    & m.p. 15F155O CQlD 58.2' midim);B, a~. 2W, fd, -58.1'). den-

tioal derivativez wera obtained on methylatlon or benaoylation of 4 and 2

and A was aonverted into 2 by repeated rearystalliaation from ethanal-

pyridine. Parallel resultrr were obtained in the g-perseltol series.6 The

facile nrearrangement of the labile forma and the \ d R valuea suggests

    polymorphism.

Through the aourtemy of Dr. R.K . Riahtmyer samples 6 of the lr3-

5r7-di-g-benzylidene derivatives of g- and &- perseitol were made avall-

able; the m.p.8. of these compounds were ae reaorded.6 All four compounds

gave indietinguishable infra-red speatra both in Rujol mulls and KRr diske.

Thle is compelling evidence that the substances aomprlee two pairs of

polymorphio forma not diastereolaomers, I t i s noteworthy that both ais-

and trans- 1:3-O_benzylldene glyaeritol 7 were unaffeoted by treatment

    with hot ethanol-pyridine.

From the reaotion a of magnesium dlphenyl with methyl 213~anhydro-

4:6-g-benzylldene-+allopranoeide three forma of methyl 4;6-g-benzylidene

    -2-deoxy-2-G-phenyl-u-kgluoopyranoride were isolated (c, m,p. 163.5O, CC .,+

    143' (CHC13); , ma. 194.5', CaD * MO 2, mp2 and 2 were considered to be diastereolsomerla at

and 3 to be a mixture of 2 and 2. Renzoylation of

of the produat gave 2; rearyatallleation of crude

    C and eaponlflaatlon

    3 (m.p. 139-l45O) rom

ethanol gave a product zith an even wider m.p. range.

Although the pattern of behaviour of thwe compounds resemble8

that of the di-O_benzylldene-perseitols the EJ , values suggests that they

are not polymorphs. Specimens of 2, 2 and g were kindly provided for

examination by Dr. G.R. Rlohards; the m.p.s. of C and 2 had not changed on

storage but that of g had become more diffuse (150-1600). The lnfre-red

    spectra of s, 2 and E in K C1 disks suggested C and 2 to be different

oompounds end E to be a mixture of Cand 2. I f, as seems probable, methyl2t3-anhydro-4t6-~-benxylidene-a-~-ellopyrenoslde is a pure diastereoisomer

then any atereoohemloal differenoe between C and 2 must arise in the

reaction of the epoxide compound with magnesium diphenyl.

The reaction of benzaldehyde ri tb glvceritol 9represente a unique

case since the relevant products, cis-and trans- lrj-g-bensylidene-w -

glyceritol, may be considered diastereoleomeric at either C2 or the

aoetal carbon and further, intra-molecular hydrogen banding lo w

significantly influence the amount of each Isomer formed in the reaction,

Similar considerations apply to the reaction of R-nitrobensaldehyde and

    glyoeritol.ll

The reaotion of bensaldehyde with sugar derivatives to yield

diasterecisomerio 5-membered cyclio acetala (lrJ -dioxolan derivatives)

is well substantiated; thus methyl R+rabopyranoslde yields l2 two

3:4-Q-beneylidene derivatives lsoleted as the bensoates (m.p, 126-127O,

    [&) + 1740 (CIiC13); m.p. 100-102, @R + 2Y0). Methyl a-@=nno-
