The National Day of Prayer and Re-membrance for Mariners and Peo-ple of the Sea is May 22. The day is observed in con-junction with National Maritime Day in the United States of America, which has been celebrated since 1933 to honor those who serve as merchant mari-ners and to recognize the benefits of the maritime in-dustry. The USCCB established the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea on November 14, 2005 to encourage Catholics in the country to support, remember and pray for merchant mariners/seafarers, fishermen, port personnel and those in the maritime industry. “In a special way this year, let us remember those who lost their lives at sea, those who perished in the earth-quake and tsunami in Japan and the families left be-hind,” Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah, Georgia, said.

TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- To meet their growing needs, the com-munity chooses seven reputable men to serve the new Greek believers (Acts 6:1-7). Psalm -- Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading -- We, like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:4-9). Gospel -- "Show us the Father," Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: "Whoever sees me, sees the Fa-ther" (John 14:1-12).

VOCATION Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of "vocation" and the manner in which each of us dis-cerns our vocation for life. In today's apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the "cornerstone" of our voca-tion, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vocation as "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of [God's] own, so that you may announce the praises" of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:9). All of us, no matter what path our life's vo-cation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anointed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through baptism. All of this, so that we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace--wherever life takes us--in service, in word, and in sac-rament. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Adult: In what ways does your personal relationship with Je-sus thrust you into the role of service? Child: How would you describe Jesus?

Unfortunately, the damage from the recent tornados that devastated many states from Arkansas to Virginia occurred in many mission dioceses that do not enjoy the blessing of substantial financial resources. Funds from this collection will be used to support the efforts of the United States Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities USA, the national office for local Catholic Charities agencies and affiliates nationwide, as they respond to immediate and long term need to rebuild after the widespread destruction, and to the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church in the areas affected by the tornados. RELEASING THE HOLY One day God noticed a racket going on around a man in Italy. He was hammering and chisel-ing stone as if something were alive inside and he was laboring to free it. "Michelangelo, what are you doing?" said God. "I am setting you free, Lord, so every-one will recognize you in this stone, as well as in everyone who suffers a violent, unjust death. I don't want people to forget what you did for us." The Lord replied to Michelangelo: "In times past I stayed in many different places. I don't remember living in that stone you're working on." "Lord," said the sculptor, "when your Son came to us, he left your Holy Spirit everywhere; we have to search it out, discover it, and reveal it to oth-ers." The Lord was pleased with Michelangelo's answer and left him to chip away. Slowly, very slowly, the sculp-tor set free the figure of a woman holding the body of her dead son in her lap.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP "Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2502). DEJA SALIR LO SAGRADO Un día Dios notó el ruido que hacía un hombre en Italia. Martillaba y cincelaba una piedra como si algo vivo es-tuviera adentro y se empeñaba en dejarlo salir. "Miguel Ángel, ¿qué estás haciendo?" le preguntó Dios. "Te estoy dejando salir, Señor, para que todo el mundo te reco-nozca en esta piedra así como en los que sufren muertes violentas e injustas. No quiero que la gente se olvide de lo que hiciste por nosotros". El Señor le respondió a Mi-guel Ángel: "Tiempos atrás me quedé en muchos y dife-rentes lugares, pero no recuerdo vivir en esa piedra que cincelas". El escultor contestó: "Señor, cuando tu Hijo vino al mundo nos dejó tu Espíritu Santo en todos los lugares; nosotros tenemos que buscarlo, descubrirlo y revelárselo a los demás". El Señor se quedó contento con lo que le dijo Miguel Ángel y lo dejó para que siguiera trabajando. Lentamente, muy lentamente, el escultor dejó salir la figura de una mujer con el cuerpo inerte de su Hijo en su regazo.

Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will ad-vise the Holy Father in the selec-tion of the next Bishop of the Dio-cese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

New Roman Missal Notes on the New Translation of the Missale Ro-manum, editio typica tertia While there are many and complex elements of the translation yet to be decided by the Bishops, the translation of several phrases in the Order of Mass have been previously decided by the instruction Litur-giam authenticam. Among these are “certain expres-sions that belong to the heritage of the whole or of a great part of the ancient Church, as well as others that have become part of the general human patri-mony…” Therefore, the response Et cum spiritu tuo is “to be respected by a translation that is as literal as possible."1 Commentaries for a popular understanding of these two elements of the Liturgy are provided here and may be reproduced freely with the customary copyright acknowledgement by our readers.

AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT Perhaps the most common dialogue in the Liturgy of the Roman Rite consists of the greeting :

Dominus vobiscum et cum spiritu tuo

Since 1970, this has been translated as: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

As a part of the revised translation of the Roman Mis-sal, now taking place, the translation of this dialogue has been revised, to read:

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Since it is clear that the change to “and with your spirit” is a significant and wide ranging change in a longstanding liturgical practice, the following ques-tions are provided to clarify the reasons for the change and the meaning of the dialogue itself.

1. Why has the response et cum spiritu tuo been trans-lated as “and with your spirit”? The retranslation was necessary because it is a more correct rendering of “et cum spiritu tuo”. Recent scholarship has recog-nized the need for a more precise translation capable of expressing the full meaning of the Latin text.

2. What about the other major languages? Do they have to change their translations? No. English is the only major language of the Roman Rite which did not translate the word spiritu. The Italian (E con il tuo spirito), French (Et avec votre esprit), Spanish (Y con tu espíritu) and German (Und mit deinem Geiste) render-ings of 1970 all translated the Latin word spiritu pre-cisely.

3. Has the Holy See ever addressed this question? In 2001, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments published an instruction entitled, Liturgiam authenticam, subtitled, On the Use of Vernacular Languages in the Publication of the Books of the Roman Liturgy. The instruction directs spe-cifically that: “Certain expressions that belong to the heritage of the whole or of a great part of the ancient Church, as well as others that have become part of the general human patrimony, are to be respected by a translation that is as literal as possible, as for ex-ample the words of the people’s response Et cum spiritu tuo, or the expression mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa in the Act of Penance of the Or-der of Mass.”2
