Dr. Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor Back to Basics: Quilting & Sewing This Monday, January 11 at 6:30pm in Room WC117 Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you are welcome to join us. Last spring, we were able to send 31 quilts to children in an orphanage in Guatemala. If you join us, you can help us work on a new group project, or work on a project of your own. For more information, contact Pam at [email protected] or 272-5583. Churchwide Celebrate Recovery Thursday Nights at 6:00pm in Room DC121 Celebrate Recovery is a special community of men’s and women’s groups. You can find safety and support for dealing with life’s hurts, habits, and hang-ups through a 12-step discipleship and recovery program. For more information, please call 596-8600 x266. Astronauts James Irwin and David Scott landed on the surface of the moon in the Falcon as a part of the Apollo XV mission. They explored 17.4 miles of the moon’s surface. But as he made the 250,000 mile journey home, Irwin noted: “As I was returning to earth, I realized that I was a servant, not a celebrity. I am here as God’s servant on planet earth to share what I have experienced that others might know the glory of God.” So true. True significance is found in service to our great Master, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. The two New Testament offices which are listed in scripture include pastors and deacons. As a church, we “are not hasty in the laying on of hands” (1 Timothy 5:22). These gentlemen have been “tested first so that they may then serve as deacons” (1 Timothy 3:10). They set the pace in the race. This weekend, we will ordain two new deacon-servants – Falus Polston and Ian Rowlands and recognize previously ordained Chris Bailey, joining our other good men in one of the most significant worship times of the year. There will be a time of personal testimonies, my biblical challenge, and the laying-on-of-hands prayer time. All are invited to attend. The word for deacon (diakonos in Greek) can be translated as servant or minister. Yet, all believers are to be “ministers (servants) of the New Covenant in the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:6). That is our job description as we serve the Lord and others through the power of the Holy Spirit. However, some are uniquely qualified to be examples to the believers as servant-leaders. The word which described the first deacons in Acts 7 was a picture of kicking up dust while rushing to serve with eagerness. Actually, all Christians are to serve “with sincerity of heart fearing the Lord” (Colossians 3:22), while also working “heartily” for Him (Colossians 3:23). In this new year, may all of us not ask, “How may I gain and attain?” but instead, “How may I surrender and serve?” In the world-wide church, there is a great “energy crisis,” with too many, doing too much, with too little. I want to challenge you to find a place of service. We are not trying to sear you with white-hot pressure to make you feel guilty. We also resist the surge method that seeks quick enthusiasm, but dies suddenly, leaving you feeling empty and betrayed by a bait-and-switch approach. The best method is a summons from God, because “It is the Lord Christ Whom you are serving, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward” (Colossians 3:24). There are dozens of potential places of service. Pray for God to reveal your passion, gifts, talents, and His opportunities. Talk at least to John David Edie, our Pastor of Discipleship, or one of our other pastors who oversees different areas. Speaking of willing hearts, I am very grateful for those who have been so understanding concerning the new Worship Center service at 11:00am on Sunday and the Chapel service. I thank God for our pastors who will be preaching in Chapel over the next month while the needed technology is completed. In order to “keep us all on the same page,” I am giving them the themes and notes of my messages, freeing them to apply their unique interpretations. We may be in different rooms, but are one Body, all hopefully asking “What can I do for others and for the Lord?” and not, “What’s in it for me?” *There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00am worship services.
