Welcome back to the start of a new academic year! I hope that all our children and families enjoyed the summer break and it has

been lovely to hear from the children this week all the exciting things they got up to during the break. It has also been a pleasure to

welcome the children into school and they have settled well into their new classes, they have been a credit to the school this week

as they have gone about their learning.

A special welcome to all our new pupils, families and staff, particularly our new Reception children. We hope that you enjoy a long

and successful education at Winton Primary.

As a school we are beginning the term with a topic called The Power of 100 – it is a celebration of Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday and our

learning in this area relates to his work and introducing a Growth Mind-set to children. At the end of the fortnight we hope to fill the

school with the children’s excellent work, have children who are excited and able to rise to the challenges they will face this year as

well as being settled in their new classes. Full topic and curriculum information will come out to you after this fortnight.

Congratulations to the following staff who got married over the holiday; Miss Simmonds in the office who is now Mrs Scadding, Miss

Mulkern who is now Mrs Tennant and Mr Wilson. We wish them a long and happy married life!

We have a number of new staff this year and welcome to the school Miss Deacon & Miss Humphreys (Year 2), Miss Bessant & Miss

Johns (Year 3), Miss Atkinson & Miss Parkes (Year 4), Mr Hassan (Year 5), Miss Cochrane (Year 6), Mr Burt (PE) and Mr Wallace (Music).

I wish everyone success for the year and hope that all our children and families enjoy an exciting and productive academic year!

School Structure

As many of you will be aware, last year we introduced a schools within the school approach. The aim of this is to make certain that

everyone knows who to talk to if they have an issue. It also ensures that everyone knows everybody and the school has a friendly

and welcoming primary school ethos. If you have an issue, please discuss it with your child’s class teacher. If this does not resolve

the situation, then you can talk to the year leader. There is also a phase leader for each part of the school who is responsible for

running that part of a school on a day to day basis. Beyond that you can talk to the Head of School or Headteacher. The structure is

shown below and hopefully is clear and easy to understand. If you have any queries do ask! Should you be concerned about the

safeguarding of a child or their welfare talk to Mrs James. If you have a concern about a member of staff talk to Mr Tarchetti.

Car Park Safety

As we begin a new year I would like to remind everyone that we ask you not to drive on to the school site unless absolutely

necessary. Despite having a sizeable car park there is never enough space and using the car park always leads to issues.

We have a park and stride scheme in place where parents can park, free, at Redhill Park or can park in the surrounding

roads and walk the last part of their journey to school. This makes for a much more pleasurable beginning and end to

the day for the children and is often quicker than using the car park.

Should parents drive onto site then any issues are their responsibility to resolve e.g. being blocked in. The school expects

everyone on the site to conduct themselves in a polite and courteous manner.

Over the summer, Bournemouth Borough Council completed some improvements to the car park as part of completing

our building work. Bollards have been put on the children’s crossing and I would ask that no-one parks in the yellow zone

near that crossing. Anyone who does will be required to move immediately as it presents a threat to the safety of our

children. The other improvement was to prevent people crossing between cars or across traffic. Barriers have been

placed and red footprints show children where to walk to reach a crossing. This is particularly important if they are

coming from the central island. Whilst many parents cross their children away from the crossings we want children to

learn to be safe on roads so that once they are independent they are also safe. Please do not, therefore, cross between

cars or across the traffic but use the crossings provided. Even if it involves walking further it is a vital part of training

children to be safe on roads. A map below explains this more clearly!

Governors’ News

The governors would like to take the opportunity, at the beginning of a new year, to introduce some new faces.

Joining us this year we have Helen Uren, Paul Gaston, Sarah Fisher, Mark Hames, and Richard Scott. You can find

out more about them on the school website where you can find information about all of our governors.

Mr Tarchetti

Headteacher

A big welcome to all parents from the PE staff at Winton Primary. We are

committed to laying firm foundations to enable healthy lifestyles for all of our

children alongside high quality Physical Education.

There are a huge amount of exciting PE and School Sporting opportunities available to our children this term. Firstly, all

year groups have a range of extra-curricular sporting clubs in which the children can be signed up to.

Secondly the first week of PE lessons will involve golf festivals for all children from Years 2-6. Trophies will be awarded to

the classes in each year group with the highest amount of points from 8 different golf activities.

We are starting an exciting new venture with Victoria Avenue Tennis Club. Over the course of the year (starting with Year

4) year groups will use all of the 16 courts at the tennis club to participate in 90 minute cardio tennis sessions. This will

result in the whole year group going to the tennis club at the same time and experiencing a tennis festival to end the unit

of work in a fun and competitive way.

A new year brings a new whole school dance and we have a great feel good dance that your child will be learning over

the next few weeks. Look out for it at some of our whole school events as the year goes on!

Finally please make sure your child has a named PE kit in school. This PE kit should remain in school

all week, every week as apart from your child's 2 PE lessons per week there are also other

opportunities that sometimes happen in and out of curriculum time to enhance learning. With so

many exciting opportunities available it is important that everyone has their kit to ensure safety

and best performance.

Have a fantastic weekend and don't hesitate to come and see us if you have any queries.

Mr Millar and Mr Burt.

Pastoral Care

Welcome back to all of our parents/ carers

I hope that you had a good break.

Please remember that I have a weekly 'drop in' on Mondays from 9 - 10am.

I am outside the Reception gate every morning from 8:30 - 9:00am, if you would like to talk to me about any pastoral

issues or concerns that you may have with your child/children.

We are running the triple P, parenting course again from 21st September 2016. If you feel that you would like to do

this please speak to me before Wednesday 14th September in order that I can complete the paperwork and enrol you

on the course.

Each month, Mrs L. Hudson (ELS Lead) and I will hold a parents' coffee morning, where you are all welcome to come

and meet and discuss any concerns you may have.

Our first one this year is on Thursday 29th September 2016, we will be running a Macmillan coffee morning to raise

funds for Macmillan cancer research and to meet with you all.

I hope to see you there.

Thank you

K. Chapman

Pastoral Lead

Lunchtime Activities

Over the next few weeks, the Pastoral Team will be organising some new and exciting lunchtime activities for your

children.

We are looking for the following items and would be grateful for any donations you may be able to make:-

• Dressing-up costumes including hats, helmets, cloaks etc.

• Adult socks

• Packs of cards (Top Trumps, Snap, Happy Families etc.)

Please send any donations in marked for my attention.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Hudson – ELS Lead

REMINDER

We would like to remind you that the school has a strict no smoking policy anywhere within

the school grounds or in vehicles parked inside the school gates. This now includes the use of

vapour/smokeless cigarettes. Thank you for your co-operation.

We are a “NUT FREE” school as a number of children attending the school have severe

allergies to nuts and products containing or potentially containing nuts. This means that

children are not allowed to have peanut butter or chocolate spread in their sandwiches.

Packets of nuts are also not permitted.

Similarly, we would ask that chocolate bars are not included in your child’s lunch box,

however, chocolate coated biscuit bars are permitted e.g. penguin, wafer bars.

Thank you for your help in keeping this a safe and healthy school for everyone.

FOUNDATION

Do you ever wonder what your child is doing in school?

To help you keep up to date with your child’s learning we write a weekly information sheet which is displayed on

the classrooms’ windows and also posted on the school website.

This will give you short bullet points outlining the different learning activities your child is doing, which books they

are reading, letters they are learning to name but a few things!

Reading

On your child’s first day in school they will have brought home their Home

School Diary and also a reading book to share with you. They will have the

opportunity to change this book daily, so please make sure the book is in their

book bags.

Please record when you read to your child, or when they read to you in the

reading log in the Home School Diary. We will do the same when we read with

your child. For every 3 different dates there is a signed reading log your child will earn a WOW point- the more

often they read the more points they will earn and points means prizes!

Mrs James, Head of School, Reception

YEAR 1 & 2

In year 1 the children have had a brilliant start to the year. All of them have

settled well into their new classes and have impressed their class teachers

with their super behaviour. They have been immersed in the world of Roald

Dahl and have been learning how to re-tell the story of Esio Trot.

In year 2 the children have also had an impressive start and are working really

hard to earn their WOW points. After being back just a few days, they have

impressed their teachers with their tremendous hard work. Your child should have brought home a letter

about a planned trip to the Sea City museum for you to complete and return to school as soon as possible.

After a few days, we already have a lot of lost property which unfortunately we are unable to return to its

owner. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD'S P.E KIT AND SCHOOL UNIFORM ARE NAMED with your

child's first and last name.

P.E Days Year 1: Tuesday and Thursday

Year 2: Wednesday and Thursday

Miss Marshall, Assistant Head, Year 1 and 2

YEAR 3 & 4

We are so impressed with the way that all the children in Year 3 and 4 have started back to school ready

to learn, and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them and you on this. What a great first

week back!

This week we have all been getting to know our new classes and teachers. There have been a few exciting

changes and there has been lots of excitement about earning 'Wow!' points instead of sparkle points this

year.

Year 3 will be making a Summer Holidays display next week, so if you have any pictures or postcards from

your holiday, we would be very grateful if we could borrow them. Please send them in to your child's class

teacher.

Year 3 Swimming will start on Tuesday 20th September. 3LB and 3SB will go for

the first 6 weeks, followed by 3DC and 3LJ after half term. Letters have gone out

to 3LB and 3SB explaining these details.

Year 3 and 4 are also working on a new spelling programme in school which has interactive lessons as well

as a practise book with questions. Each week the children will log the spellings they have found more

challenging in their own log books. They will be able to bring these log books home and practise them

with you. We do ask though that these spelling log books stay in your child’s book bag as they will be used

in school every day.

The children will also be starting their Maths Mental Challenges next week and there is a section in the

diary which explains this system. However the national expectation for Year 4 pupils is now for each child

to know all their times tables up to the 12X table. This is something we really encourage you to support

your child with at home as this will help them progress in their mental maths and other areas of maths

too in both Year 3 and 4.

Please read through and share your child's fantastic new Home School diary which has lots of new and

updated sections such as our new Wow! points reward system. Please also read the Home School

Agreement on page 7 and sign at the top.

The expectation still remains that the children read for 20 minutes a day at home and in order to receive

the maximum Wow! points a week they need to read on three occasions over separate days in order to

earn a Wow! point (3 days = 1 Wow point). We are really lucky to have an excellent collection of new

reading books for the children to enjoy.

Please help your child fill in the weekly reading log in their diaries and in order to receive their Wow!

points; we must see a parent/carer signature or initials for each reading session.

Please make sure your child has a named water bottle in school which they can keep in their classroom

and that all uniform including PE kits are named.

It has been a great start to the term! If you have any queries please see your child’s class teacher. Many

thanks.

Mrs Lidster, Assistant Head, Year 3 and 4

YEAR 5 & 6

JARS PLEASE

In their first week back at school, Year 5 have been reading extracts from Roald Dahl’s autobiographical book ‘Boy’

which tells the stories of his youth. They have also begun to research influential people who have changed the world in

some way while developing their portraiture skills so they are able depict these people in art. Next week the children

will begin to think about their dream world and what changes they would make to the world to improve it. To display

this work Year 5 will need lots of glass jars so if you are able to donate any washed out food jars please send them in

with your children.

Year 6 have also been busy studying Roald Dahl and in particular, illustrations by Quentin Blake. They have each

designed a new bug for a Roald Dahl book and will continue with this next week. Look out for blog posts coming soon.

READING EXPECTATIONS

The teachers in Year 5 and 6 adopt a range of different approaches such as whole class reading, group sessions and

individual reading. It is vital that children can access a text and answer a range of questions. These questions might

focus on retrieving information, interpreting and making predictions and discussing the language and structure of the

text. You can also help at home by ensuring that your child reads three times a week and signing their diary so that they

can earn their reward. We know that the skill of reading and understanding text is so important and have agreed that

children who are not reading at home will be asked to read in their own time at school. Please support us by ensuring

that your child reads regularly at home and brings their diary into school on a daily basis. If you are struggling to find

materials that your child wants to read please speak to class teachers who have a bank of age appropriate

recommended texts.
