Digital subscriber line (DSL, originally digital subscriber loop) is a family of technologies that provide
Internet access by transmitting digital data over the wires of a local telephone network.

Currently xDSL technologies:
ADSL2+( including ADSL) is the most mainstream broad band
access DSL technology due to large scale used and well
compatible.
VDSL2 is the newest and most advanced standard of digital
subscriber line (DSL) broadband wire line communications.
vectoring improves the performance that downstream/upstream
rate can theoretically reaches 100 Mbps.
G.SHDSL has less latency, mainly used for E1/T1/V35 distance
extension and enterprise leased line.

VDSL2 is mature and scale used in commercial environment, the subscriber can be provided 50M@300m bandwidth. Vectoring will mature on 2013, and actually provides downstream rate at100M@300m, 80M@500m bandwidth. G.Fast is expected to be used in commercial environment after 2012, and it can provide 1G@100m bandwidth each subscriber

Vectoring Commercially Used in Eircom Challenges
Benefits
Solutions:
Eircom is facing competitive pressure from cable operators UPC, so the Irish telecommunications require rapid
deployment of high-bandwidth access network.
The success of BT next generation access network using the FTTC copper speed gives Eircom confidence about the
FTTC deployment, so they take the solution similar to BT for rapid deployment.
Eircom plans to invest €x00 million in NGAN project.
The MA5616 can be deployed in the H100A
H200B outdoor cabinet at a fast speed.
MA5616 VDSL2/vectoring improve the
broadband service competitiveness.
Eircom uses vectoring (SLV, NLV) for continued
copper bandwidth acceleration.
In 2013, Eircom successfully adopted the vectoring technology in a large scale, providing 100 Mbit/s access rate
using copper lines for over 700,000 home and enterprise users.
Until late March in 2014, 3000 outdoor cabinets have been deployed in vectoring sites.
Eircom expects to provide the ultra-broadband access rate to 1.4 million home and enterprise users in 2016.
After the next generation access network (NGAN) is deployed, Eircom surpasses most European fixed carriers in
bandwidth access rate and attempts to develop G.fast.
H100A+1 x MA5616 (192 VDSL)
H200B+2 x MA5616 (384 VDSL) NLV(384 vectoring)
SLV (192 vectoring)
28
BT Deploying FTTx for Full Services
Benefits
Solutions:
Economic drive: Digital Britain Government Plan,
Video for 2012 London Olympics
Competitive drive: MSOs & CLECs such as Virgin Media,
launched fixed BB to 50 Mbit/s to attract more users
New services drive: VOD programs, BBC iPlayer/BT Vision/Pay TV
The aggregated OLT solution reduces the number of COs and achieves network convergence (access and
aggregation), service convergence (ultra-broadband, HDTV, and voices), and user convergence (home,
enterprise, mobile bearer, and wholesale), which effectively achieves network flatness.
Comprehensive customized green cabinet, one-stop delivery, and fast deployment
MA5616s deployed in a large scale provides the VDSL2 and vectoring technologies for copper lines to achieve
100 Mbit/s transmission rate.
BT deploys 80% FTTC networking and 20% FTTH networking, greatly reducing CAPEX. (The BT networking
deployment shows that the cost for deploying FTTH is five times of the cost for deploying FTTC.)
The total of 5500 COs reduces to 800, greatly reducing renting fees of the equipment room.
Provides new user service packages of 40 Mbit/s, 80 Mbit/s, and 100 Mbit/s, which attracts more copper
line users. The marketing share increases to 31% from 27%.
Challenges
29
Transforming to the All-IP Network
Benefits
Solutions:
The fixed voice revenue declines by 10.9% every year; the voice ARPU declines to 20.2 Euro with the
decline of 4.7% every year; 133,000 voice users are lost every year.
Demand for new and innovative services is increasing
Strong competitive pressure from cable operators
Invest in network simplification to reduce OPEX and increase operating efficiency
SingleFAN solution: Unified platform for all services, include POTS, VDSL2, and FTTH
FFTC network construction, unified solution for outdoor cabinets, shortened copper line distance,
rapid service development, some existing outdoor cabinets are reused for the deployment of
MA5616s to achieve fast deployment.
MA5616 VDSL2 improves broadband service;
The PSTN is successfully reconstructed and traditional services are kept for 2 million users.
About 11% COs are shut down, which increases 3 million Euro revenues for Belgium Telecom.
The power saving design on the MA5616 reduces 30% power fees compared as before.
Challenges
30
P2P Private Enterprise Lines
Benefits
Solutions:
Vectoring-legacy TDM/ATM network cannot provide excellent service experience.
SME (micro businesses and small and mid-size enterprises) user and Executive(large companies)
user distribute 62% of revenue
High OPEX
Unified product to support copper and fiber access,
offer a wide range of integrated services
For residential users: deploy combo board in each site, bind the broadband and POTS service in
one copper line
P2P access for enterprise customers supports high bandwidth
Attracts more new business users by providing P2P access. P2P access of 1500 lines has been deployed in
Roman. 12.5
A unified access platform helps FASTWEB to reduce the middle and long term costs by 30%.
With the combo board, FASTWEB realizes the fast service deployment. Also the market share increases
quickly from 14% to 20% in Italy
Challenges
31
PSTN Reconstruction for Power Saving in Turkey
Benefits
Solutions:
PSTN devices cost $40 million per year for power fees (half is for air conditioners)
About 88% switches have been running for over 20 years and suppliers cannot provide backups.
Switches are in different types, which require heavy maintenance workloads.
The board density is low: 8 lines per board; renting fees are high for equipment rooms.
High density of 64 port POTS & 32 combo boards reduces space by 50% in COs, which meets value-
added requirements.
Huawei provides professional services to improve cut-over efficiency. More than 300,000 lines are
migrated each month, which makes Huawei as the 1st migration success vendor.
The unified outdoor cabinet solution reduces requirements on deployment environment.
8 million POTS & 3000 ISDN lines are migrated successfully.
After the PSTN is reconstructed, $60 million power fees are reduced within three years. The power fee
reduces by 40% from $40 million to $20.3 million per year.
After the PSTN is reconstructed, the occupied equipment room area reduces by 50% and 56,725 square
meters are released, reducing equipment room renting fees.
Challenges
32
Ultra-Broadband Achieving Rapid Service Growth
Benefits
Solutions:
With low population density and slow economic growth, broadband penetration in existing markets
fails to increase significantly.
Many areas in Bangkok are covered by other operators. Therefore, Triple T must provide high-quality
services to attract users.
Fierce competition requires service provisioning as soon as possible.
FTTC mode is used. Compared with the FTTH network, FTTC has some advantages, such as wider
coverage and lower investment.
The MA5616 is used to provide high-quality services. The existing copper cable resources are fully
used.
Customized cabinet H100 is provided to build remote sites. The H100 is of strong adaptability to
environment.
Higher bandwidth with additional IPTV service but lower price.
Users are growing rapidly, winning competition.
Achievement (Till 2012Q1): 9,000 FTTC sites (MA5616); 950,000 ADSL2+ lines in service
