BFAD Administrative Order No.16

The marking “consume before” or “use by” or “expiration” datesignifies the end of the estimate shelf-life of a product (under a statedstorage condition) beyond which certain quality attributes becomesignificantly impaired. After this date, the product should be regardedas not marketable.

A “best before”or “best used by” date shows the end of a period(under a stated storage condition) after which certain qualityattributes of the product may be expected to deteriorate. After thisdate, the product may still be satisfactory for human consumption andmay remain marketable, but its best quality is presumably no longerguaranteed by makers.

Dates are to be indicated on the label specifying the day, month andyear in numerical sequence. The usual format is as follows:

Day Month Year

Products with a shelf life of less than a month may indicate only theday and the month.
