ST LUKE’S CHURCHThe New Name, the ladies of the Diocesan choir and the energetic young Taiko drummers gave us greatly contrasting musical experiences through Holy Week. We sang nostalgically to golden oldies, immersed ourselves in beautiful harmonies, and felt powerful rhythms trembling through our bodies.  Then there were quieter times when we were able to sit and reflect upon artistic images of Christ's journey to the Cross, and experience the solemnity of Good Friday's meditations.St. Luke's offered hospitality through the week's events and we thank all who donated food and willingly served tea and coffee and washed up.  A few of us roused ourselves for 6.00am on Easter Day:  the dawn chorus was amazing and breakfast in church was fun.  A church lends itself to musical encounters, if you have any suggestions for future events please pass them on.The March prize bingo raised a grand total of £364.40 for St Luke’s, thank you for all your support. Two further PRIZE BINGO’s are planned for the May bank holidays - Monday 04 May and Monday 25 May, both in Stickney Youth Centre at 7.30pm.  Again we will be grateful for any donations of prizes, and hope some of you will be able to enjoy these evenings with us.On SATURDAY 09 MAY we will be holding our annual CHRISTIAN AID event between 10.00am and 12 noon.  The usual COPPER PATH and SILVER CROSS will be laid and we hope young people will assist with these.  There will be a raffle and tombola as well as free tea/coffee/squash and biscuits for all who join in.  Please come along or pass on your donations.  The money we raise will be added to contributions from other churches, and then used to fund vital projects around the world.

Closer to home CENTREPOINT in Boston has received the food and other useful items collected in St Luke's through Lent and Easter.  Thank you for such generosity, your gifts were greatly appreciated.May new life and growth, the colours of gardens and hedgerows, and the days of warm sunshine gladden all our hearts this springtime.

KIDDIES CORNERMay Facts

The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. Although summer does not officially begin until June, May Day really marks its beginning. May Day celebrations have their origins in the Roman festival of Flora, Goddess of fruit and flowers, which marked the beginning of summer. Although May Day is now the first day of the month of May, before 1752, when the calendar was changed, it was 11 days earlier.

A traditional May Day dance is known as Maypole dancing. On May Day, young trees were cut down and stuck into the ground in the village to mark the arrival of summer. People danced around these trees which became known as maypoles. The tallest maypole is said to have been erected in London on the Strand in 1661- it stood over 143 feet high.

Brussel sprout and Potato Croquettes

Thought we'd have a recipe that tried to balance out the copious amounts of chocolate all children will have eaten in the last month!

Ingredients200g brussel sprouts (I know, just give it a go!)trimmed and sliced 500g potatoes, cooked and crushed 1 egg beaten 50g plain flour 100g finely ground breadcrumbs, seasoned 300ml vegetable oil 200g tin chopped tomatoes small bunch coriander, chopped 1 tsp Worcester sauce (more if you like a bit more kick) 1 shallot, finely sliced

Method: 1. Drop the sprouts into boiling water and blanch for 2-3 minutes.

Drain and refresh with cold water. 2. Mix with the potato, mashing them together with a fork. Season

well and form the mixture into 12 croquettes.3. Place the egg in a bowl, the flour on a plate and the breadcrumbs on

a second plate. Dip each croquette into the flour first, to coat, then the egg and lastly the breadcrumbs. Make sure each is fully covered.

4. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours.5. To make the dip combine the tomatoes, coriander, Worcester sauce

and shallot, season and set aside.6. Pour the oil into a large, deep frying pan, to a depth of about 4cm,

and place over a medium-high heat. Fry the croquettes until golden all over for a total of 5 minutes – you may need to do this in 2 batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.

7. Drain on kitchen paper and serve immediately with the dip.

Gardening tips for May!If 'capricious' is the keyword for April, then 'seductive' and 'deceptive' are two words which probably best describe May.  Seduced by longer days and higher temperatures, gardeners begin to think of sowing and planting outdoors in earnest.  But beware!  Seeds sown in ground which is not sufficiently warmed can fail to germinate or if they do germinate, can be killed by late frosts or nocturnal attacks from slugs; and that is not even mentioning the weeds or the possibility of an early drought which can be dangerous for young plants, unless the ground is in good heart and well mulched as an insurance. However, here are some of the jobs which can be undertaken this month which, with a bit of luck, will lead to rapidly filling vegetable beds and immaculate rows of young plants.1)  Sow cut-and-come again varieties of salads such as mizuna, mustard Red Giant and rocket which can be harvested by cutting the leaves and within a short time will be ready to cut again.  Another good variety is 'Green Salad Bowl'.  Sow successively every few weeks for a constant supply.2)  Courgettes can be started off in small 3" pots ready for planting out later.  Put them in the ground with a good mound of manure or compost dug into their planting position.  Cover early plantings with cloches, keep them well fed and watered during the growing season and they will reward you with lots of pickings.3)  Tomato plants should now be being pricked out in pots (3") prior to planting out in their final position in the greenhouse, or later, outdoors. It is still not too late to sow if you haven't already - try 'Sungold' or 'Gardeners Delight for taste.  Cucumbers are worth investing some time in - I've been recommended 'La Diva' for its small sweet and juicy fruit which ripens easily.4)  Tuck straw or mats under strawberries before the fruit begins to ripen and after you have eliminated the final weeds.  Cover with a net to discourage the birds, making sure the netting doesn't touch the fruit or the birds will peck through.5)   Plant the last of your seed potatoes, the main crop, this month.  Space these later sowings every 15/18", with rows 24" apart.  Cover the tubers with soil to leave a slight ridge and watch out for late frosts as the green shoots appear. Cover with weighted newspapers, cloches, fleece or even a straw mulch. As usual good luck with your efforts.  In conclusion, a few lines from a Joni Mitchell song from 1969.(Remember?): 'We are stardust, we are golden, and we got to get ourselves back to the garden.'

The seat at the corner of Hall Lane and the Main Road has been deliberately damaged by someone jumping on it. It took a few jumps to actually break the wood. The vandalism took place sometime over the weekend of 04/06 April 2015.
