We’re now busier than ever, which means fi nding quality time to spend together can

be a challenge. But one of the best ways that parents can spend more time with their kids is by doing the things they love. That’s why family gaming nights can be an ideal way to stay connected.

“We know that gaming together can help nurture positive values, teach important life skills and lead to a greater overall feeling of con-nectedness,” says Heather Potter, strategic communications manager at Nintendo.

Ready to get gaming? Potter shares her top tips for your next family game night.

Introduce them to the classics

For the ultimate in early video game education, Potter encourages parents to start with the classics. “It’s

amazing how parents can relive the magic of their childhood with their own kids by playing their old favou-rites,” says Potter. “In addition to the new games featuring iconic characters like Mario and Zelda, it’s also easy to play the old favourites. Nintendo Switch Online has a huge library of classic games that parents can teach their kids, making new memories in the process.”

a little help goes a long way

Looking for a good gaming expe-rience with your little ones? Choose games with easy or assist modes.

“This is a great way to not only intro-duce your kids to video games, and it also helps them to really engage and feel a sense of accomplishment,” says Potter. “For example, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a smart steering option to help young players stay on track.”

get co-operativeWhen kids are in the eight to 12 age range, their love of video games can really take fl ight. At this stage and beyond, Potter recommends that par-ents look for co-operative games – ones that lets them team up with their kids to work toward a common goal, teaching communication and team-work skills along the way. “Super Mario Odyssey has an incredible two-player co-op mode. The fi rst player controls Mario, while the second con-trols Cappy, Mario’s hat and main ally. Another great co-op game is Overcooked! 2, a game in which play-ers work together to cook up a storm in a series of chaotic, crazy levels.” ■

Insuffi cient sleep causes more problems than many people may know. Fatigue after a poor night’s sleep might seem

like an inconvenience that can be easily rectifi ed, but the long-term effects of

insuffi cient sleep are signifi cant.

How to make bedrooms more conducive to sleep

According to the National Sleep Foundation, researchers have found a link between insuffi cient sleep and an elevated risk for type

2 diabetes. In one such study exploring that potential link, researchers asked healthy adults to sleep just four hours per night for six nights. At the conclusion of that period, participants’ ability to break down glucose had decreased by an average of 40 percent and reached levels that are consistent with those of older adults at risk for diabetes.

Insuffi cient sleep may be linked to any of a host of factors, including one’s bedroom environment. An environment that promotes restful sleep can help people suff ering from insomnia or restlessness improve the quality of their sleep. The NSF off ers the following tips to make bedrooms more conducive to sleep.

set the right temperatureThe NSF notes that research indicates a

bedroom temperature of roughly 18 C makes for the best sleep. Human beings’ body temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, reaching their lowest level around 5 a.m. each day before slowly climbing as morning begins. A room that is too warm overnight may interfere with this natural dip, leading to restlessness. If necessary, install a programmable thermostat in the bedroom so the temperature in the room remains steady and in line with your body’s natural temperature fl uctuations.

address allergens Some people may trace their sleeping

diffi culties to allergies. Dust and pollen in the

bedroom can make for a disruptive night’s sleep. Wash bedding once per week in hot water if dust mites are proving problematic. If pillows cannot be washed, dry them using high heat to kill dust mites. In addition, cover the mattress in a mattress protector that guards against allergens and dust mites. If pollen is fi nding its way into the bedroom, always keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season.

use a white noise machineNoise is another potential contributor to

poor sleep. The NSF notes that some people may have their sleep interrupted by noise even if they don’t know it. White noise machines are often used to help infants sleep, but such machines can be just as eff ective at helping adults. The NSF notes that the constant ambient sound created by white noise machines masks activity both inside and outside the house, helping men and women enjoy more restful sleep.

draw blinds, shades or curtains

Waking up to sunlight each day might be nice, but that morning sunlight may be interrupting your sleep. Early morning rays from the sun might be triggering your body to wake up before it’s had adequate rest, so make sure blinds, shades and curtains are drawn before going to bed at night so you are not woken up prematurely in the morning.

Making bedrooms more conducive to sleep is one way men and women can improve the quality of their nightly sleep. ■

how to establish ahousehold budgetHousehold budgets can help families thrive

and survive should unforeseen fi nancial issues arise. Establishing a household

budget is no small task, as numerous factors must be considered to come up with a budget that se-cures families’ futures without sacrifi cing their ev-eryday quality of life.

financesTo develop a budget everyone in the household can live with, heads of household should fi rst get a fi rm grasp of their fi nances. First determine how much money is coming in and how much money is in savings. Then make a list of the family’s fi -nancial obligations, including costs associated with housing, food, transportation, utilities, and other monthly bills like student loan payments. Be thorough in this examination and you should get an idea of how you’re spending your money and where you can make any cuts if need be.

behaviorsHeads of household should make honest assess-ments of their behaviors with regard to money. Are you prone to impulse shopping? How closely do you track your daily spending? Can you cut back on certain daily expenses, such as morning cups of coff ee from the coff ee shop or restaurant lunches? While you might have little leeway with regard to large expenses like car and housing payments, you can likely save substantial amounts of money by cutting back on small, daily expenses that can add up to substantial amounts of money over time. Track your behaviors with regard to “spending

money,” jotting down each purchase you make, no matter how small it seems. After a couple of weeks tracking your daily spending, a picture of your fi nancial behaviors should develop and you can then see if there are any areas where you can save money.

determining a need versus a wantOnce you see how you behave fi nancially, you can then make a list of those daily and monthly ex-penses that qualify as a need and those that fall into the “want” category. For example, morning coff ee might be a need, but why not brew that coff ee at home and take it with you rather than buying a costly cup at the coff ee shop near your offi ce each day? You can keep some of the items that fall onto your want list as a daily or monthly reward, but try to eliminate those that are compromising your monthly fi nances. And remember to include contri-butions to a savings account in your list of needs.

build your budgetA fi rm grasp of income, bills and behaviors and the knowledge of what’s a need versus a want should put heads of household in position to develop their budgets. Stick to your budget for a month and then assess how you and your family adjusted. While the adjustment might prove diffi cult at fi rst, by the end of the fi rst month you might notice any fi nan-cial-related stress you had been feeling has begun to dissipate, and you might even make an eff ort to tighten the purse strings a little more as you look to save more money. ■

The pandemic is causing uncertainty and upheaval in our everyday life, tak-ing a toll on our routines,

relationships and physical and mental health.

Many of us have been turning to food for comfort, with sales of sta-ples like meat, fl our and eggs spik-ing in recent months.

It could be due to biological drive. New research, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutri-tion, found meat plays an important role in our mental health. The study found clear evidence that those who avoid eating meat tended to have higher rates or risk of depression and anxiety compared to those who include meat in their diet.

Celebratory foods like ribs, ba-con and steak can even help lift our spirits and mark special occasions – even if you’re just rejoicing that it’s summertime.

Moving an elderly loved one can be tough.

No one wants to upset that person and

everyone wants the move to go as smoothly as possible. This can seem like mission impossible.

The children and families of the Baby Boomer generation – people born between 1946 and 1960 – are already helping their loved ones move into downsized or elderly assistance ac-commodations and often are not emo-tionally prepared for the task at hand.

Senior loved ones can be very set in their ways and often are not well equipped to express their emotional frustrations in a constructive way as moving day draws closer.

It all can seem like a daunting task.Over the years, we have packed

and moved many seniors and the im-portant thing is to stay organized, be patient, calm and respectful through-out the entire moving process.

If you are moving a senior loved one into a retirement facility or a condo, you should fi rst contact the management to fi nd out what they are allowed to bring in, appropriate moving hours and if they have any tips specifi c to their facility to help smooth the moving process.

Remember the following:

organize, begin packing weeks in advance

If your loved one is moving from a large home to a one-bedroom con-do, there will be more furniture than needed. Get a fl oor plan of the new space and help your senior plan the space with their favourite furnish-ings, then help them decide what to do with the left overs. If the item is a family heirloom and cannot be ac-commodated in the new space, sug-gest giving it to a close family mem-ber like a favourite grandchild.

sort before you packSeniors tend to collect things they

don’t need or use. Be sensitive when suggesting to get rid of possessions. Ask if they use the item and if they would mind if you donated it to raise money for the Salvation Army, for example. Start packing early to avoid feeling overwhelmed as moving day draws closer.

pack, clean as you goWhen helping sort and pack your

senior’s belongings keep in mind that their eyesight and reduced mobility prevents them from doing regular chores and can result in poor house-keeping habits. Instead of comment-ing, off er to clean as you pack and try not to be judgmental.

you will need more time than you think

Allow enough time so your loved one doesn’t feel rushed. Sorting through years of stuff is diffi cult and sometimes emotionally painful. Al-low your loved one time to say good-bye. If they take longer to clean out the desk drawer because they found a stack of pictures, let them take the time to walk down memory lane. This is a very important part of the process. Be patient and listen to their life stories, there will come a time you will be glad you did.

wrap small items in coloured paper

This prevents items like knick-knacks from becoming lost or mistak-enly thrown out.

label boxes on top and sides

Make sure to mark the top and sides of boxes as they’re packed and write in large letters to make it easier

for your loved one to read. Make sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items as ‘fragile’.

pack all electronics in the original boxes

Otherwise, use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items.

use packing paperWhen wrapping fi ne china and

precious items, do not use newsprint because the ink can bleed.

seal with packing tapeThis makes it easier to stack and

protect your senior’s belongings.

use boxes designed for items you are packing

Invest in dish packs for dishes and wardrobe boxes for clothing. Ward-robe boxes make it easy for seniors to access their clothing on hangers.

check unwanted clothing before donating

It’s a good idea to sort unwanted clothing for donation prior to mov-ing. Before donating any gently worn unwanted clothing, check pockets for valuables. Seniors often hide small valuable items like jewelry or cash in the pockets of suit jackets or shoes and forget where they hid it.

make your loved one’snew space feel familiar

Take pictures and colour samples of the inside of their current home. Try to decorate the new space and place objects in a similar way, so that their new space will feel like the old one. Be as detailed as you can, from arranging the bedroom furniture to placing family pictures on the bu-reau. This will help make the new surroundings feel like home. n

Although at the moment we may not be able to head cross country to some of our beautiful

national parks, with local parks now reopened to the public there are plen-ty of great drives to experience with spectacular views.

Niagara Falls to Niaga-ra-on-the-Lake

This drive is a short-but-sweet trek along the Niagara Parkway. The road follows the Niagara River and fea-tures plenty of beautiful sites along the way. Start by seeing the powerful falls and end your journey in the lush wine region of Ontario.

Skinner Pond to Jude Point

P.E.I. may be a small island, but it boasts some of the most iconic coastal views in the country. Start your jour-ney in Skinner Pond, the home of “Stompin’ Tom” Connors and make your way to Judes Point Harbour. The harbour has the largest inshore fi shing fl eet on the island.

Yellowhead Highway to Minnedosa Valley

The prairies may have a reputa-tion for being rather fl at, but the drive along Highway 16 in Manitoba will change your mind. This road trip winds through peaks and val-

leys, passing through quaint towns ending the journey in Minnedosa. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights have been known to make an appearance.

Icefields Parkway The best part of this Calgary drive

is that you don’t have to head off the beaten trail to see gorgeous views. The parkway will take you from se-rene Lake Louise to breathtaking Jasper in over 200 kilometres of non-stop wildlife.
