Save our Soil through Sustainable Farming

The long hot summer across Eastern Washington this year has taken its toll in more ways than one. Not only was the fire danger a constant worry along with the hazardous air quality due to smoke and dust, but the topsoil took a beating too. With temperatures over 100 degrees starting in June, the soils dried out quickly. Farm fields that had been worked several times during the spring quickly ran out of moisture and the resulting crop yields reflected that stress on the plants. Fields that had been no-tilled and had a cover of residue to provide shade fared much better. But the worst possible set of circumstances of high winds and temperatures, low humidity and no moisture with unprotected soils occurred again this year; and by some strange twist of of fate, on exactly the same week in August that the Haboob hit last summer.

The enormous dust storms that hit Central and Eastern Washington this year and last were destructive and danger-ous. Portions of Inter-state 90, Hwy 2 west of Spokane and Hwy 395 south of Ritzville were the scenes of multiple accidents and had to be closed for several hours. For the most part, the blowing dust that turned day into night on those highways was soil that had been eroded from farm fields, especially those that were in sum-mer fallow with noth-ing to cover the soil and protect it from the wind. The environmental consequences, while enormous, were eclipsed by the loss of life. The trauma to humans and animals and the cost in real dollars is so unnecessary.

The effects of wind and water on rock are what, over the course of several millions of years, have made

and deposited the deep, rich loess soils of the region. But in just over a hundred years of farming, nearly half of the soils that were there are now gone, washed and blown away.

A hundred years ago, the only way to farm the rolling hills of the Palouse on a large scale was with

horses and oxen. The technology of the day was primi-tive by modern standards, but quite effective in open-

ing up large tracts of land for production of crops. Unfortunate-ly, one piece of that primitive technology that turned over mil-lions of acres of native prairie in the Palouse and other areas of the country is still in use today: the plow.

It wasnt long, probably the first win-ter and spring after being plowed, that the Palouse hills started losing topsoil at rates of multiple tons per acre per year. Once the native Palouse Prairie was destroyed and the

soils were no longer protected by permanent vegeta-tive cover, severe erosion was not only possible, but predictable. Mechanization allowed for higher pro-duction levels, as well as higher rates of erosion, as the farm implements were pulled up the hills by powerful tractors.

When you see a tractor out in a field plowing this fall and observe the cloud of dust blowing behind it, you are seeing first-hand soil erosion in action. Mul-tiply the amount of soil leaving that farm that day by a factor of several million acres over years and years, and you can start to grasp the enormity of the problem. As long as the plow is being pulled through the soils of the Palouse, the Columbia Basin or anywhere else in the world being farmed, there will be serious erosion. It is absolutely unnecessary. Yes, of course we have to farm in order to eat, but we dont have to stay with or accept the use of the ancient technology of a plow. In fact, in order to provide a sustainable supply of food for this nation, we must get rid of the plow and move to sustainable methods more in keeping with the ad-vances in technology available now like direct seeding and no-till. No-till is a method of placing the seed and fertilizer in the ground without disturbing the residue from the previous years crop. That ensures that the ground is not left exposed to wind and water erosion. Covering the ground in one pass in contrast to five, six or even seven passes in a conventional system saves a great deal of fuel, and time as well.

With decades of study, test plots and the mountain of evidence pointing to conventional farming tech-niques as being responsible for the well documented rates of erosion, why are farmers still pulling a plow? Fortunately, the rates of adoption of no-till and direct seeding are rapidly increasing and probably will con-tinue as public and governmental pressures continue to be applied. Perhaps the answer lies in the power of our food purchasing dollars, which, of course, will influence policy and market pressures. Sustainable farming is the ability to provide food and fiber from an ever decreasing land base for an ever growing population for as long as there are people and ani-mals to feed. That cannot happen if we continue to let our soils be displaced and destroyed. Our precious topsoil is the only thing we have to grow onWe can-not live without it.

    By Jim Armstrong

Using no-till and direct seeding, residue like this can be left on the field after harvest and either left there all winter to help catch and retain snow and moisture for a spring crop or can be planted to a fall crop without

    having to work the ground.

Grass field just seeded to spring barley using a no-till drill. No soil will ever erode from this field.

Spring seeding after working the ground at least 5 times
