings 12a god's will shall be done

15

God shall accomplish His Will.God has many good things planned

for His church.

I want to be a part of that Plan.

I don’t want to miss a thing.

Revelation 3 14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of My Mouth.

Can a church miss out on the Plan of God?

That church would cease to exist as a

church.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Matthew 16 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Romans 12 9 Let love be without dissimulation (hypocrisy). Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

(NIV) 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
