Soldiers and Fort Carson com-munity members who use the Iron Horse Sports and Fitness Center (IHSFC) must make alternate workout plans during May, as the facility will

close for gym floor refinishing. “Finishing crews will sand off

and reapply a polyurethane coating to the basketball gymnasium floor begin-ning Monday,” said Rick Garcia, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation sports director. “This is an annual project that takes about

four weeks to complete.”While crews are refinishing the

basketball floor, contractors will also complete annual maintenance tasks in other parts of the complex, including window cleaning, fixture repair and swimming pool maintenance, which requires the pool to be drained.

“The fumes from the polyurethane are toxic, so it’s not safe for people to be in the building,” Garcia said. “Crews will sand off and refinish the floor roughly four times. And, even with doors open and fans going, the fumes are so strong

Survey helps leaders ID strengths, weaknessesU.S. Army Civilian Workforce Transformation

The window for the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) will open Tuesday. This survey is of crucial importance not only to the Army, but also to your command, installation and unit.

FEVS is an annual survey that measures employees’ perceptions of whether, and to what extent, conditions that characterize successful organizations are present in their agency. The survey results provide valuable insight for agency leaders into the strengths and challenges of the agency in ensuring it has an effective civilian workforce.

The survey is issued by the Offi ce of Personnel Management and contains multiple choice responses. The survey itself takes only 20 minutes to complete but provides Army leadership with a tremendous amount of insight into the culture and environment of its civilian workforce.

“I encourage every Army employee who receives notifi cation about FEVS to take the survey,” said Sue Engelhardt, acting deputy assistant secretary of the Army for civilian personnel. “FEVS provides a crucial insight for the Army to share what we are doing right and what we can improve on.”

The FEVS is not just used for senior Army leaders. Results are reported to leaders at all levels down to the unit level. This is great for leaders and employees because it allows decision makers across the Army to see how their specifi c organizations are doing, and they can infl uence change within their own organization. The survey respondents will remain completely anonymous.

“Engaging employees is the biggest part of this whole survey,” said Mario Rodriguez, information assurance security offi cer. “As an employee, I appreciate it. I like knowing that people want to know what I think about my

job and whether I am going to stay and whether I am happy.”The President’s Management Agenda set a goal for all

federal agencies to have 67 percent positive responses to the Employee Engagement Index. In 2016, the Army scored 64.3 percent. With everyone’s help and participation, this number will increase as we continue to focus on the impor-tance of creating a culture of engagement across our Army.

“Army employees do great and amazing things on a daily basis,” said Engelhardt. “Army leaders want to hear from you, so we can continue to make this organization and institution even stronger.”

The 759th Military Police Battalion recognized its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment here Monday, announcing that the unit had earned its second consecutive U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Army Award for Maintenance Excellence.

Maj. Gen. Ryan F. Gonsalves, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, presented HHD members with the award for the small category (10-100 authorized personnel).

“This is really from the big Army perspective and the FORSCOM commander paying attention to what units are doing,” Gonsalves said. “You’ve been awarded for (excelling) and doing what you’re supposed to, and doing it right and by the book.”

Gonsalves then presentedMP HHD Commander Capt.Mark DelaPaz and Staff Sgt. Arnold Coleman with the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence (AAME). Gonsalves also recognized Chief Warrant Offi cer 2 Josue Castro, Sgt. Cody Meyer, Spc. Felix Fajardo and Spc. Miriam Salazar for their contributions to the organization’s success.

“This is leaders doing the right thing and Soldiers

executing it very well,” Gonsalves said. “I’m very proud of this unit. You are our Soldiers. Once again, thanks for what you do every day. This goes to show how outstanding leadership can make things happen in an organization.”

According to U.S. Army Sustainment information, the AAME program was created to annually recog-nize Army activities and units that demonstrate excellence in maintenance operations. The program objectives are to assess the maintenance component of unit readiness and recognize outstanding unit maintenance accomplishments while improving

Event builds awareness about yearlong effortstory and photo by cott rater

The William “Bill” Reed Special Events Center parking lot resembled an outdoor assembly line April 21. As community members pulled into the parking lot, they were greeted by inquisitive staff members, who asked a few questions, then directed drivers to the most convenient location in the lot for drop off.

More than 100 Fort Carson community members turned in used motor oil, batteries, electronics, cleaners, old televisions and assortments of other products they could have carelessly thrown into a garbage can.

In recognition of Earth Day, the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) hosted the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event, partly to help community members dispose of their hazardous materials in a convenient manner.

Rob Cavanaugh, DPW pollution prevention coor-dinator, said community members were thankful for the event’s location. They could load up their vehicle with unused items from their kitchens and garages and then drop them off on post, rather than take a trip to the county hazardous collection point east of town.

“We had some spouses show up who just wanted to clean out their garage while their sponsors were deployed,” he said.

But, the event served a higher purpose as well, according to Eric Bailey, DPW solid waste/recycle program manager. It was designed to build aware-ness about disposing of materials responsibly on a consistent basis.

“This is a great event that highlights the fact that people have options for disposing of materials other than the landfi ll,” Bailey said. “But, this is a one-day event. People need to know that Fort Carson has a household hazardous waste disposal site open every day next to the post’s exchange.”

Still, Fort Carson’s recycling efforts have come a long way in a decade. Bailey said when he fi rst started working for DPW in 2005, the post had only 38 recycling dumpsters and 18 roll-off containers. Now, the post holds roughly 400 recycle dumpsters and 150 roll offs.

“Back in 2005, we were recycling about 20 percent of the trash on post, and now we’re up to about 50 percent,” Bailey said. “That’s all attributable to

providing (recycle) containers for people at different locations. I mean, people are going to use what they can fi nd. If the only dumpster outside your building is for trash, that’s what’s going to be used.”

He estimated that 10 years ago, most recycle dumpsters on post were located in motor pools, used only by the folks who worked there.

Capturing items such as cardboard, metals and wooden pallets has helped improve the recycle percentage as well, but building awareness about the ease of recycling has provided the biggest boost.

“We have a lot of good NCOs who are in tune with recycling, but turnover often puts units back to square one,” Bailey said. “You get a unit that is doing well and then its leaders turnover and recycling kind of gets lost

in the shuffl e. My advantage though is that the units know they need us. If your trash guy skips you for a couple of weeks, things start to come unglued.”

Though the post has made huge strides in raising its recycle rate, Bailey said there is plenty of room for improvement.

“We have to convince people that recycling is not hard and not complicated,” he said. “When people buy something at a store, 99 percent of the time it comes in a package that is recyclable. Mattresses, electronics, porcelain, furniture and clothing, whatever it is — it might not be recyclable, but with these hazardous waste drop off points and recycle locations, at least we know it’s going to the right place — let us decide that for you.”

effi ciency and fi eld maintenance readiness. Each year, a unit may compete in the small, medium (101-300 authorized personnel), or large (301 or more authorized personnel) categories. Each Army command may nominate only six units to compete for the award. This typi-cally creates subcompetitions at lower levels, allowing units to compete within divisions, brigades and battalions.

During the fi rst stage of the com petition, a unit must prepare documentation that summarizes the maintenance activities of the unit. Developing the AAME book is essentially an opportunity for the unit to highlight all of its accomplish-ments and praiseworthy activities over the last fi scal year. When the book is complete, it is submitted as a nomination packet and considered

for competition at the battalion level. Units can then qualify to be considered for competition at higher levels all the way up to the Department of the Army level.

Beginning at the FORSCOM level, inspectors travel to the unit to perform onsite inspections.

Some of the areas covered during the inspection include weapons main-tenance, services, hazardous-materials handling, motor pool operations, master driver programs, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) room operations.

On the surface, inspectors evalu-ate a unit’s vehicles and equipment to ensure they are in operation and good working order. But, they also want to see the unit’s administration systems as a means for checking consistency.

With its FORSCOM-level victory, the HHD advanced to compete at the Department of the Army level. Battalion leaders should hear word of the outcome of that competition later this year.

that they can induce headaches. Once work is complete, we’ll call in air-quality inspectors to test the area to make sure it’s safe for people to return to the gym.”

Garcia said that DFMWR staff has taken steps to mitigate disruptions for users during the closure, including moving aerobics classes and training sessions to other on-post fi tness facilities.

“We’ve expanded hours at the other gyms to accom-modate training, aerobics and physical training classes,” Garcia said. “And, we’ve posted the new times on the individual fi tness center Facebook pages, so people can fi nd the new hours there.”

For instance, McKibben Physical Fitness Center, which normally closes at 8 p.m. weekdays will be open until 10 p.m. during the IHSFC closure, while Waller Physical Fitness Center will see expanded hours on weekends and will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

DFMWR staff also plans to open the post’s outdoor pool during the shutdown.

“The outdoor pool (near Ellis Street and Specker Avenue) will be open by Monday,” Garcia said. “It’s already fi lled up, and that’s one of the steps we’ve taken to help meet customer needs during the Iron Horse closure.”

Ninety-five Fort Carson Soldiers from the 127th Military Police Company and 148th MP Detachment were welcomed home in an evening ceremony Monday.

The 759th MP Battalion Soldiers deployed in August to Kuwait and Qatar in support of Operation Spartan Shield, a combined forces contingency operation designed to deter and react to possible threats within the region. They provided law enforcement operations at their respective installations for U.S. Army

Central Command (ARCENT). “I’m super proud. It is a hard thing

to do, to go police a community with its own family and mission set,” said Capt. David Prewitt, commander, 148th MP. “Everyone was awesome and fantastic, and they were the utmost pro-fessionals. The ‘Lone Sentinels’ were well represented.”

While deployed, the units were respon-sible for the installation security at camps Buerhing, Arifijan and As Sayliyah. They were also responsible for the port and convoy security as well as protective services for ARCENT. The Soldiers

seized more than 700 items of contraband, escorted $5 million weapons and ammuni-tion throughout the theater and provided partnership exchanges with various foreign military agencies while providing their expertise to more than 20,000 Soldiers, Army civilians and contractors.

“The best part of the deployment was the people,” said Spc. McKenzi Miller, 127th MP, of her first deployment. “It was interesting to go from America to a completely different country and see the culture and how life is run over there.”

Sixteen-month old Sapphira was not sure what to think of her daddy,

Spc. Joshua Windham, 127th MP, who explained that his daughter was only 6 months old when he deployed and had only seen him for the past 10 months through a camera.

“The return is great for the Soldiers, their Families and Fort Carson,” said Lt. Col. Robert McNellis, commander, 759th MP Bn. “(The welcome home ceremony) marks the end of a tremendously success-ful mission in Kuwait and Qatar. They were purpose-driven and professional Soldiers. They are America’s best, and I’m deeply honored to have them home after nine months.”

WIESBADEN, Germany — “What you are doing here is important, not only to our allies but to the American people … so thanks for what you do,” Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey told the troops he visited in Latvia and Germany from April 18-21.

Dailey visited U.S. Soldiers in Europe to stress the importance of the Operation Atlantic Resolve mission and the contribu-tions Soldiers on the ground have made in enhancing global security.

“This is not Iraq or Afghanistan,” said Dailey. “But this is just as important, if not more important at this time in our history right now … making sure we are doing the things we need to do to maintain the partner-ships we have with our international partners and keeping the interest of the American people.”

Soldiers of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, deployed to Europe earlier this year as part of the Army’s rotational force and in a short amount of time are making good on the United States’ commitment to the U.S.-European strategic partnership.

“These Soldiers, in this short period of time, have far exceeded my expectations,” Dailey said. “I have the faith and confi dence they will continue to do what they were sent here to do, and I wanted to personally come here to Europe and tell each and every one of them how proud America is of them.”

These rotational forces will conduct exercises across the theater during the course of their nine-month rotation, routinely demonstrating

speed of assembly and massing for training events.

The visit gave Soldiers the oppor-tunity to ask the sergeant major of the Army questions and seek out his guidance to assist with the mission.

Command Sgt. Maj. Sheryl Lyon, U.S. Army Europe’s senior enlisted adviser said having Dailey visit positively impacted the Soldiers.

“Having someone at his level here reinforces for the Soldiers the importance of their mission here,” Lyon said. “Without this, Soldiers lose focus and they feel like they are not contributing … so having somebody from his level tell them that they have purpose helps them to get through their time here.”

Dailey agreed with Lyons.“When Soldiers are highly motivated and

they’re led through motivation, direction and purpose, I have every confi dence in the world they will perform to the best of their ability,” he said.

Soldiers from Company C, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, conducted team- and squad-level live-fi re exercises in the southern training areas of Fort Carson April 10-13 and April 17-21, respectively.

The training is designed as a challenging, yet manageable, exercise for fi re teams, the smallest unit in an infantry platoon, and prepares Soldiers for progression into collective, platoon-level training.

Sgt. 1st Class Kristopher Bettinger, platoon sergeant, Company C, 2nd Bn., 12th Inf. Reg., 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, said he was pleased with the training.

“Our team live-fi re exercise was an excellent training opportunity for our company,” said Bettinger. “Not only were we able to give our young team leaders experience maneuvering their teams while fi ring live ammunition, but we were also able to train the individual Soldiers on the basics of fi re, maneuver and communication.”

Training was designed to replicate realistic combat scenarios, such as engaging enemy direct fi re, establishing a base of fi re, closing on an objective and breaking contact, and using smoke screens to conceal movement

“Along with providing a realistic training scenario, the exercise also prepared the fi re teams for their upcoming squad and platoon live-fi re event, in which they will again react to enemy contact, except this time as an entire squad rather than a single team,” Sheffi eld said.

The stole was transferred from Lt. Col. Robert Glazener, outgoing 4th Inf. Div. chaplain, to the incoming division chaplain. Brown comes to Fort Carson from the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y., where he served as the deputy garrison chaplain. The ceremony in the Army dates back to the Army Chaplain Corps when Gen. George Washington commissioned Continental Army “clergy” to serve as chaplains for the Soldiers. The ceremony is based on when the prophet Elijah anointed Elisha to serve as the next prophet as he placed his mantle upon Elisha symbolizing the “transfer of ministry responsibility.”

i Veterans in Piping — United Association (UA) Veterans

in Piping (VIP) program is an intense, accelerated training program in the field of pipe welding. This program is designed for active-duty service members transitioning from the military with a separation/retirement date of plus or minus one month of the

class end date. Upon successful completion of the full-time, 18-week training program training, each graduate is placed in a five-year UA appren-ticeship program with guaranteed job placement. Graduates can be placed in over 300 locations across the United States. The next class is scheduled for May 1 to Aug. 31. Information sessions are held on the first Friday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Education Center, building 1117, room 203B. Free commercial driver’s license training —Teamsters Military Assistance Program/ABF Freight Commercial Driver’s License training program establishes a direct pathway for transitioning Soldiers to secure high-quality, skills-based training in commercial driving and enter immediate employment with ABF Freight upon transition. This six-week intensive career skills training program is a combination of in-classroom learning and practical driving and maneuvers. The program is free to eligible transi-tioning Soldiers within 180 days of transitioning from active service. Interested Soldiers are encouraged to attend an information session which is held every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the education center, building 1117, room 309.

The 4th Infantry Division motorcycle mentor and safety offi ce teamed up to create a two-day motorcycle check station April 19-20.

The station drew about 100 riders and provided motorcycle inspections, a refresher obstacle course for new riders and the opportunity to seek advice and ask questions of seasoned motorcycle riders.

Inspections are conducted regularly for Soldiers — both for motorcycles and privately owned vehicles at the unit level, but this inspection was open to motorcycle riders across the installation in preparation for the 2nd Annual Iron Horse Kickstart Motorcycle Safety Rally May 15.

The station inspectors checked each rider for motorcycle training compliance and each motorcycle was inspected using T-CLOCS: tires, wheels and brakes; controls; lights and electrics; oil and fl uids; chassis; and stands.

Any Soldier wishing to purchase and ride a motorcycle is required to take the Basic Riders Course 1 and after a year take the Basic Riders Course 2 or the Military Sportbike Riders Course. The classes are available on Fort Carson free of charge for Soldiers, said Chief Warrant Offi cer 2 Shane Chisholm, Division Artillery, 4th Inf. Flu shots available — Patients enrolled with designated primary care clinics are encouraged to request their flu shots with any scheduled appoint-ment. Clinics may have specified times for walk-in flu vaccinations, so beneficiaries are encouraged to call their clinic directly or 524-CARE (2273) and ask for the clinic’s available flu vaccination walk-in times. Children with a pediatric clinic appointment and any accompanying siblings are encouraged to get their flu vaccinations during the visit. Pediatrics will provide walk-in flu vaccinations on a space-available basis weekdays from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. Flu Mist will not be offered this year.

Missed hospital appointments — When someone is a no-show for a medical appointment, it means that two people missed out on that appointment. A habitual no-show can take up to five slots with rebooking their appointments, denying several

Of noteTitus road closure — The Directorate of

Emergency Services will be conducting repairs to the Gate 5 Active Vehicle Barrier May 6-7. Titus Road between Bayonet Circle and the entrance to the Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club will be closed from 8 a.m. May 6 through 8 a.m. May 7 to all through traffic. Access to Navajo Village will be via Gate 5. Evans Army Community Hospital and the Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club can be accessed via Gate 1.

TRICARE dental program — Beginning Monday, United Concordia Companies, Inc., will manage the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP). Beneficiaries don’t need to take any actions to continue coverage. The TDP is a voluntary dental benefit for eligible active-duty Family members and National Guard and Reserve members and their Families. Improvements include:

� The annual maximum TDP will pay will increase from $1,300 to $1,500

� TDP will consider sealants a free and preventive treatment, and no longer include a 20-percent cost share

� The auto-enrollment age for Family members will lower from age 4 to 1

� For most beneficiaries, the monthly premium rate will decrease

Free skin cancer screening — The Evans Army Community Hospital Dermatology Clinic is providing free skin cancer screenings from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday in observance of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The screening includes a visual skin inspection by a board-certified dermatologist with recommendations for appropriate follow-up care, if necessary. Active-duty Soldiers, Family members, retirees, and Fort Carson civilian and contract personnel are eligible for screening. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of his lifetime. Early detection and proper treatment are essential to providing the highest cure rates possible. Walk-in appointments will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, or an appointment can be made by calling 526-7185. The clinic is located in room 1300.

Teddy bear clinic — The Fort Carson Veterinary Center invites community members to bring injured stuffed animals to the center May 30-31 for a short hospital stay during which the veterinary staff will suture and repair lacerations and tears. Stuffed animals will be ready for pick up June 2 and June 5. Located in building 6190, across the street from the Exchange on Sheridan Avenue, the center is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, engaged 20 congres-sional staff delegates with physical fitness training and candid conversation at the brigade footprint April 20.

Members of 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, one of seven battalion-sized units in the brigade, put the staff members through a rigorous workout, but kept it reasonable for those not used to the thin mountain air or intense workouts.

“We did a lot of the functional fitness training that we do because we’re an infantry brigade combat team; physical readiness is paramount to our success and is essential for mission accomplishment for the missions we’re assigned to conduct,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Seagreaves, commander, 3rd Sqdn., 61st Cav. Reg. “It was a good training session, and we were able to scale it in a way that the staff delegates could participate to their level of ability.”

“They really got to see what Soldiers of an infantry brigade combat team do day in and day out to keep their bodies physically ready for the rigors of modern combat,” he said.

The majority of the delegates kept up, at their ability level, with the fast-paced training.

“It was intense, fun, and everyone was very nice and supportive, but it was intense because we did a tiny fraction of what they do every day and it’s extremely impressive; the magnitude of facilities like this is incredible,” said Amanda Hall, legislative assistant

for Sen. Jim Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma.The Soldiers assisted, motivated and kept the

delegates involved during the workout.“It’s more interesting to see what their lifestyle is

and where they come from, how they work and they got to see how we work and see our lifestyle. They did PT with us today and did well for their first time,” said Staff Sgt. Nicolas Montijo, cavalry scout section sergeant, Troop A, 3rd Sqdn., 61st Cav. Reg.

Eating breakfast and lunch at the Warfighter Dining Facility allowed delegates to have one-on-one and small group intimate conversations to establish and build a strong bond with some of the Soldiers.

“It was great overhearing different conversations, about the training and real situations and just how intense it really is; the stuff that we never hear about on Capitol Hill,” said Hall.

One delegate said she took full advantage of the situation, speaking with several Soldiers throughout the meals.

“I really enjoyed my experience thus far, seeing the hands-on training that you do and can appreciate from seeing it from the inside. The intimate conver-sation while eating is a great opportunity for us to ask the right questions and get to know you all, hear what you do day to day; that has been very enjoyable

for me,” said Ashley Morgan, staff assistant for former presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, a Republican from Arizona.

They received a training event overview from 4th Inf. Div. and U.S. Army Garrison Fort Carson command.

The next day the delegation traveled to Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site to witness Fort Carson Soldiers conducting large-scale training. “A lot of this is going to be a new experience for me, too. I’ve never handled weaponry or been around military machinery like this. Getting a chance to get my hands on a machine gun or flying in a helicopter (will) definitely help me understand what you’ll go through in training and out there on the battlefield,” Morgan said.

After the lunch, delegates were taken to visit pilots and Soldiers of the aviation brigade to further enhance the opportunity for bonding with troops.

“The big takeaway from this visit is the human connection that the staff delegates can build with the Soldiers, and they take that back to their congressmen,” said Seagreaves.

Delegates also visited the Advanced Gunnery Training System/Bradley Advanced Training System and an aircraft flight simulator run by the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. They also toured the Warrior Transition Battalion, Evans Army Community Hospital, a Soldier barracks, Fort Carson Education Center and the commissary.

In 1994, he worked for $5.50 an hour at a grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa. His dream was dead, he had just been cut from the Green Bay Packers as their fourth-string quarterback. But he didn’t quit, he didn’t give up. He had hope and he did the next right thing in front of him.

With a love for playing the game, Kurt Warner fought hard to get back into football and joined

the Arena Football League playing from 1995-1997.

Persevering and proving to be a

winner, he carried his local team in

Iowa to consecutive championships, some-thing that had never been

done before in Iowa.In 1998, he

signed with the Los

Angeles Rams — a lackluster team with nine consecutive losing seasons. One year later, Warner led the league in passing yards and touchdown passes; his team improved to a 13-3 record; and together they delivered a Super Bowl XXXIV win. Warner captured both the NFL and Super Bowl MVP awards that year.

But in the impending years Warner would be tested again through job loss, injuries and defeats. In 2004, the Rams fi red him. Picked up by the New York Giants, he was released the same year in favor of Eli Manning. Broken fi ngers, groin injuries, a torn medial collateral ligament and a broken hand were all factors in his poor performance.

Early in 2005, the below-par Arizona Cardinals signed him on a one-year deal. Over the next three years he was benched and injured repeatedly. But in 2009 he led the team to Super Bowl XLIII where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers despite his throwing for 377 yards, the second highest in Super Bowl history. Warner’s professional career was marked by a drive never to give up — in a word, perseverance.

Setbacks are a fact of life. But be encouraged today by the words of Saint Paul, “… we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance; and endurance produces character, and

character produces hope. And hope does not put us to shame …” Romans 5:3-5.

Fire and Emergency ServicesSpring cleaning — Regardless

of what the weather has been doing, spring is here. Traditionally, people mend their winter cabin fever with the much needed “spring cleaning.” To help keep the home and Family safe, keep these tips in mind while going through the spring cleaning frenzy:

Clear accumulated leaves and pine needles from around the house, sheds, garages and gutters

Clean out utility closets, especially around the water heater and furnace. Keep combustibles clear and wipe out the dust. Pay particular attention to the area around fl ue vents. Check clothes dryers and clean the vents and hoses of built-up lint.

Inspect the barbecue grill to ensure it’s in good working order and check propane tank connections.

Check that windows open and close easily in case they are needed as an escape route.

In the garage, clean up any oily rags, accumulated combustible liquids, papers/magazines or recyclables. Store paint, gas cans and oil in a responsible manner.

Review the Family fi re escape plan and meeting place.

Security access controlInstallation access — Unescorted

access onto Fort Carson is restricted to personnel in possession of an authorized DOD identifi cation (ID) card or an installation pass/badge. Guests,

visitors, vendors and contractors who request unescorted instal-lation access must undergo a National Crime Information Center – Interstate Identifi cation Index (NCIC-III) criminal history background check prior to being granted access. Personnel requesting recurring unescorted access must process through the Gate 1 Visitor Control Center and have a Fort Carson Form 2036 which has been digitally signed by their sponsor. Vetting for one-time installation access can be performed at Gate 3. DOD ID card holders may escort non-DOD ID card holders onto the installation. Police/Provost Marshal DivisionRecreational vehicles — The

Conservation Law Enforcement Program staff has noticed an increase in the number of violations for recreating downrange without a permit.

A majority of the citations were written for off-roading or four-wheeling in the training areas. Fort Carson Regulation 200-6, Wildlife Recreation and Management, prohibits recreationists from driving off designated recreational roads while downrange. For dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles, Outdoor Recreation manages over 100 acres of trails to ride just inside Gate 20. There are numerous online sources available to locate the many four-wheel drive trails off post, all within an easy driving distance. In recreational areas on Fort Carson a permit is required to hunt, fi sh, hike or watch wildlife and a down range pass is required to enter any training area managed by Range Control. Extended hours clinic — Evans Army Community Hospital has opened its new Premier Extended Hours Clinic at the Colorado Springs-based Premier Medical Home. The clinic is open Monday-Friday from 4-9 p.m., except federal holidays. Patients must have scheduled

appointments at this time. The Extended Hours Clinic will provide medical services to active-duty military personnel, their Family members and TRICARE Prime beneficiaries. TRICARE Standard patients are not eligible. The clinic also provides basic laboratory and pharmacy services, however, it does not provide emergency services, pharmacy refills, specialty care or radiology services. Patients must be at least 18 years or older; pediatric services are expected in the future. Upon arrival, patients must present a valid military identification card. The clinic is located at 3920 N. Union Blvd., Suite 100, in the Premier Medical Plaza at the intersection of Union Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway near the University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus. Veterinary clinic hours — The Fort Carson Veterinary Center, 1535 Sheridan Ave., building 6190, is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and closed on federal holidays. The Broadmoor World Arena will host one of the most popular monster truck tours in the country Friday-Sunday.

Monster Jam is celebrating 25 years of adrenaline-packed family fun by bringing some of the most popular names in world-class monster truck performances to Colorado Springs to include Grave Digger, Max-D, El Toro Loco and Monster Mutt.

Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center was named one of the 25 best museums/ galleries in the nation by American Art Awards. The center at 30 W. Dale St. has a museum, art school and theater company, as well as a café and museum shop. It started with the establishment of the Broadmoor Art Academy, housed in the former home of Julie and Spencer Penrose. The Fine Arts Center opened in 1936 in a building designed by John Gaw Meem. The Fort Carson varsity basketball team was notified Monday that it had received an at-large bid for the military national tournament held in San Antonio in May.

The post team was awarded the invita-tion after finishing fourth in the 16-team field at the Central United States Military Basketball League Championships in Wichita, Kansas, April 21 through Monday.

Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas J. Parsley, Division Artillery, 4th Infantry Division, presented each player with a division coin Monday on behalf of 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson Commanding General Maj. Gen. Ryan F. Gonsalves and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael A. Crosby in recognition of their accomplishment.

Parsley thanked the team members for their hard work all season and bringing the post the honor of being represented in the national tournament. He said he and the command team talked about how well the team has represented themselves and Fort Carson, both at home and on the road. Parsley said it is indicative of the spirit of the post community, noting people know from the time they arrive here that this is a special place.

“It’s like I tell the (Soldiers) at the newcomers briefing … being assigned to the 4th Infantry Division is like being with the New England Patriots in football, we play at a higher level and they must get to a higher level,” Parsley said.

The post team arrived in Kansas with high hopes but lost its first game by two points to Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma.

Fort Carson coach Angel Acevedo said it was a great game between two rivals that have split their meetings over the past five years. The post team was faced with the daunting task of having to win three straight games to make it to the final four.

The team played against Barksdale Air Force Base which had two 6-foot-9-inch players and a former NBA player. The post team pulled away late to win that game.

Next up was Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This time the post team enjoyed a height advantage and was able to earn the victory. The final hurdle to make the final four was the unenviable task of

needing to beat the Fort Bliss, Texas, team that won all six matchups this season again the post team.

Like the NCAA tournament, where it doesn’t matter what happened during the regular season, the Fort Carson players put those six losses behind them and upset Fort Bliss by 20 points to move into the final four. The post team then had to play Fort Riley, Kansas, the No. 1 seed, which defeated the post team to end its tournament run.

Fort Carson has partnered with Spartan Race to host the Colorado-Fort Carson Super and Sprint Weekend Spartan Races May 13-14. Over the two days there will be three races testing athletes’ abilities to mentally and physically compete. The Super Sprint race will have more than 25 Spartan Obstacles over 8-plus miles of rugged terrain. That race will be held May 13. The Sprint Race, the shortest of the Spartan races, delivers more than 20 obstacles over 3-plus miles and will be held May 14. Races for those under the age of 14 will also be held where children can choose to race a 1- or 2-mile obstacle course. Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club will host its annual free Clubs for Kids event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. There will be birdie ball and inflatable targets as well as representatives from the Starting New at Golf organization.

CYS officials are looking for people interested in volunteering as youth sports and fitness coaches. Anyone interested in being a coach must pass a background check, attend a manda-tory three-hour preseason training session and be available two to three hours per week for practices and games. CYS officials said anyone interested in being a coach must have good communication

skills with the CYS sports staff and parents of the players. According to CYS officials, youth coaches receive discounts on sports enrollment for their children, promotion points for active-duty Soldiers, volunteer hours, resume building and will make a definitive positive impact on the community.
