What does domestic mean?

Domestic: no longer wild, but has been bred or tamed by humans.

What are some other reasons why domestic animals are important to us?

ARTIFICIAL SELECTIONArtificial Selection:

Technique in which individual plants or animals with desirable traits are bred together to develop plants or animals with specific traits

Also called selective breeding

By breeding animals with the most desirable qualities, farmers were able to manipulate the characteristics of domestic animals over a number of generations.

What benefits of using selective breeding in agriculture are there? Created for specific areas or regions Created to have a better food supply Mature faster Resistant to insects and diseases

THE THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION

Artificial selection can produce great diversity

Natural Selection: A naturally occurring process in which only those organisms with the best traits for survival in an environment survive to reproduce; over time this process results in changes in the genetic characteristics of a species.

4 STATEMENTS ABOUT NATURAL SELECTION

1. All organisms produce more offspring than can possibly survive

2. There is variation within each species

3. Some variations increase the chances of an organism surviving to reproduce

4. Over time, variations that are passed on lead to changes in the genetic characteristics of a species.
