MEGA TASTING DAY – CHEESE, WINE & CHOCOLATE

CELLAR TOUR: Everyone will go through the cellar and be taught how wines are made from start to finish. They will learn how to differentiate between different cultivars by using their senses, ie, the way the wine looks, the way it smells and the way it tastes. This information is vital for the next stage of the day.

BLIND TASTING: suitable for drinkers & non-drinkers• Each person will have a tasting card* on which they will write their names and whether they are drinkers or non-drinkers. They will also have a sheet of paper describing the wines that they are tasting. • However, they will not know which Cultivar it is for example, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay etc. • From what they have learnt in the cellar tour and from the descriptions they are reading they have to guess which wine they are tasting and write it down on their tasting card in numerical order to which they taste. The non tasters will have to guess from the colour and smell of the wine. • Once all the wines have been tasted the cards will be marked and a group total will be established.

* TASTING CARDThe tasting card will look something like this...

NAME: TEAM: 1.2.3.4.5.TOTAL POINTS EARNED:

Each member will write down the wine they think they are tasting in the order in which they taste. The cards will be marked by the person sitting next to them. At this stage each person will think they are playing for themselves but they are in actual playing for a team prize.

CHEESE TASTING: At Fairview wine estate – a brief descrption of the cheese-making process, followed by tasting. Groups must answer questions pertaining to the cheeses & fill in answers on their group questionairres.

CHOCOLATE TASTING: In Franschoek – a demonstration of chocolate making followed by tasting. Groups must answer ques-tions pertaining to the chocolates & fill in answers on their group questionnaires.

A picnic lunch and further informal tasting will be enjoyed at a wine farm.

KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS A fun morning or afternoon

The group will be divided into teams and rotate through the various tasks as follows:

• Singing ( to take place on the amphitheatre stage) - a Black singer to teach the “ click song” - each group to sing for points out of 10

• Beading ( to take place on blankets on the lawn) - each participant to make a SA flag “ in “Zulu Love letter” style. Local beaders to demonstrate and help. A point for each flag completed in the set time.

• Artwork - Each person in the team gets a piece of a picture plus a set of coloured pencils and must reproduce their piece as accurately as possible. The 15 pieces are then put together to make a group picture. The original will be revealed to the groups. The pictures can be taken back & framed as a memento of the day.

• Spear throwing - on open lawn - points awarded for accuracy & distance

• Herb Garden - teams get clues to the names of various plants and fill these into a crossword. Highlighted letters in each word are the clue to the final answer, which is to be found in the herb garden. They must locate this plant and give its Latin name. Points for each correct word.

• Orienteering - follow directions using a compass, to Lady Anne Barnard’s Bath & retrieve answers to questions en route.

COST: R795.00 Nett pp, min 30 pax** We will take less, but the min fee applies in each caseExcludes prizes – to be provided at the discretion of the companyPlease see end of document for Terms and Condition

TO END: All groups meet back at the amphitheatre and sing their song for the others, then all groups sing it together. The various paintings will be displayed on stage along with the original and the best picture will receive 3 bonus points, the 2nd 2 and the third 1. Final points will then be tallied and the winning group announced.

POOTJIEKOS & FUN GAMES CHALLENGE

The group will divide into teams. Each team will receive a dif-ferent, numbered recipe (these will be drawn out of a hat). This number will become the group number. Fires will be lit by each group in the fireplace with their corresponding group number, in order to generate coals for the pootjiekos competition. Once fires are lit, the games will commence, working in the same groups e.g.

• Pine cone stack (groups have 5 mins to collect as many cones as possible and to build them into as high a stack as possible. Two team members must use their bodies together as a human foundation for the stack. Groups may use the bodies in whatev-er way they choose. Stacks will be measured with a tape mea-sure from the ground to the tip of the highest cone - the highest stack wins points)

• Spear throwing (like darts, but on the ground. Point awarded for proximity to bull’s eye. Sound to be used by the group to guide blind participants)

• Orienteering (starting from the group fireplace and using a compass, the group must follow a series of clues leading to “treasures” – these will be all the neces- sary ingredients to be used in the various pootjies)

At this point the coals should be almost ready for commence-ment of cooking compe-tition. Groups prepare pootjies and when these are simmering away, the games continue....

Some of the games will include...

• Tossing the caber • Moon Walk: groups attached in centipede form, ankle-to-ankle,

must negotiate obstacles across a set landscape.• Soccer goal shoot (Sound to be used by the group to guide

blind participants)• Blind tasting -The group will all draw straws to decide who is

the official taster. He or she will be blindfolded and then will be fed various fooodstuffs and have to correctly identify them. Points will be awarded or deducted accordingly - this is a lot more difficult than it sounds!

We tally up points thus far, while groups add the final touches to their pootjies. (The final outcome will be decided by the pootjie tasting).
