2 Getting Started

The title screen willbe shown when youstart the game. Ifyou are playing forthe first time, onlythe option NewGame will appear.

Bonuses(p. 21)

This will appear afteryou create a savefile. Select it toenjoy variousadditional features.

3 Saving and Quitting

When quitting the game, be sure tosave your current progressbeforehand. Once the game hasfinished saving, you can then turnoff your Nintendo 3DS system.

Save your current progress bytouching the Save icon in theProfessor's Trunk (p. 9).

Saving Data

● Do not turn the power off, resetthe system or remove GameCards/SD Cards while saving.Make sure not to get dirt in theterminals. These actions couldresult in permanent data loss.

● Do not use external accessoriesor software to modify your savedata, as this can lead to aninability to progress or loss ofsave data. Any modification ispermanent, so be careful.

♦ You can create up to three savefiles.

♦ SpotPass™ (p. 23) data will besaved to the SD Card. Please becareful when inserting andremoving SD Cards.

4 In-Game Controls

Control the majority of the gamefeatures by touching and sliding thestylus on the Touch Screen. As youprogress through the game you willsometimes need to use and .There are also some puzzles wheremoving the Nintendo 3DS systemaround may help you solve them.

5 Conducting Investigations

Progress through the story whileconducting investigations. The basisof Professor Layton's investigationis gathering information by travellingto various locations, searching forclues and interviewing people alongthe way. You will encounter a widerange of puzzles over the course ofyour adventure.

6 Movement Mode

Use this mode to move around fromone place to another. Touch anorange icon to change location.

7 Investigation Mode

Touch the Investigation icon on theMovement Mode screen to go to theInvestigation Mode screen. Slide thestylus on the Investigation Panel tomove the magnifying glass aroundand examine the area. The icon willchange in various ways when youmove over areas of interest, so keepa sharp eye out!

Slide the stylus on this panel tomove the magnifying glass icon onthe upper screen. Tap the TouchScreen to check the point under theicon.

Touch to return to the MovementMode screen.

While moving the magnifying glassaround, there are times when it willturn blue ( ). When this happens,tap the Touch Screen to zoom in onthat spot and you will be able toinvestigate hidden areas that youcouldn't see before.Touch ZOOM OUT to return to theprevious screen. Touch to go tothe Movement Mode screen.

Zooming

When themagnifying glassturns orange ( )over a person, tapthe lower screen tostart a conversation with them.Touch the lower screen or press to advance the dialogue. Even ifyou've already spoken to someoneonce, they may say somethingdifferent the next time you talk tothem.

Talking

Various things, such as hint coinsand puzzles, are hidden on theupper screen. Be sure to searchevery last nook and cranny! Theappearance of the magnifying glassicon will change in various wayswhen you move it over certainpoints. Checking these points mayreveal hidden items.

Hidden Objects

On the Hunt for Hint Coins!You will need hint coins to beable to view hints when solvingpuzzles (p. 8). Hint coins arehidden in various places, so youwill need to search carefully tofind them. Look out for pointswhere the magnifying glass iconturns orange. Leave no stoneunturned!

8 Solving Puzzles

There are many puzzles hiddenthroughout this adventure. Search invarious places and solve them all!You will also come across somepuzzles which you must solve inorder to progress with the story.

When you come across a hiddenpuzzle or talk to someone who hasa puzzle for you, an introductoryscreen will be displayed. Touch thelower screen to advance to thePuzzle screen.

1. Find a Puzzle!

❶ Picarat value

The number of picarats you willreceive if you solve the puzzle.

❷ Total score

The total number of picarats youhave earned so far.

All About PicaratsPicarats are points that indicate apuzzle's difficulty. Solve lots ofpuzzles and collect picarats toincrease your total score andunlock extra content in the TopSecret section in Bonuses(p. 21) after completing thegame.

The puzzle description andinstructions for solving the puzzlewill be displayed here. Read theinstructions and examine the puzzlecarefully before attempting to solveit. Touch the lower screen whenyou're ready to start the puzzle.

2. Check the PuzzleScreen

Touch or slide the stylus on thelower screen depending on the typeof puzzle and the answerrequirements. A number of differenticons will be displayed on the lowerscreen. These will differ dependingon the puzzle.

3. Solve the Puzzle

Keats the CatThere are many hidden puzzles inthe game. However, it is possibleto miss a few and continue thestory without finding them all.These puzzles will be sent toKeats the puzzle cat, who willmake an appearance as the gameprogresses.

Touch the Trunk icon to open theProfessor's Trunk and view itscontents.

Receiving Notifications(SpotPass)

Your system will automaticallysearch for a compatible internetaccess point and receivenotifications when it is in SleepMode, even when the software isnot running.
