SUNCOAST CAMPAIGN FOR GRADE-LEVEL READING

The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (SCGLR) is a community wide effort in Manatee and Sarasota counties to help children, especially those from low-income families, succeed in school by ensuring they read on grade level by the end of third rade.

ATTENDANCE AWARENESS

The national statistics are troubling: 67% of children nationwide and more than 80% of those from low-income families are not proficient readers by the end of third grade. As early as preschool and kindergarten, chronic absence - missing 10% of the academic year - leaves third graders unable to read proficiently, sixth graders struggling with coursework and high school students off track for graduation. In some communities, chronic absence affects more than one out of four children.

Chronic absence can be significantly reduced when schools, families and community partners work together to monitor data, nurture a habit of regular attendance and address hurdles that keep children from attending school every day.

POSTER CONTEST

The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (SCGLR) sponsored the Attendance Awareness Poster Contest during National Attendance Awareness Month - September 2016. Every student in the School District of Manatee County and Sarasota County Schools was invited to participate. There were two tiers of the competition:

- School-level winners: one winner for each grade-level in each participating school - Regional winners: one winner for each grade-level for each county

Overview: - 86 schools in Nanatee and Sarasota Counties participated

Approximately 44, 000 students created posters Each participating school selected a winner for each grade-level

o 453 school-level winners were selected from the two counties • 235 from Manatee County • 218 from Sarasota County

o 22 Pre-Kindergarten winners received funds for a Classroom Pizza Party

o Winning K-12th grade students will receive 4 tickets to a Spring Training Baseball Game in March 2017

22 total Regional Winners will be awarded an iPad o 9from Manatee County o 13 from Sarasota County
