    TOPIC 1: THE AHLUL BAYT:

We are known as Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslims. Shia means follower.

    Ithna-Ashermeans 12 (for the 12 Aimmah).

We are also known as Jafari because our 6th

Imam, Imam Jafar as-Sadiq(A), taught us most of the rules that we follow.

Although the basic belief of all Muslims is the same, there are 72 differentgroups in Islam. The rules of religion are slightly different in each group.

Most of the groups have died away, but there are still two major groups left:

    - The Sunni they believe in the Holy Prophet but not in the 12 Aimmah.- The Shia follows the Holy Prophet and the 12 Aimmah.

HADITH-E-SAFINAH: AHLUL BAYT ARE LIKE PROPHET NUHS ARK

Hadith-e-Safinah is when our Holy Prophet Muhammad (S) compared hisAhlul Bayt (A) as Prophet Nuhs ark.

Whoever loves and follows them will be saved and whoever goes against theirpurity will drown.

While holding the door of Holy Kaaba, Abu Dhar told that he had heard

Prophet Muhammad (S) say, "My family among you is like Noah's ark. Hewho sails in it will be safe, but he who holds back from it will bedrowned."

    Now you know.

That by saying we are Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslims we aretelling everyone that we follow the Holy Prophet and the12Aimmah (the Ahlul Bayt).

We are also known as Jafari because our 6th Imam, Imam

Jafar as-Sadiq (A), taught us most of the rules that wefollow.

    TOPIC 7: EID-UL-HAJ ALSO CALLED EID-UL-ADHA

Eid ul-Haj is also known as Eid ul-Adha (Eid of Sacrifice).

It takes place on the 10th of Dhulhijja, and marks the end of

    Haj of Muslims to Makka.

This Eid honours the sacrifice of Prophet Ismail by his father, Prophet Ibrahim.

One day, Prophet Ibrahim dreamt that he was sacrificing his young son,Prophet Ismail. This day is called Yawme Tarwiyahwhich means, the Day of the First Dream.

    Prophet Ibrahim often received Allah's

commands in his dreams, but because hewas being asked to actually kill his son, hewondered whether it was real.

He had the same dream the next day, and was now sure it was atrue command. So, the 9th of Zilhaj is known as Yawme Arafaat, which means the Day of Knowledge

So, Prophet Ibrahim took his son into the desert.

On the way, Shaitan, disguised as an old man, tried to convince Prophet Ibrahim that he wasmaking a terrible mistake in killing his son.

Three times Shaitan came, andeach time Prophet Ibrahim madehim go away by throwing sevensmall stones at him.

When they reached Mina, Prophet Ibrahim laid his son on theground and took a knife.

    throat of his son.

But when he removed the blindfold, he was surprised to seethat he had slaughtered a male sheep instead, and that hisson was standing safe beside him.

A BEAUTIFUL STORY ABOUT EID-UL-HAJ OR EID-UL-ADHA:THE BICYCLE STORY:

My father never liked anyone who was lazy or anyone whowasted what they had so that they never had enough. But for

those who were really in need, his heart was as big as alloutdoors. It was from him that I (Mahdi) learned the greatestjoy in life comes from giving, not from receiving.

It was a cold winter day before Eidul Adha (Haj)1425 A.H. in a village near Kashmir. I was fifteenyears old and feeling very sad because there justhad not been enough money to buy me the bicyclethat I had wanted for Eidul Adha.

I was still feeling sorry for myself, when my father came

back from outside and said, "Come on, Mahdi, dress upwell, it's cold out tonight." I was really upset then. Not onlywas not I am getting the bicycle for Eid, but now my fatherwas dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reasonthat I could see. We had already done all the chores, and Icould not think of anything else that needed doing,

especially not on a night like this.

But I knew he was not very patient, so I got up and put my boots back on andgot my cap and coat. My mum gave me a mysterious smile as I opened thedoor to leave the house. Something was up, but I did not know what.

O No! I thought, more work because there in front of the house, the horseswere already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to dowas not going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched upthis sled unless we were going to carry a big load.

My father was already up on the seat, reins in hand. Ireluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold wasalready biting at me. I was not happy. When I was on,my father pulled the sled around the house and stopped

in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. "Ithink we will put on the high sideboards," he said."Here, help me." The high sideboards! It had been abigger job than I wanted to do with just the lowsideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot biggerwith the high sideboards on.

After we had exchanged the sideboards, my father went into the woodshedand came out with an armload of wood - What was he doing?

Finally I said something. "Dad," I asked, "what are you doing?"

"You been by the Widow Mrs. Mukhtar's house lately?" he asked.

The Widow Mrs. Mukhtar lived about two miles down the road. Her husbandhad died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest beingeight. Sure, I had been by, but so what?

    "Yeah," I said, "Why?"

"I rode by just today," he said. "Little Jaffer was out digging around in thewoodpile trying to find a few chips. They are out of wood, Mahdi."

That was all he said and then he turnedand went back into the woodshed foranother armload of wood. I followedhim. We loaded the sled so high that Ibegan to wonder if the horses would be

able to pull it. Finally, we stopped andthen he went to the house.

When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder anda smaller sack of something in his left hand. "What's in the little sack?" Iasked. "Shoes. They're out of shoes. Little Jaffer just had gunny sackswrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I gotthe children some sweets too. It just would not be Eidul Adha (Haj) withoutMithai."

We rode the two miles to Widow Mukhtar's home, pretty much in silence. Itried to think through what my father was doing. We did not have much ourselves. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though mostof what was left now was still in the form of logs that I wouldhave to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. Wealso had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knewwe did not have any money, so why was he buying themshoes and sweets?

Really, why was he doing any of this? Mrs. Mukhtar had closer neighboursthan us; it should not have been our concern.

We reached the Mukhtar's house and unloaded the wood as quietly aspossible, and then we took the sweets, flour and shoes to the door. Weknocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, "Who is it?""It is me Karim Khan, Ma'am, and my son, Mahdi. Could we come in for abit?"

Mrs. Mukhtar opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrappedaround her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sittingin front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all.Mrs. Mukhtar fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp.

"We brought you a few things, Ma'am," my father said and setdown the sack of flour. I put the sweet on the table. Then hehanded her the sack that had the shoes in it.

She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes outone pair at a time. There was a pair for her andone for each of the children - strong shoes, thebest, shoes that would last.

I watched her carefully. Tears filled her eyes and startedrunning down her cheeks. She looked up at my father likeshe wanted to say something, but it would not come out."We brought a load of wood too, Ma'am," he said.

He turned to me and said, "Mahdi, go bring in enough to last a while. Let's getthat fire up to size and heat this place up." I wasn't the same person when Iwent back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and as muchas I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too.

In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace andtheir mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks with so muchgratitude in her heart that she could not speak.

My heart swelled within me and a joy that I had never known before, filled mysoul. I had given at Eid many times before, but never when it had made so

much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people.I soon had the fire blazing and everyone's spiritssoared. The kids started giggling when my fatherhanded them each a piece of sweet and Mrs.Mukhtar looked on with a smile that probably hadnot crossed her face for a long time. She finallyturned to us. "May Allah bless you," she said. "Iknow Allah has sent you. The children and I have

been praying that He would send some help to spare us."

In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in

my eyes again. I had never thought of my father in those exact terms before, but after Mrs. Mukhtar mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I wassure that a better man than my father had never walked the earth.

I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for my Mumand me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it.

My father insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazedwhen they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get.

Tears were running down Widow Mrs. Mukhtar's faceagain when we stood up to leave. My father took each ofthe kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clungto him and did not want us to go. I could see that theymissed their father, and I was glad that I still had mine.

At the door he turned to Mrs. Mukhtar and said, "My wife wanted me to inviteyou and the children for Eidul Adha (Haj) dinner tomorrow. The chicken will bemore than the three of us can eat, we will be by to get you about five. It will benice to have some little ones around again.

Mrs. Mukhtar nodded and said, "Thank you, Brother Karim Khan. I do nothave to say, "'May Allah Bless you,' I know for certain that He will." Out on thesled I felt warmth that came from deep within and I did not even notice thecold. When we had gone a ways, my father turned to me and said, "Mahdi, Iwant you to know something.

Your Mum and I have been tucking a little money away here and there all yearso we could buy that bicycle for you, but we did not have quite enough. Thenyesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by tomake things square.

Your Mum and I were real excited, thinking that now we could get you thatbicycle, and I started into town this morning to do just that. But on the way Isaw little Jaffer out scratching in the woodpile, so I spent the money for shoesand a little sweet for those children. I hope you understand."

I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood verywell, and I was so glad he had done it. Now the bicycle seemed very low onmy list of importance. My father had given me a lot more. He had given methe look on Widow Mrs. Mukhtar's face and the glowing smiles of her threechildren.

For the rest of my life, Whenever, I saw any of the Mukhtar's, or split a blockof wood, I remembered riding home beside my father that night. He had givenme much more than a bicycle that night; he had given me the best Eidul Adhaof my life.

    Moral:

Eid is a time for sharing. Sometimes we get more happiness fromgiving than receiving. We must thank Allah for all that we have and

always try and help those who do not have all that we do.

A STORY ABOUT EID-UL-FITR: MY BROTHER:

Shuaib received a car from his brother as aRamadhan Eid present. On Eidul Fitr whenShuaib came out of his office, a poor little boy waswalking around the shiny new car, admiring it. "Isthis your car, Uncle?" he asked. Shuaib nodded.

"My brother gave it to me for Ramadhan Eid." The boy was surprised.

"You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost youanything? Boy, I wish..." He hesitated. Of course Shuaib knew whathe was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother likethat. But what the boy said really shocked Shuaib. "I wish," the boy

went on, "that I could be a brother like that." Shuaib looked at theboy and then he asked, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?""Oh yes, I would love that."

After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining and said, "Uncle, would you mind driving in front of my house?" Shuaib smiled a little. Hethought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours thathe could ride home in a big automobile.

But Shuaib was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two stepsare?" the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little whileShuaib heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. Hewas carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on thebottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed tothe car.

"There he is, uncle, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him forRamadhan Eid and it did not cost him a penny. And some day I'm gonna giveyou one just like it...then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in theShop windows that I have been trying to tell you about."

Shuaib got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyedolder brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorableholiday ride. That Eidul Fitr, Shuaib learned what Prophet Muhammad (S)meant when he had said: "love for your brother what you love foryourself".

The miracle frightened Fir'aun and he turned to his ministers for advice. Theytold him that Prophet Musa was just a good magician and that their ownmagicians could easily perform such tricks.

Fir'aun called all the great magicians to his court. When they were told whathad to be done, they were not worried. They threw pieces of rope on theground and these cords began to wriggle like snakes.

But when Prophet Musa (A) cast his staff down his serpent ate all the pieces

    A STORY ABOUT PROPHET MUSA:

One day Prophet Musa was passing through a unfruitful hill.He noticed a pious person busy in prayer sitting in a cave ofthe hill. Prophet Musa felt the urge to meet and talk to the

    pious person.

Prophet Musa went near and greeted him. The piousperson asked without much interest, "Who are you?"Prophet Musa said, "I am Musa!"

The pious person asked, "Are you the Prophet Musa?

    Prophet Musa said, "Yes!"

The pious person said, "Then ask Allah to Grant my wish!"

Prophet Musa asked, "What is it that you want?"

The pious person said, "Since the last one hundred years Iam sitting here praying to Allah. I don't do anything otherthan the Prayer. Ask Allah, what He will give me for myefforts?"

Prophet Musa said, "I shall find about it immediately." Heimmediately climbed up the hill and called aloud, "O

Sustainer Allah! This person wants to know about thereward for his prayers! Tell me, what shall I inform him?"

He heard the sound, "O Musa! Tell him, we shall inform him about hisreward tomorrow."

Prophet Musa went to the pious person and gave the message to him.

The pious person said, "Its fine! Tomorrow is not much of a time!"

The pious person was in the habit of going to a nearby canal early every

morning for bathing and fetching some water for his use. Therefore, the nextmorning too he started for the canal but he lost his way and reachedsomewhere else. Because of the sun's heat he became very thirsty and tired.

He sat on a lonely boulder and started thinking about his death. At that timehe found another person coming from the other direction. He waved to theperson to come to him. When the person came closer, he asked him to helphim with some water.

The visiting person said, "Where is any water in this jungle? Whateverlittle I have is only for me."

The pious person started crying. The other person said, "Fine! What will yougive me if I give you a glass of water?"

The pious person said, "I don't have anything. I have been busy in thecave praying for the last 100 years."

The other person said, "If you agree to transfer to me the Rewards foryour prayers of 100 years, I shall give you a glass of water."

The pious person thought, if he lived, he could pray for a further period to getthe Reward from Allah. He said, "I am ready to transfer to you my rewardfor the 100 years of my prayers.

The other person gave him a glass full of water and the pious person returnedto his cave.

In the morning Prophet Musa got a Revelation that the pious personexchanged his 100 years' prayers to another person in exchange for a glassof water. Ask the man to settle the value of the glasses of water that hehad been drinking during the last 100 years!

Therefore, Prophet Musa went to the cave and told to the person that he hada message for him from Allah.

The pious person said, "O Prophet Musa! I have already sold my 100years of prayers!"

Prophet Musa said, "Yes! I know. But Allah has said that when the valueof 100 years of prayer is one glass of water, then you must settle thevalue of the water you had been drinking over the last hundred years."

    2

When the pious person heard this, he was shocked and shouted, "O Prophet

Musa! Please ask to Allah to forgive my sins! Allah is The Most Kind andThe Most Merciful!"

Prophet Musa got the Revelation, "tell the pious person! Your prayer ofthis moment pleased Allah more than your prayers of a hundred years

and Allah has given to you rewards for a years of prayers!"

Prophet Isas mother = Bibi Maryam

    He had no father.

When Prophet Isa was 30 years old, he got the order of Allah to start hismission and the Divine Book, Injil, was revealed to him.

He too could perform miracles like:- make a dead person alive again- make a blind person see again- curing illnesses

These miracles made the Jew believe in him and others became his enemies.

He chose 12 people from his followers and taught them from the Injil, so thatthey could travel and teach others.

The people who hated him, tried to kill him.

At this time, Allah raised Prophet Isa to the heavens to keep him safe.

In the meantime, Yahuda went to his house but found it empty. While he wasthere, Allah changed his face to look like Prophet Isas.

They gave, Yahuda, one of hisfollowers, 30 pieces of silver totell them which house ProphetIsa was in. They wanted to nailhim to a cross and kill him.

When he came out of the house to tell theenemies that the house was empty, theygrabbed him and took him away.

Although he told them that he wasntProphet Isa, they wouldnt believe him andhe was crucified instead.

Today the Jews and Christians believethat Prophet Isa died on the cross.

When our 12 Imam (A) re-appears, Prophet Isa will come down from

the heavens and pray behind him.Prophet Muhammad (S)

PROPHET ISA: A POEM ABOUT PROPHETS AND THEIR BOOKS:

Allah sent the Prophets to teach humans

That Allah is one without partners or sonsand from all evils we should keep away.and only to Allah we should pray.

Of all the Prophets Adam was the firstand he had an enemy ShaItan the cursed.

After Adam many more Prophets cameand the message they brought was the same.

Nuh, Ilyaas, Ibrahim, Ishaaq and IdrisAll came with the message of peace.

Musa, Dawood, Isa, Yaqub and YusufWere also sent with the very same stuff.

All Prophets came with a mission definedTo help humans become pious and kind.Against bad and evil, they were a shield

And to some Prophets, books were revealed

For example to Isa, Allah sent the Injeeland Tawrat to Musa Allah did reveal.

The Zabur was given to Prophet Dawud

and all these books, Allah had approved.

After all these Prophets the last one cameand to deliver the message was his only aim.

He was their leader and greatest of allfrom amongst the Prophets he stood tall.

The word of Allah, which is the Quran, was revealed to him - this good honest man.

Allah selected him and cleaned his heartand from the rest of man he was set apart.

Just like Muhammad was the last and best; The Quran is also ranked above the rest.

Every word is of Allah - never to be changed.Free from error - Allah himself had arranged.

After Muhammad no more Prophets will appearand the Quran is the last and that is clear.

Guidance from Allah to all of mankindand to the reality of life it does remind
