might find that this is a life changing event. If you’re unable to come to the
informational meeting but are still interested, please send an email to
[email protected] (Brian Maurer), and let him know that you’re interested in
receiving information that was provided at the meeting. If you have any questions
about the program, you can email Brian, or Lindsey Wisnewski

Now Accepting Applications: A&S Student Council
A&S Student Council's main mission is to provide resources and
representation for students belonging to MU’s College of Arts and Science.
This is accomplished primarily by coordinating both social and educational
programming, allocating scholarships, awards, and grants and articulating
student concerns to the university’s administration on a regular basis.
Applications are due via email by Wed., Oct. 24, at 5 p.m. To learn more,
contact an A&S Student Council member.
Research Opportunity
You are invited to consider joining an interesting research project analyzing mother-
child conversations about their disagreements (for example, about getting their
homework done, cleaning their rooms, fighting with siblings). The children are
5th graders, so 10 or 11 years old.
This semester, the professors involved in the research (Drs. Carlo, Ispa, and Horstman)
are looking for students who are detail-oriented and enjoy thinking about parent-child
interaction. The work will involve watching videotapes of mother-child conversations
and transcribing (typing word-for-word) what they say. The families who participated
in the research are African American, European American, and Latino, and we plan to
match transcribers with families of the same ethnicity. All work will be done in Gentry
Hall. About twice a month, we will schedule a meeting to give everyone an
opportunity to discuss their observations and practice some coding.
This rich learning opportunity is available as a volunteer research experience (which
looks great for a resume!), for academic credit, or for pay through the Work Study
program and additional options. Please email Dr. Haley Horstman
at [email protected] if you are interested!
