HW#0401 Thought Question: Explain how the Ochieng brothers helped their hometown of Lwala, Kenya. Why was this project so important to them, and how did they overcome the challenges they encountered? Support your response with information from the lesson. Milton and Fred Ochieng were born in a tiny village in Lwala, Kenya. They left the village to go to medical school in the U.S. Then, they returned to Lwala to open the town's first healthcare clinic.

The brothers felt like they wanted to give back to the people of the village who had helped them raise money to go to the U.S. for school. People in this small village had no medical care available to them before the brothers opened the clinic.

The brothers raised money to build and operate the clinic and now see thousands of patients a year, most of whom cannot pay for the services.

The clinic is located in a rural area of Kenya, which lacks basic resources like clean water and electricity.

The people who live in this area lack safe drinking water, proper nutrition, and medical care. The brothers wanted to help solve some of these problems for the people of their small village.

Procedure Motivation: Today we’ll learn about how Prince William’s brother helped to protect elephants.1. Independent work

HW#0401 Thought Question: Explain what has happened to elephant populations since 1800. Be sure to include the reasons why this occurred. What did Prince William do in an effort to help the elephants? Do you think his actions will make a difference? Explain why or why not. Support your response with information from the article. In Africa, elephant populations have dwindled from 26 million in the year 1800 to fewer than 1 million today. Asian elephant numbers have dropped to fewer than 50,000, and the species is classified as endangered.

The decline in elephant populations is partly due to the ivory trade. Elephants are often poached for their ivory tusks. The ivory is then used in many items, ranging from piano keys to jewelry.

In March 2015, Britain's Prince William went to China. He urged the country to do more to deter poaching and the illegal ivory trade. He also hoped to call attention to the plight of the elephants by visiting an elephant sanctuary.

Student responses about whether Prince William's actions will make a difference will vary depending on the student's point of view.

HW#0401 Thought Question: Describe the planet Kepler-452b and how it compares and contrasts with Earth. Why are scientists excited about the discovery of this planet? Use facts and details from the article in your response. Similarities:o Both planets orbit a similar star at about the same distance away.o Kepler-452b takes 385 days to orbit its star, just a little longer than Earth

takes for a one-year lap around the sun.o Kepler-452b is just a bit farther from its star than Earth is from the sun, which

is important because it makes the planet warm enough, potentially, to have liquid water on its surface. Water could mean life.

Differences:o Kepler-452b is 60 percent larger in diameter than Earth.o Kepler-452b is about 6 billion years old, or 1.5 billion years older than Earth.o Kepler-452b's star is believed to be older, bigger, and brighter than Earth's

sun.o Kepler-452b is in a solar system that is 1,400 light-years from Earth. It is in

the constellation Cygnus.o Kepler-452b is believed to have a mass five times greater than Earth's and

twice as much gravity. Its atmosphere is likely thicker and has more clouds than Earth.

Why scientists are excited about the discovery of Kepler-452b:o Of all the planets found so far, Kepler-452b is the most like Earth. Scientists

say that the exoplanet system (Kepler-452b and its star) is the closest so far to our Earth-sun twin system, and it may be habitable.

Then, in your own words, write an explanation of the events that took place. Use information from your reading to complete your response. Some greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, help create "a greenhouse effect" on Earth.

Most of the solar energy that reaches Earth is absorbed and released back into the atmosphere as heat. Greenhouse gases absorb and trap some of the energy that would otherwise bounce back into space. This "greenhouse effect" helps keep Earth warm enough for living things to thrive because it allows the atmosphere to retain heat. Without any greenhouse gases, Earth would be freezing.

Certain human activities produce additional levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, which have increased the greenhouse effect, causing the temperature of Earth's surface to rise.

One effect of this is melting Arctic ice. Less ice is freeing up new sea routes. It's also revealing untapped mineral resources on the ocean bottom. Because of the ice melt, the explorers could not reach the North Pole

safely, so they decided to end their expedition early.

HW #0310 Complete the “Thought question: Write a summary of today's article. As you write your summary, complete the following steps: In September 2015, scientists reported that a NASA spacecraft found evidence of liquid water on Mars.

The evidence consists largely of dark, narrow streaks on the surface of the planet. They appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year.

The streaks were spotted by a high-resolution, telescopic camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Another instrument onboard the orbiter detected the chemical signature of salt compounds combined with water.

Since salt prevents water from freezing at extremely low temperatures, this could explain how water could exist in liquid form—and be able to flow—on Mars, which is very cold, even during its warmer months.

The source of the water remains a mystery. However, its presence could point to the possibility of life on Mars.

Be sure to include vocabulary from the lesson when you write your answer. Eruptions release highly concentrated levels of gases into the air, which could pose a serious health risk for people who breathe it in.

Emergency officials are preparing to evacuate the area if the winds shift.

Living near the volcano is hazardous because the volcano releases noxious gases, particularly sulfur dioxide.

Volcanoes can form where two tectonic plates meet, or in the middle of a plate where magma rises to meet the earth's surface in what's called a "hot spot."

When these gases combine with oxygen and atmospheric moisture, they produce volcanic air pollution.

Support your response with information from the lesson. An international team of scientists believes it has located the long-lost skeleton of Princess Eadgyth—a nobleperson who lived during the 10th century. Scientists found a coffin bearing her name inside a cathedral in Germany. Inside the coffin was a skeleton. Tests are being performed to determine the age of the bones. One of the tests measures isotopes inside a tooth to determine where the person grew up. Scientists hope to know within six months if the bones are those of the princess.

Princess Eadgyth has been compared to Princess Diana of 20th-century England. Like England's Princess Diana, Eadgyth dazzled the public with her charm and charity, and she was very popular. "She was a very, very popular person," said Horton. "She was sort of the Diana of her day if you like—pretty and full of good works."

Some experts had doubts as to whether the remains truly belonged to the late princess. Historians believe Eadgyth's body was relocated several times—a common practice for royalty. Therefore, it is possible that the bones were misplaced and swapped with someone else's during one of the moves.

natural born citizen of the United States, or someone who was born to parents who were both born in the U.S. 2)The person must also have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. No one else is eligible to become president. The Founding Fathers made this requirement to make it less likely that a president could be influenced by a foreign government.

In addition, 3) presidents must be at least 35 years old. This rule aims to make sure that the nation's leader has gained enough wisdom and life experience.

The Constitution puts no other limits on the presidency. There's no mention of gender, ethnic background, education level, or even political experience. The Constitution and the term-limit amendment set official boundaries for the presidency.

how residents responded to the widespread, deadly illness. Support your response with information from the readings. The bubonic plague, also known as the "Black Death," was an epidemic that spread throughout Europe during the 1330s, killing millions of people. (1. What is the Black Death and how it affected the people there?)

Doctors at the time had no idea what caused the disease or how to treat it. Their attempted treatments were ineffective, and as alarming numbers of people died, the healthy fled their villages or isolated themselves—even from family members—for fear of getting sick. Funerals became rare because there were so many bodies to bury. (2. How did the doctors and people deal with this disease?)

People began to question their religion, since so many people, including clergy members, were suffering. (3. What did people begin to question?)

The Black Death also affected the European economy. The plague upset the feudal system. As the death toll rose (Europe lost about one-third of its population), there became a shortage of workers, and therefore, more opportunities for serfs. Historians believe that the plague was one of the factors that brought about the end of serfdom. (4. How did the Black Death affect the Europeans’ political system?)

Procedure Motivation: Let students know the South Carolina’s law and it was rejected by the federal law

Some lawmakers in South Carolina believe that requiring voters to show photo ID in order to vote prevents voter fraud. They believe that the requirement stops people from voting twice or pretending to be a different person at the polls.

The U.S. Justice Department feels the law discriminates against some minorities in South Carolina who might not be able to cast ballots because they don't have the right type of photo ID.

Opponents believe the law was put in place to prevent certain groups of people from voting and that it discriminates against minorities.

Those in favor of the law say there are provisions in the law that allow any voter to obtain a free photo ID.

In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which determined the voting jurisdictions that were to be controlled by the federal government. This means that the South Carolina law can be passed without permission from the Justice Department
