The ancient city of Ephesus, located in western Asia Minor at the mouth of the Cayster River, was an important __________. Ephesus had excellent access to both river valleys that allowed it to flourish as a commercial center. PURPOSE

There are ______ verses in Ephesians, over half contain identical expressions with those in Colossians. Colossians, however, is abrupt, argumentative, and seemingly compressed. Ephesians presents a bigger, finished picture that is meditative, instructive, and expansive.

Chapter One

Introduction.

1:1. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To God's holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:.

Apostle:- An apostle is a person who had been _____________________ and sent on special service, and who was gifted by the Holy Spirit for that service. (Gk. Apostolos):- Envoy, ambassador, or messenger commissioned to carry out the instructions of the commissioning agent.

Recipients.

The saints in Ephesus. It may have been written about the same time he wrote Colossians and Philemon, while he was in _______________, most likely in Rome. Ephesus (present day -Turkey) was a very prosperous commercial city in the Roman province of Asia Minor. It conducted international trade, a very thriving ___________________ business, and a theater that seated 20,000 people. Being _______________ with Him in the heavenliness; Our adoption, Redemption, Election.

Paul reminded the saints that God has already bless them with every Spiritual ___________________ in Christ, and because of that, every thing they needed in Christ was in the Heavenly Realms.

Heavenly Realms:-  The phrase “heavenly places” or “heavenly realms” is used several times in the book of Ephesians (1:3, 20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12). This phrase is translated from the Greek word that means “the sphere of spiritual _______________.” “Heavenly realms” can refer to both angelic and demonic activity. Ephesians 1:20 says that God “raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.” But Ephesians 6:12 speaks of evil forces in the same realm: “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against . . . the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

This is called “the doxology” because it recites what God has done and is an expression to Him of worship, praise, and honor. Paul also wrote about the blessings that belong to the saints through Christ. God has blessed us with all of the blessings in the heavenly realms.

All spiritual gifts and service abilities also flow out of these ________________ blessings that God gives to every believer at the time of salvation.

1:4. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. God who is omniscient, whose wisdom is past finding out spoke through Paul saying.

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! [34] “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” [35] “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” [36] For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36.

Nothing surprises God, he knew that man would not remain pure as he intended, and because he is a Holy God, and nothing impure cold be in his presence, he provided a way that man would be accepted, and that is “in Him”. He chose us “in him”. To become holy and blameless cold only be done through him. 2Cor.5:17.

1:5-6. In love [5] he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will--- [6] to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

Predestined:- God had determined beforehand that those who believe in Christ will be ____________ into his family and conformed to His son. (Rom.8:29-30). For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. [30] And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

This involves a ______________ on His part and it is done through “Love”. It is based on the good pleasure of His perfect will (vv.5,9,11). It’s purpose is to glorify God. V.14. But it does not relieve man

of his responsibility to ___________________ the gospel in order to bring to pass personally God’s predestination. v13.

1:7-8. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace [8] that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding,

Redemption in Him means that mankind have been bought with the price of Christ’s _____________ ( 1Co 6:20 ; 1Tm 2:6 ; 1Pt 1:18-19 ) and have been redeemed from sin, Satan, and the misery of sinful self. The result of redemption is a sending away or banishment of our sin debt, resulting in complete _______________________.

1:9. He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, [10] to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment---to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

Mystery:- this is something that which has been formerly been kept in secret in the unposed of God, but has now been disclosed. Col.1:27. 1:10. To be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment---to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

The goal of history is based upon God’s divine purpose concerning the our Lord Jesus Christ, for whom, through whom, and whom all things exists.. The goal is to establish a new world order of which Jesus Christ is the acknowledged Head (v. 22). He is the head of a reunited universe. He now ________ and reigns from God’s right hand; one day He will _________________ His kingdom and bring in the new heavens and the new earth, fulfilling and finalizing God’s redemptive purpose. This is what is involved in bringing together things in heaven and things on earth in Him.

1:11. In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

Paul discusses the end result of redemption from a standpoint that stretches from eternity past to eternity future. The recipients of this inheritance are people whom God has chosen and predestined. They come to faith in Christ, not by not by chance, coercion, But by the enabling of God’s Spirit. Building on OT themes, Paul envisioned those who have received this _________________ as standing in continuity with the covenant people of OT times.

1:12. in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

The gift of the Holy Spirit was _________________ by the prophets and by our Lord Jesus ( Joel 2:28-29 ; Jn 14:15-26 ; 16:5-16 ). The Holy Spirit is described as both a _________ showing ownership, and as a pledge pointing to future redemption. Though believers have not yet experienced redemption in full, God will bring about final redemption (life in His immediate presence) for all who have received the Spirit.

1:14. Ephesians 1:13-14.And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, [14] who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession---to the praise of his glory.

False Security All who will be saved forever are saved because of Christ’s work on the cross and God’s power to keep them saved. Known as __________ security, this truth is often stated as, “Once saved, always saved.” Unfortunately, many people think that simply making a confession at some point in their lives means they are saved even if their lives bear no Christian fruit. Some even think they can live like the Devil and yet be safe because of their earlier _________________. But genuine faith requires genuine repentance ( Mk 4:12 ; Ac 2:38 ; 20:21 ).

True Security Genuine believers continue in the faith and good works throughout their lives. One basis for this conclusion is Jesus’ parable of the sower ( Mt 13:3-23 ; Mk 4:3-20 ; Lk 8:4-15 ). Only the fourth soil type bears fruit even though the second and third types show life (belief) for a short while. The fourth soil symbolizes a genuine believer. The bearing of fruit (continuing in the faith and good works) is also the evidence of genuine belief named in John 15 , where Jesus said only the branch that bears fruit is saved (v v. 5-6).

The Source of Security Believers do not continue in the faith by their own strength. Rather, each member of the Trinity works to preserve them. In the first place our salvation completely _____________ on Jesus’ work, not on our merit (cp. Rm 3:21-26 ; 4:5-8 ; 8:1 ; Eph 2:8-9 ). Romans 8:30 is to the point: “And those He predestined, He also called; and those He called, He also justified; and those He justified, He also glorified.” So sure is our salvation that Paul speaks of our future glorification in the past tense!

Believers also continue in the faith because they are sealed with the Holy Spirit as a down payment ( Eph 1:13-14 ) of the blessings promised by God, including eternal life. Paul had this in mind when he said: “And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were ______________ by Him for the day of redemption” ( Eph 4:30 ). God the Spirit assures us of salvation at the beginning of our spiritual life and keeps us in the faith to the end of our earthly life ( Jn 10:27 ; Rm 8:16 ; 1Jn 2:20 , 27 ; Jd 24 ). {Commentator by Daniel B Wallace}

1:15-16. For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God's people, [16] I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

Although Paul may not have known these believers personally, it is possible he may have heard of their _______ in the Lord Jesus and the ___________ they have for each other from Epaphras, just as the brethren in Colossae. Whatever the relationship he had with these believers, whenever he thought about them it caused him to pray for them. His prayers were continuous and intense characterized by thanksgiving.

His prayer requests. For the believers to know that God has called them to a great __________. V18. He

emphasized the origin of their calling and urged them to take part in it. That they my know the _______________ and extent of their blessings n Christ. V18. He had

already describe the blessings they had in Christ as an inheritance.V14. That they are an inheritance emphasizes the fact that they are received as a gift and already Guaranteed even though they are not yet fully bestowed upon believers.

That they may _________________ and experience the power of God. V19. God’s power is unlimited. He wanted to convey to them that God is at work in the life of every believer in a powerful way.

1:17-18. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. [18] I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

His prayer was address to God in His relationship to our Lord Jesus Christ, as in 1:3. He father described him as the “father of Glory” meaning the glorious father.

In this prayer, three objects of knowledge can be clearly seen. He introduced the content of each request with the words “what is” or “what are”.

1:19-19. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, [19] and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength.

1:20-23. He exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, [21] far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. [22] And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, [23] which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

The mention of God’s great power in v19, led the apostle to expound upon the great demonstration of that power. “The R_____________________”. As a result of his resurrection, Jesus is now enthroned at the right hand of the father. This is a position of the highest honor and authority. The father has put all authority in existence at his feet. Christ is now the head of all things.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, [10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

The word “c_____________” is mentioned for the first time in V22. It is where we see Christ is the head of the church. Not only is Christ the church”s guide and authority, but the apostle also explained the that Christ and his church exist in an organic unity. As he closes this chapter, he reminds the church that it is the “body “of Christ. He said “his body the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Chapter Two

In the first section of this chapter, Paul describes the ___________ of Christ in the lives of Gd’s people. Verses 1-10 are one long long sentence in the original Greek text bringing together all of paul’s teachings about grace, faith, and the Christian life.

Paul reminded the saints that they were not always _________. As they look at their former lives, they would realized that they were living dead. The tense in the Greek verb for “used to live” summarizes one’s past life as a point. The sum of their past spiritual experience was “_____________”

1:1-2. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, [2] in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

He outlined several characteristics of the past walk of all believers.

1. They were dead in their transgressions and their sins.

“Transgressions” and “sins” are close synonyms, but with different backgrounds. Transgressions:-indicates ____________ steps taken or a deliberate _____________ of the Law. “Sins” means to “________” the mark”

The act of passing over, or beyond any law or rule of moral duty, the violation of a law or known principle of rectitude, breach of command.

Paul use these two words together for emphasis be repetition. The sins he speaks of here are not mere isolated acts; they speak of the way of life or a pattern of _____________ in which these believers once lived.

2. They followed the way of the world.

They were powerful factors that influence the way people lived. First, he mentioned the “ways of this __________”, which describe the present world order and it’s present course. The pressures of society and culture lead them away from God, just as it is today.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. [16] For everything in the world---the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life---

comes not from the Father but from the world. [17] The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. 1John 2:15-17

Jesus explained the parable to his disciples. The farmer sows the word. [15] Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. [16] Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. [17] But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. [18] Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; [19] but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. [20] Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop---some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” Mark.4:14-20

3. They were disobedient.There are spiritual forces of evil in operation in this world, that generates a spirit of __________________ in not only children but also in adults. He is the Devil himself, he is called the “prince of the power of the air”.“Air” refers to the spiritual atmosphere, where the enemy operates from.

The “disobedient” the apostle talked about includes _______________ who is not a part of the kingdom of light. Simply because one is born, they are born in the atmosphere of disobedience. The psalmist declared Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. (Psalm 51:5)

This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:22-23

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; [11] there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. [12] All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” [13] “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” [14] “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” [15] “Their feet are swift to shed blood; [16] ruin and misery mark their ways, [17] and the way of peace they do not know.” [18] “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Romans 3:10-18

4. They gratified the desires of the sinful nature.These desires originate in our lower sinful ___________. Paul emphasized that this sinful nature involves both the physical body and the mind. “Desires and thoughts”. Throughout this passage, he stresses that we all once lived this way, “we were by nature _____________ of wrath” and this includes everybody Jews and Gentiles alike.

Here we see him describing the condition of human nature. All people are controlled by their own _____________ desires and are cut off from the life of God and as a result of this, apart from Christ, mankind are without life, without freedom and without hope.

2:4-7. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, [5] made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions---it is by grace you have been saved. [6] And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, [7] in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Here we see God’s ___________________ into our hopelessness, our sinful condition. If it was left to mankind, there would only be God’s wrath that await us in the end. But God is not a God of wrath only, but a God of mercy. He s “rich in mercy” and His mercy is rooted in His great Love for us.

God showed His ___________ by what He has done for us “In Christ”. We were brought to life from a state of death. Then He raised us into His presence and be seated in Heavenly places.

2:5. “He made us alive with Christ”. Christ gave us new life through the resurrection. The word translated “made us alive” is a synonym for “____________”, but it can also mean “ to keep alive” or “to preserve life” through Christ. Believers are quickened and granted a new spiritual life.

2:6; “He seated us with Him” we are seated together with Christ in the Heavenly realms. Although have yet to physically resurrected and seated in the Heavenlies, spiritually speaking, it has already been ________________.

By God’s grace, He grants new life to believers. The basis for this new life is God’s great ________ and His mercy. We have been reunited with Christ in His resurrected life, formally apart from Christ, we were dead, enslaved and were objects of wrath, but in Christ we are now alive, enthroned and are objects of God’s grace. 2:8-9: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith---and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--- [9] not by works, so that no one can boast.

Paul focus on three theme in these verses. Grace: this word occurs _____________ times In this letter. In Paul’s time, it carries the

meaning of “pleasantness, favor or gratitude. People used this word to describe the utter generosity that God gives to sinners even though they don’t deserve it. This grace is not only forgiveness of sins, but also the ________ of God’s power in the lives of believers which brings about a new kind of life.

Salvation: Paul used the term “saved” in these verses to refer to the various aspects of redemption. Whenever the apostle speak of salvation, he would refer to justification, reconciliation, or ________________. The word saved is a general term that includes all those various concepts, and it was probably ore understandable to Gentiles.

Faith: this is one of Paul’s favorite words. It means far more than simply agreeing with an idea. It refers to. A total ________________ to letting God give the benefits of salvation and to obeying the will of God. This does not mean it is something we do by our own ability, rather, Faith is our willingness to let God into our lives, which includes fully trusting and fully commitment.

2:10. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

God saved us for a _______________, for we are His workmanship. The term “workmanship” can also be translated “handiwork”. We are a work of art God is in the process of designing. We are under construction. Someone said, “please be patient with me God is not finish with me yet”

This creative process God is carrying out takes place in Christ. We are been made anew for good works. for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Phil.2:13

We are not only been saved from negative and destructive _________________, but we are been saved to do good works. This has been God’s plan from the very beginning. The apostle using the phrase “that we should walk in them” 2:11:12. Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)--- [12] remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

This word “therefore”, signals a transition in the apostle’s writing. He had been discussing the blessings God gave to believers with the emphasis on what believers as individuals had received in Christ. He reminded the Gentile believers that they were not part of God’s people, but “in Christ” they were included.

He explained that those who were separated from the covenant were now ________________. Those who were once alienated were now reconciled, and those who were far off were brought near. He said they were “without God” (Greek atheos) the word atheist comes from that word.

2:13-18. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. [14] For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, [15] by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, [16] and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. [17] He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. [18] For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Apart from Christ, anyone who was not a Jew was _______________, but now in Christ, Gentiles and Jews are reconciled to God and to one another. The enmity, the barrier that has existed for hundred of years has been removed. This is the meaning of the word reconciliation- to bring _________________. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” [8] (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. ) [10] Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:7-10

2:19-22. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household, [20] built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. [21] In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. [22] And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Only in response to the cross of Christ does __________ exists vertically between man and God, and between mankind to mankind. This is “faith” (2:8). Paul pictured the church as a nation. He used the words “Fellow citizens” also as a “family –“________________” also as a “building”. This building is been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief corner stone. V20. The purpose of the church is to become a “dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit” .22.

In this chapter, we see where those who were separated form the covenant have been untied, those who were alienated have been reconciled, and those who were far have been brought near. Jews and Gentiles are no longer strangers, but they are called in one hope as one people of God. S/N.

Chapter Three

3:1-3. For this reason, I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles--- [2] Surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you, [3] that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.

3:1. Paul was not saying that he was in prison in Rome because of the gospel, (although he was incarcerated for the gospel), but he said he was the “_______________ of Christ Jesus”. Which clearly state that his entire life now belongs to the Lord. In his letter to the Galatians he quotes, I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

3:1b. He became a prisoner of the gospel for the ___________________. God spoke to Ananias concerning the Paul’s _______________ in this world. the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” Acts 9:15-16.

He also testified later, “When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance and saw the Lord speaking to me. 'Quick!' he said. 'Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.' “‘Lord,' I replied, 'these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' “Then the Lord said to me, 'Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” Acts 22:17-21.

He had informed them of him being ______________ to be the minister to the Gentiles, (3:3), but still there was a possibility that they had not received the letter containing the information, and he goes, therefore, into another statement on the subject, that they might fully comprehend it.

V2. Surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you,

By the administration of the grace of God we may understand, either the apostolic office and gifts granted to the apostle, for the purpose of preaching the Gospel among the Gentiles, or the ___________________ which God gave him of that gracious and Divine plan which he had formed for the conversion of the Gentiles.

On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised. [8] For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles. Galatians 2:7-8.

His testimony before king Agrippa. About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. [14] We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute

me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.' [15] “Then I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?' “‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' the Lord replied. [16] 'Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. [17] I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them [18] to open their _________ and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive ____________________ of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.' V3. that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.

He shared with them that what he was doing was not his own opinion, or some teaching he received from some school of theology, but this _______________________ came from the one who called him, even as he mentioned in chapter 1:9-12.

3:4-6. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, [5] which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Here the apostle is attempting to bring them to an _________________________ into the mystery of Christ. The mystery of Christ is that through the gospel reconciliation was now possible. Mankind can now have _________________ to his creator through Christ, also reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles through the power of the gospel.

He mentioned this in the previous chapter, he said, but now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. [14] For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, [15] by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, [16] and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. [17] He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. [18] For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Ephesians 2:13-18.

3:7. I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power.

Paul seem to change his tone in his method of approach. Observed, he did not continue to address himself as a “prisoner of Christ” as he did in verse one, but now he called himself a “___________________ of this gospel”. The word “servant”, is more in line with the word “__________________”, a servant acting under and by the direction of the great Master, Jesus Christ; from whom, by an especial call and revelation,

3:8. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, [9] and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.

He even refused to address himself as an _________________, but saw himself as one who was not worthy to be given that title. He knew how he prosecuted God’s people, believing he was doing God’s will. He also testified “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. [4] I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, [5] as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. Acts 22:3-5

3:9. to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.

The apostle was not being arrogant in speaking like this. The revelation he received from God ____________ him to write like this, for he could not have known this outside God revealing it to him. Some things are hidden from man, until God choose to ______________ their understanding.

Once Jesus questioned his disciples about his identity. He asked, “who do you say that I am”? Simon Peter answered, “you are the Christ, the son of the living God. Jesus replied “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not __________________ to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. Matt.16:15-17.

The __________________ things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. Deuteronomy 29:29.

Christ coming into the world provided mankind an opportunity to _____________________ divine revelation concerning His will, but when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4L4-5

3:10-11. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Devil thought that all hope for mankind to be restored to God was gone when Jesus died, but he did not recognize this was just the birth of another group of people called the _____________. The rise of this group of people would be a force that he would have to contend with and he would not be able to ______________ them easily. Luke 10:17.

The church, the bride of Christ, the blood wash ones, are positioned to challenged the rulers and authorities with the authority __________________ to it by the Lord himself. The kingdom of darkness and it ruler would no longer be in control over humanity, because through the church, that which was hidden has now been revealed for the purpose of making the wisdom of God known.

Manifold wisdom of God: -” means God is not locked into one particular way of working, he chooses a variety of ways and pattern that at times _______________ man and the Devil. He said through the prophet Isaiah “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. [9] “As the heavens are

higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah. 55:8-9

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in _______________ ways, [2] but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. Hebrews 1:1-2.

Rulers and authorities: - These are those _______________ who had control or rulership over mankind, and they exist not on earth, but they operate in the Heavenlies, or the Heavenly Realms. These are territorial spirits that rule over certain territories. Satan is not Omni-present, he is limited to only one place at one time, therefore, he has these spirits like generals who rule over certain regions and they control the economy, education, governments, medical science, security, etc. they have control over everything. God is expecting the church to __________________ these forces and to bring His kingdom here on earth, meaning Hs rulership back into the lives of mankind. This is only possible through Christ and what he accomplished for man.

3:12: In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.Man now has the freedom of approaching God anytime he so desires. He no longer need to wait for the high priest to go into the most holy place once per year with the blood of some animal, which was for his sins and the sins of the people. (Heb. 9:6-9)

Confidence: The feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or some thing.

The writer to the Hebrews wrote. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16

The father is so concern about the problems facing mankind, that He gave man this special invitation to approach Him anytime. “Come to me, all you who are ______________ and _______________, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Mathew 11:28-30

3:13. I ask you, therefore, not to be __________________ because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

Some of the believers perhaps had started to experience some form of discouragement over the situation the the apostle was facing. There are times when the faith of others could be challenged when they see some of the trials their leader faces. They may not be discouraged because of the trials, but the discouragement could come from how their leader handle those trails.

The scripture teaches Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7.

There are various reasons why believers face various __________, but all of them served one purpose as James wrote. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. [4] Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4 3:13-19. For this reason, I kneel before the Father, [15] from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. [16] I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, [17] so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, [18] may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, [19] and to know this love that surpasses knowledge---that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

The apostle seems to continue his _____________ for these believers from where he left off in chapter one. Verse 15-23. In Chapter one, he asked for the father to give them the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation for them to get to know God and the hope he had for them, but chapter three, his prayer seem to take one a different shape.

He had five petitions:

Inner Strength; that God may work in them and through them. Faith: That Christ may _________ in their hearts Love: That they may exercise a new orientation towards

others Spiritual Understanding: That they may grasp the divine signs of God’s love. The fullness of God: That they may personally and fully _____________

God’s power

1. Inner Strength: v.16. The “inner being” is the ____________ of a person’s life, this is where the real strength of a person’s life comes from, and their strength comes from God.

2. That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” The strength God gives is Himself, which Paul explains with his request “that Christ may dwell in your hearts trough faith.

3. New Orientation toward others. V17. With a new inner ___________ and the presence of Christ dwelling within, the believer has new orientation towards others. Love is the foundation of the believer’s life, and so he requested in this _____________ that his readers be rooted and established in love.

4. Spiritual understanding. V18. He wanted his readers to comprehend the dimensions of Christ love. His request was that they may may have the power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. The word for “__________” is a compound word that conveys the sense of being “thoroughly strong” or able to grasp Christ’s love.

5. To be filled with the fullness of God. V19.this is God’s ultimate purpose for the lives of His people. He further explains that the love of Christ surpasses knowledge. God’s love is beyond human understanding.

3:20-21.  Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21  to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Paul closed this prayer with a doxology. He praised the God who is able to do far more than one could even ask or imagine according to the standard of His power. No man or Angel would have ever thought that Jews and Gentiles would function together in one body. (3:10). Paul was confident that with the power of God’s love in the life of every believer, it was possible that both can function with each other.

He the ascribed to God glory which is to be manifest in the church, where the __________ of love will occur, and in which Christ Jesus who made the union of Jewish and Gentile believers possible.

Chapter Four

4:1-6. As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. [2] Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. [3] Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. [4] There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism; [6] one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

4:1a. Prisoner for the Lord vs Prisoner of the Lord. 3:1. In one sense, he claims he is the “prisoner for”, which means he is a “______________________”, while being a “prisoner of” means one is incarcerated.

Urge:- is rendered "stirred up." In Acts 13:43, "to persuade," is rendered "urged,"

Worthy:- This word means “equal ____________” he is saying that their calling and conduct should be balance. The “calling” not only has reference to “salvation”, but also to their union toward the body of believers, therefore, the believers conduct concern both their personal life and their responsibility toward others especially in the faith.

4:2-3. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. [3] Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

He lists three virtues that are to enhance the believers life.

1. Humility: - within the Greek culture, humility was thought of as a ______, to be practice only by slaves. But the apostle exhorts that believers should be completely humble in their daily walk. This virtue is listed first perhaps because the apostle recognizes the danger of pride. Pride promotes false humility and disunity. Humility promotes Unity. Christ is the supreme example of humility. Phil. 2:6-8.

2. Gentle:- (Meek) This is the opposite of self assertion, rudeness and harshness. It suggests having one’s _____________ under control, but it does not suggest “weakness”. It has reference to one who is angry all the time, and one who is never angry. The one who is control by the Holy Spirit is angry at the right time, but never gets angry at the wrong time. Moses is an example of one who is gentle. Numbers 23:3, Exodus 32.

3. Patience:- (hupomone) "an abiding _______" (hupo, "under," meno, "to abide"), is almost invariably rendered "patience." "Patience, which grows only in trial,  James 1:3. This is the spirit that never gives up. It endures to the very end even in times of adversity.

Attitudes such as humility, gentleness and patience foster __________ among believers. Having stated these three virtues, he then stated the manner in which they are to be carried out in one’s conduct. “Bearing with one another in love” and making every effort, means “make every diligent effort” to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Believers are encouraged to “make every effort”. Sometimes this means going beyond the ______________ zone, it calls for sacrifice, doing what is not the norm.

The believers had been brought up quite differently, and there might be frequent causes of altercation, the Jews, though converted, might have been envious that the Gentiles were admitted to the same glorious _________________ with them, without being initiated into them by bearing the yoke and burden of the Mosaic law. The apostle guards them against this, and shows them that they should intensely labor (for so the word implies) to promote and preserve peace and unity.

“keep” or “guard” what God made possible in creating one new man. (2:15-16). He is encouraging these believers to _____________ what they already have, don’t allow disunity to destroy it.

4:4-6. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Paul list seven elements of this unity, and they are centered on the trinity. These provide the basis for the spirit of unity that should exist among the body of believers. The goal here is ______________. Jesus even prayed for this oneness. He prayed “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17:20-21

Paul uses the human body as a metaphor of the church. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. [13] For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body---whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free---and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. [14] Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. 1Cor. 12:12-14.

4:7. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 

“Grace” This signify a particular __________, although we are all equal in respect to our calling, yet we all have different offices in the Church and in the world; and we must remember this is a free gift from Christ, according to the nature of the office, that we may be able to discharge it according to his own will.

4:8-10. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.” [9] (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? [10] He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)

Paul is making a reference to what David wrote in the psalms. “When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious---that you, Lord God, might dwell there”. Psalm 68:18.

He that descended - And he who descended so low is the same who has ascended so high. He came to the lower parts of the earth - the very deepest abasement; having emptied himself; taken upon him; the form of a servant, and humbled himself unto death, even the death of the cross; now he is ascended far above all heavens - higher than all height; he has a name above every name. Phil.2.6-11.

Here his descending into the lower parts of the earth is put in opposition to his ascending far above all heavens.

That he might fill the whole universe- That he might be the _______________ whence all blessings might flow; dispensing all good things to all his creatures, according to their several capacities and necessities; and, particularly, fill both Jews and Gentiles (the Church) with all the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit.

4:11- 13. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, [12] to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.

Christ, who is the _________of the body chooses who he decides to give the gifts to. One may pray for a special gift, but it is Christ who give it. “for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable”. Romans 11:29

As Christ created these offices within the Church, he is the one who also selects the officers for these offices. The writer to the Hebrews said “no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. Heb.5:4.

For the work of the ministry - These same officers and gifts are still necessary for the church today, and God expect them to be operating, for without them operating, the church will not be able to reach its full potential. In some Churches, only one of these offices may be operating, and that may be with the pastor, by which he uses to preach.

The office of the apostle, the prophet, the evangelist, the pastor, and the teacher, are at times compound in the class preachers; and many, to whom God has given only the gift of exhortation, some churches even believe that some of these ___________ are no longer in operation, but God is still the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Heb.13:8.

Edifying of the body - The _______ of Christ is his Church, see Ephesians 2:20, etc.; and its edification consists in its thorough instruction in Divine things, and its being filled with faith and holiness.

4:13. Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

The apostle had a vivid imagination as to why God place these gifts in the body, they were not __________ for people to make a name for themselves, but God knows that without them in operation within the church, the body will not reach its full potential.

He lists the four areas that needs the support of these gifts.

1. Unity in the _______. 4:3. Ephesians 4:4-6.There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called ; [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism; [6] one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Infants are ______________t, weak, and unsteady, tossed about in the nurse's arms, or whirled round in the giddy sports or mazes of youth; this seems to be the apostle's allusion. Being tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, refers to some kind of ancient play. There are some who have been saved for a long time, but as the scripture teaches, they are ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of truth, 2Tim.3:7.

By the sleight of men – (Sleight): -A clever or skillful trick or ______________; an artifice or stratagem)

These words refer to the arts used by gamesters, who employ false dice that will always throw up one kind of number, which is that by which those who play with them cannot win.

Cunning craftiness - "By cunning, for the purpose of using the various means of deception." It signifies craft and subtlety in general, _____________ and imposition: from which we have our term method, signifies a wile, a particular sleight, mode of tricking and deceiving; it is applied to the arts which the devil uses to deceive and destroy souls; see Ephesians 6:11, called there the Wiles of the devil.

4:15. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

This text shows that there are some who uses the scriptures for their own benefit, as the apostle mentioned to the church in Philippi. It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. [16] The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. [17] The former preaches Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. [18] But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.  Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, Phil. 1:15-18.

There are two major problems when men exploit the truth. (1) People lose ________________ in the church (2) they make it difficult for others to get saved.

4:16. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Here he is using the example of human body as the church that is formed by the union of all the members to each other, under one head, and by the fitness of each member for its own office and place in the body, so the Church is formed by the ___________ of its members under Christ, the head.

As the human body increases until it arrives at maturity by the energy of every part in performing its proper function, and by the sympathy of every part with the whole, so the body or Church of Christ grows to maturity by the proper exercise of the gifts and graces of individuals for the benefit of the whole body."

Instructions for Living

4:17-19 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. [18] They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life  of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. [19] Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

The Gentiles lived a lifestyle in the vanity and foolishness of their mind, and it was through this that the Gentiles became addicted to every kind of ______________; and they fondly imagined that they could obtain help from gods on which they trusted from the work of their own hands! Many of us were enslaved by these same practices until the Lord delivered us.

Having the understanding darkened - This is the second instance alleged by the apostle of the degradation of the Gentiles. Having no means of knowledge, the heart, naturally dark, became more and more so by means of ______________ transgression; everything in the Gentile system having an immediate tendency to blind the eyes and darken the whole soul.

Being alienated from the life of God - The original design of God was to live in man; and the life of God in the soul of man was that by which God intended to make man happy, and without which true happiness was never found by any human spirit: from this through the ignorance that was in them, through the substantial or continually existing ignorance, which there was nothing to instruct, nothing to enlighten;

Blindness of their heart - Because of the callousness of their hearts. Callous signifies a thickening of the outward skin of any particular part, especially on the hands and feet, by repeated exercise or use, through which such parts are rendered insensible. This may be metaphorically applied to the conscience of a sinner, which is rendered stupid and insensible by _________________acts of iniquity.

Who being past feeling - signifies to throw off all sense of shame, and to be utterly devoid of pain, for committing unrighteous acts. To be desperate, having neither hope nor desire of reformation; in a word, to be without remorse, and to be utterly regardless of conduct, character, or final blessedness.

Have given themselves over unto lasciviousness - The Gentiles in question are represented as having delivered themselves over to her jurisdiction. This is a true picture of the Gentile world: uncleanness, lechery, and debauchery of every kind, flourished among them without limit or restraint.

4:20-24. That, however, is not the way of life you learned  21 when you heard about Christ and were

taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.  22  You were taught, with regard to your

former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;  23  to be

made new in the attitude of your minds;  24  and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true

righteousness and holiness.

Here the apostle reminds these brethren that they need to be _____________________ about leaving the

old way of life that they once lived, and embraced the new kind of learning they have received from the

truth that is in Christ Jesus.

The former way of life was corrupted and abominable. He said they lived in pursuit of pleasure and

happiness, they sought this in gratification of the lusts of the flesh, and were deceived by these lusts and

disappointed in their experience.

The old mode of living was to be _________________, and the new one is to be embraced. The mind is to be renovated, and not only in its general complexion, but the very spirit of it; all it faculties and powers must be thoroughly, completely, and universally renewed.

Put on the new man. He encourages them to get a new nature in Christ Jesus. They must be renewed in the spirit of their mind. The new man which is created in __________________ and true holiness, which means in the holiness of truth.

4:25-28. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully  to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.  26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,  27 and do not give the devil a foothold.  28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands,  that they may have something to share with those in need.

Put off falsehood: - all falsity, all prevarication, because this is the total opposite to the truth that is in Christ Jesus, and to the holiness of truth.

Speak truthfully to your neighbor: - in their culture, lying was a way of life for them, therefore, having these converted gentiles they had need of these directions to help them understand what is ________________ of them as believers. He instructed them to put away lying and speak the truth. He encourages them not to allow lying to come near them, but let the truth always ever be present. And especially since we are members of one body.

Consider yourselves as members of one body: - in the body which is the church, and the head of the body is Christ. Just as the human body, the hand would not try to deceive the foot. They must deal honestly with each other, and so must believers function with each other.

In your anger do not sin: - perhaps in one sense he was saying, “take heed that you do not get angry, lest you sin” sometimes this is very difficult to do, to be angry and not sin. We can sin in a __________________ of ways, in thought, word or deed, and because people don’t general say what they are thinking, it is possible that one can sin even without speaking or acting.

If we consider anger as implying displeasure, there are a multitude of cases in which a man may be innocently get angry, for example, he could be angry with everything that displeases God. I do not believe the apostle was referring to this type of anger.

Anger just does not happen to people, but before one is angry, there must be a beginning. A person first is disappointed and that disappointment produces hurt, hurt produces resentment, and resentment produces un-forgiveness, and un-forgiveness produces bitterness, and bitterness produces anger, anger produces rage and rage produce wrath, and wrath, produces mental unbalance.

The old saying is so true, “To dwell above with the saints we knew, oh that will be glory, but to live below with the saints we know, that’s another story”. As true as this statement may be, yet we are called walk in _________, and the love must be sincere. Romans 12:9.

Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry: - means do not go to bed with any unkind or unbrotherly feeling; anger, continued in, malice or desire for revenge. Going to bed in this manner gives the enemy an opportunity to gain a _____________ upon us, also, should the Lord call the person home that night, you would miss an opportunity to settle the account and required by the Lord. Matthew 5:25.

Do not give the devil a foothold: - we must be reminded of the words of the apostle Peter, who reminded believers to “Be alert and self-control or sober mind, your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings” 1Peter 5:8-9.

The enemy will always try to _________________ the mind and irritate your spirit, you need to always be on the watch and pray that he may got get the opportunity to get the victory over you.

This caution also signifies giving yourself to one who is a tale-bearer, whisperer, or backbiter. ( 1Tim.3:11; 2Tim. 3:3; Titus 2:3) here it has the same signification. Do not open your ear to one who is a tale-bearer, or to a slanderer, one who comes to you with an accusation against your brother or sister, and especially with evil ___________________.

This is nothing but the enemy way of inciting anger inside you, therefore, the apostle is saying to give them no place in your life.

4:28. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

It was supposed that stealing was a common practice among them, as long as a portion of what was stolen was given to the poor. Paul is teaching them that this practice was wrong. He taught them that no one should under _______________ pretense defraud another person to help the unfortunate, but he encourages them to labor working with their own hands to provide that which is good and that they may have enough to give to the needy.

4:29. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Useless, unsavory, obscene word in conversation, impure, reproachful, whatever has the tendency to injure the name, fame or interest of another. It appears to mean any word or thing obscene, anything that injures virtue, countenances, vice, or scoff at a religious belief.

 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt,  so that you may know how to answer everyone. Col.4:6.

Our speech should always be used for the purpose of edifying, suitable for, fit and proper, that it may minister grace to the hearer.

4:30. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander and every kind of malice are some of the ways the Holy Spirit can be grieved, and Paul is warning us to get rid of them. These are all traits of the sinful nature. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,  impurity and debauchery;  20  idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions  21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal. 5:19-21.

The Holy Spirit in the believer’s life is God’s ______________ upon him that he is God’s property, and is called to God’s service, he is no longer an agent of the devil, therefore, the believer must remember whose he is, and that he is not his own, neither is he permitted to commit spiritual; adultery.

4:32: Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

This refers to a study of good breeding and _____________ of manners. A believer cannot be a savage, and he surely cannot be a bully, we should never put anyone through needless pain. We must be compassionate, having our bowels easily moved to help the weak. Always be quick to forgive upon the person ____________________ to repent and acknowledge their wrong.

The words of our Lord in his teaching of the Beatitudes, he said “forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.Matt.6:12,14-15

 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. Matthew 18:21-22.

Chapter Five

5:1-2: Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children [2] and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Let your whole _________________ be like that of your Lord; imitate him in all your actions, words, spirit, and inclinations; imitate him as children do their beloved parents, and remember that you stand in the relation of beloved children to him.

It is natural for children to _________________ their parents; it is their constant aim to learn of them, and to copy them in all things; whatever they see the parent do, whatever they hear him speak, that they endeavor to copy and imitate; yea, they go farther, they insensibly copy the very tempers of their parents. If you consider yourselves to be children of God, then show your love to your heavenly Father, and imitate all his moral perfections, and acquire the mind that was in Jesus.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. [2] Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. [3] For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3

We must let every act of life be dictated by _________ for God and for one another. Paul said to the church in Colossae. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, [4] because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God's people--- [5] the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have  already heard in the true message of the gospel. Col. 1:3-5

5:3-5. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. [4] Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. [5] For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person---such a person is an idolater---has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Sexual Immorality: - This was a “common” practice among the pagans then as it is today, and one into which they were in special danger of falling into at some time. Paul began to describe to the church in Galatia the sins of the ___________, and it is amazing that he lists sexual immorality at the top of list. This has been the cause of many mighty men of God downfall. His warning bears everyone to pay attention.

Impurity: - Anything base or ________ in words or acts.

Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. [29] They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, [30] slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; [31] they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. [32] Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:28-32.

Unrighteousness - This word denotes i_________________, or iniquity in general.

Fornication - This was a common and universal ________ among the ancients, as it is today. The word denotes all illicit sexual intercourse. That this was a common practice among the ancient pagan people, it would be easy to show, were it proper, even in relation to their wisest and most learned men.

Wickedness - The word denotes a desire of _____________ others; or, as we should express it, malice. It is that depravity of mind which strives to produce injury on others.

Covetousness – This is a desire of __________________ what belongs to others. This vice is common in our society; but it would be particularly so where the other vices enumerated here abounded, and people were desirous of luxury, and the gratification of their senses.

Licentiousness - This word denotes __________ in general; rather the act of doing wrong than the desire which was expressed before by the word “wickedness.”

Full of envy - “Pain, uneasiness, mortification, or discontent, excited by another prosperity, accompanied with some degree of ___________or malignity, and often with a desire or an effort to depreciate the person, and with pleasure in seeing him depressed” (Webster). This passion is so common still, that it is not necessary to attempt to prove that it was common among the ancients.

It seems to be natural to the human _____________. It is one of the most common manifestations of wickedness and shows clearly the deep depravity of man. Benevolence rejoices at the happiness of others and seeks to promote it. But envy exists almost everywhere, and in almost every human heart:

“All human virtue, to its latest breath, finds envy never conquered but by __________.” [Pope].

Murder - “The taking of human life with premeditated _____________ by a person of a sane mind.” This is necessary to constitute murder now, but the word used here denotes all manslaughter, or taking human life, except what occurs as the punishment of crime.

Debate - Our word debate does not commonly imply evil. It denotes commonly discussion for elucidating truth; or for maintaining a proposition, as the debates in Parliament, etc. But the word in the original meant also __________________, strife, altercation, connected with ____________ and heated zeal; Romans 13:13; 1 Corinthians 1:11; 1 Corinthians 3:3; 2 Corinthians 12:20; Galatians 5:20; Philemon 1:15; 1 Timothy 6:4; Titus 3:9. This contention and strife would, of course, follow from malice and covetousness, etc.

Deceit - This denotes _____________, falsehood, etc. That this was common is also plain. The Cretans are testified by one of the Greek poets to have been always liars. Titus 1:12.

Malignity - This word signifies here, not malignity in general, but that particular species of it which consists in ____________________ the words or actions of others or putting the worst construction on their conduct.

Whisperers - Those who secretly, and in a sly manner, by hints and detract from others, or excite suspicion of them. It does not mean those who openly calumniate, but that more dangerous class who

give __________ of evil in others, who affect great knowledge, and communicate the evil report under an injunction of secrecy, knowing that it will be divulged. This class of people abounds everywhere, and there is scarcely any one more dangerous to the peace or happiness of society.

5:6-7. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore, do not be partners with them.

His warning could not come a better time, especially in a time when social media seem to dominate our society. The enemy will used whatever he can find to ____________ the believer, whether in entrainment, music, false preachers, gospel singers, he will use the areas that we are most vulnerable in to deceive us.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.  Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:23-27

My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. Proverbs 1:10.

5:8-13. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light [9] (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) [10] and find out what pleases the Lord. [11] Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. [12] It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. [13] But everything exposed by the light becomes visible---and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

The meaning here is, that they were themselves formerly sunk in the same _______________ and practiced the same abominations. Therefore, no one should think they are better than others.

But now are you light in the Lord - While they were in darkness, they served divers lusts and pleasures, but now they have the light - the wisdom and teaching which come from God; therefore, walk as children of the light - let the world see that they are no longer _________ to the flesh, but free, willing, rational servants of the highest.

Fruit of the light:The fruit of the light, is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth.

Goodness refers to the ______________ and disposition; Righteousness refers to the exercise of that goodness in the whole _______________ of life; Truth, refers to the director of that principle, and its exercise, to the glorification of God and the

As we commit to walk in the light, allowing the fruit of the light to guide us, we will become knowledgeable about the things that pleases God.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God---this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is---his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2.

5:14: This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

As a man who is asleep neither knows, nor does anything that can be called good or useful, so the Gentiles and all others, while without the _________________ of God, had not only no proper knowledge of vice and virtue, but they had no correct notion of who is the true God.

As the dead can perform no function of life, so the Gentiles and the unconverted were _________________ of performing anything worthy either of life or being. But though they were asleep - in a state of complete spiritual torpor, yet they might be awoke by the voice of the Gospel; and though dead to all goodness, and to every function of the spiritual life, yet, as their animal life was whole in them, and perception and reason were still left, they were capable of hearing the Gospel, and under that influence which always accompanies it when faithfully preached, they could discern its excellency, and find it to be the power of God to their salvation.

And they are addressed by the apostle as possessing this capacity; and, on their using it properly, have the promise that Christ shall enlighten them.

Be very careful, then, how you live---not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil:

Circumspectly - The word rendered “circumspectly” - means “diligently, ______________, anxiously, solicitous lest you fall into sin.” and the idea here is, that they were to take special pains to guard against the temptations around them, and to live as they ought to.

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Not as fools, but as wise - Not as the people of this world live, indulging in foolish pleasures and desires, but as those who have been taught to understand divine _____________.

5:18-20. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, [19] speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, [20] always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wine: -  All intoxication is prohibited in the Scriptures - no matter by what means it is produced. There is, in fact, but one thing that produces intoxication. It is “_______________” - the poisonous substance produced by fermentation. This substance is neither created nor changed, increased nor diminished, by distillation. It exists in the cider, the beer, and the wine, after they are fermented, and the whole process of distillation consists in driving it off by heat, and collecting it in a concentrated form, and so that it may be preserved. But distilling does not “make” it, nor change it. Alcohol is precisely the same thing in the wine that it is in the brandy after it is distilled; in the cider or the beer that it is in the whisky or the rum; and why is it right to become intoxicated on it in one form rather than in another? Since therefore there is danger of intoxication in the use of wine, as well as in the use of ardent spirits, why should we not abstain from one as well as the other? How can a man

prove that it is right for him to drink alcohol in the form of wine, and that it is wrong for me to drink it in the form of brandy or rum?

It is not for kings, Lemuel---it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. [6] Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! [7] Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. Proverbs 31:4-7.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. They have harps and lyres at their banquets, pipes and timbrels and wine, but  they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands. Isaiah. 5:11-12

Filled with the Spirit: - How important it is for believers to be influenced by the Holy Spirit, instead of indulging in wine, they need to remember that their ___________ are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and not to be a receptacle for intoxicating drinks.

So, I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Galatians 5:16-17.

Psalms: - The singing of the psalms has constituted a delightful part of public worship in all ages. They speak the language of _________________ at all times, and a large part of them are as well suited to the services of the sanctuary now as they were when first composed.

Hymns: - A “hymn” is properly a song in ____________ of God. Among the pagan it was a song in honor of some deity. With us now it denotes a short poem, composed for religious service, and sung in praise or worship to Almighty God.

Music or Melody: - Melody” is an agreeable succession of sounds; a succession so regulated and modulated as to please the ear. It differs from “harmony,” inasmuch as melody is an ____________________ succession of sounds by a single voice; harmony consists in the accordance of different sounds.

The word which he uses means to touch, twitch, pluck - as the hair, the beard; and then to twitch a string - to “twang” it - as the string of a bow, and then the string of an instrument of music. It is most frequently used in the sense of touching or playing a lyre, or a harp; and then it denotes to make music in general, to sing - perhaps usually with the idea of being accompanied with a lyre or harp.

Giving Thanks to God: - Paul is reminding them that they should always be grateful and _________________to God for who he is and what he has done. Sometime, people would request from God a special blessing, and when he bless them they forget to say thanks.

This is noted when Jesus healed the lepers.As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”  When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him---and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Luke 17:12-18.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1Thess.5:18.

Instructions for Christian Households

5:21. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. [To ___________, resign or surrender to the power, will or authority of another with the reciprocal pronoun.]

Let no man be so tenacious of his own will or his opinion in matters indifferent, as to disturb the ______________ of the Church; in all such matters give way to each other and let love rule.

5:22-31. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. [23] For the husband is  the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. [24] Now as  the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. [25] Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her [26] to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, [27] and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. [28] In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. [29] After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church--- [30] for we are members of his body. [31] “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

The husband is called to _________ his wife as Christ loves the Church. He is also responsible for headship (Eph. 5:23). He is to __________ as a loving servant. (John 13:11) Servanthood is the spirit that should be manifested in his headship (Matt. 20:26-27). The husband, in his responsibility as head of the home, is called to provide leadership in four areas:

Priest: - Spiritual __________ of the entire family, he talks to his creator and father about the family He entrusted to him. He receives the vision for the family from God. (Job 1:5)

Protector: - He has been given the responsibility to ____________ him family from intruders. God told Adam when he was in the garden of Eden, his job was to work the garden and to take care of it. The words “take care” means to protect.

Provider: - ______________ and disciplining of the children (Eph. 6:4; Titus 2:1-8). God did not give the man a wife before he first gave him a job. God expect the man to provide for his household. Selfishness cannot be a part of the man lifestyle, there are times when he will need to leave himself undone to provide for his household.

Prophet: - God always has something to say regarding the way we lead the family, and seeing we have limited knowledge regarding this responsibility, it is so important that somebody hear from Him, and He expect that person to be to head of the family, so that when he speaks, he do so on God’s behalf.

The wife is responsible for submissive _____________ (Eph.5:22-24). This creates order and strength. It is important to note that this is voluntary. Christ does not coerce and neither do godly husbands.

This requires genuine honor and ______________for the husband in his place of authority and ____________ for him in his difficult responsibility. Remember, intimacy is developed with the one to whom, with whom and for whom you pray. (Prayer Covering) This obedience will bring blessing upon all in the family.

Moreover, or therefore, on the consideration of God's design in the institution of marriage, let every one of you love his wife as himself, because she is both naturally and by a Divine ordinance a part of himself.

That she _________________ her husband - Let the wife ever consider the husband as her head, and this he is, not only by nature, but also by the ordinance of God. These are very important matters, and on them the apostle lays great stress. See the following observations.

The wife is given the God appointed task of helping and submitting to the husband. (V22-24) her responsibility toward her husband includes

Chapter Six

Chuck Swindoll The book of Ephesians hits on a wide range of moral and ethical behaviors, designed to ensure believers are living up to our heavenly calling. As we continue in our faith from day to day, month to month, and year to year, the temptation to get comfortable will always exist. However, Paul presented the gift of God in Christ and the benefits we receive so clearly that we cannot help but ask ourselves if our lives reflect that reality as they should.

The latter half of Ephesians makes clear that spiritual growth occurs primarily in community with others, iron sharpening iron (Proverbs 27:17). Your Christian “walk” (in other words, your daily life) is to be characterized by unity, holiness, love, wisdom, and perseverance in spiritual warfare.

Maturity yields benefits in believers’ moral lives, but it extends far beyond that as well. Increased maturity benefits the community at large, leading us as Christians to present a more consistent witness to the working of God in our lives as well as protecting us from the harmful divisions and quarrels that have plagued so many communities throughout history.

6:1-4. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” ---which is the first commandment with a promise--- “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Children – (tekna) This word usually signifies those who are young; but it is used here, evidently, to denote those who were under the care and government of their parents, or those who were not of age.

Obey your parents in the lord- This is the __________ responsibility God has given to children. It is, to do what their parents command them to do.

OBEY: [hupo, "under," ,akouo- to listen, attend") [to hear __________] vines dict.

God created this world in an orderly fashion, and re require order from those he allowed to occupy his creation and it begin at the home. . 1Cor.14:40.

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Colossians 3:20.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away. Proverbs 22:15 NIV

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother. Proverbs 15:20 NIV

Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. Proverbs 13:24 NIV

6:4. Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. / Fathers,[c] do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. Col.3:21

Exasperate: - Irritate intensely; infuriate;

Embitter: - caused someone to feel bitter or resentful.

It is the Fathers responsibility to __________ then children, and the mothers are called to help in this area as mentioned king Solomon. “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it”. Proverbs 22:6

Bring them up: literally, Nourish them in the ___________________ and instruction of the Lord. The young mind is to be nourished with wholesome discipline and instruction.

Discipline, may refer to all knowledge which is proper for children, including elementary principles and rules for behavior, etc.

Instruction, may imply whatever is necessary to form the mind; to touch, regulate, and purify the passions; and necessarily includes the spiritual upbringing. These should be administered by parents who are in the Lord - according to his will and word, and in reference to his eternal glory.

6:5-6. Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. [6] Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

Servants - The word used here denotes one who is ____________ to render service to another, whether that service be free or voluntary, and may denote, either a slave, or one who binds himself to render service to another.

It is often used in these senses in the New Testament, just as it is elsewhere. It cannot be demonstrated that the word here necessarily means “____________;” though it is a word which would apply to those in this condition.

On the general subject of slavery, and the Scripture teachings in regard to it; see Isaiah 58:6. Whether the persons here referred to were slaves, or were those who had bound themselves to render a voluntary servitude, the directions given here were equally appropriate. [Barnes Comm.]

The word of God was not _________________ to be used as a means which binds one person to another,but to teach all to perform their duties aright in the relations in which Christianity found them, and gradually to modify those laws as seen in the letter to Philemon.

6:7-8. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, [8] because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

He should perform his duties with ______________, and feel that he was rendering acceptable service to God. This would reconcile him to much of the hardships of his lot. The feeling that “God” has ordered the circumstances of our lives, and that he has some wise and good ends to answer by it, makes us contented there; though he may feel that his fellowman may be doing him an injustice.

6:9. And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

The object of this is, to secure proper ______________ for those servants. It is evident, from this, that these masters were also in the church, and that they were the owners of slaves. Some of these servants would be converted, and are now brothers and sisters in the Lord. He did not say that they should he excluded at once from the fellowship. He did not hold them up to reproach, or use harsh and severe language in regard to them. He taught them their duty toward those who

were under them, and laid down principles which, if followed, would lead ultimately to universal freedom.

Forbearing threatening - The Greek word means to “_________ ________;” and then, to “omit, cease from.” This is evidently the meaning here The sense is, that they were to be kind, affectionate, just. It does not mean that they were to remit punishment where it was deserved; but the object is to guard against that to which they were so much exposed in their condition - a fretful, dissatisfied temper; a disposition to govern by terror rather than by love.

Our enemies?

6:10. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

The word strength and its derivatives are mentioned over 360 times in the Bible, applying to both natural and supernatural strength. The Greek word (katei) means “power, strength, might.” Paul is telling us that the unlimited power and strength of Christ are the source of strength we will need for this battle.

Satan is the consummate form of depraved and untruthful intellect. We read of his "thoughts," his "schemes," his subtlety, deceit and impostures; of his slanders against God and man, from which, indeed, the name devil (diabolus) is given him. Falsehood and hatred are his chief qualities. Hence Jesus called him "the manslayer" and "the father of falsehood". [John 8:44]

He had considered the various relations of life which they sustained, and the obligations resulting from them. He was not unaware that in the discharge of their duties they would need strength from above. He knew that they had some great and mighty foes, and that to meet them, they needed to be clothed in the panoply of the Christian soldier.

He closes, therefore, by exhorting them to put on all the strength which they could to meet these enemies with which they had to contend; and in the commencement of his exhortation he reminds them that it was only by the strength of the Lord that they could hope for victory. To be “strong in the Lord,” is:

(1) To be strong or courageous in his cause;

(2) To know that he is our strength, (Psalm 46:1) and to rely on him and the promises he gave us. 2Cor.1:20.

He was the first sinner, and the fountain of sin. [1 John 3:8] All who do unrighteousness or hate their brethren are, so far, his offspring. [1 John 3:10] With a realm so wide, Satan might well be called not only "the prince," but very "god of this world". [2 Corinthians 4:4]

As it is in the physical, so it is in the spiritual. Physical strength comes by physical exercise, one must be discipline enough to do what his body requires for him to resist weakness. Paul speaking to Timothy said “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1Timothy 4:8

Spiritual exercise comes by doing the things that will build you spiritual mussels. Peter said “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; [6] and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; [7] and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. [8] For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. [9] But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. [10] Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble” 2 Peter 1:5-10.

Once a decision has been made to follow Jesus, the enemy of our Lord will engage you in a battle, and in order to fight in this battle, you need both physical and spiritual strength, the enemy knows our weaknesses and he also know we are vulnerable, therefore he can out wait us, he has more endurance than us because he has been around longer than us, and he has not change his method of strategy in attacking mankind. In order to defeat him, you must be strong in the Lord.

6:11-17. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Who are our enemies?

Not flesh and blood: God used the apostle to inform us that our enemies are not people, regardless of their culture, ethnicity race, etc. we are all brothers and sisters. We came from one man. Adam. Since our enemy is not physical, but spiritual, then the battles we face daily must be done spiritually.

Because the battles are being fought in the spiritual, the weapons to be used in this battle must be spiritual. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 2 Cor.10:3-4

The enemies operate in the spiritual world, but manifest themselves in objects and people in our world, causing us to believe that people are our enemies, so we hurt, abuse, lie, and destroy one another, while the real enemies are watching us and God and laughing at us.

The prophet Isaiah said Isaiah sad this regarding the enemy “Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate: “Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble, [17]

the man who made the world a wilderness, who overthrew its cities and would not let his captives go home?” Isa, 14:16-17.

Rulers / Principalities:- The can be no doubt whatever that the apostle alludes here to evil spirits. Like good angels, they were regarded as divided into ranks and orders, and were supposed to be under the control of one mighty leader; It is probable that the allusion here is to the ranks and orders which they sustained before their fall, something like which they may still retain. The word “principalities” refers to principal rulers, or chieftains.

Authorities / Those who had power, or to whom the name of “powers” was given. One commentator addresses Satan and the fallen angels as Thrones, dominations, princedoms, virtues, powers.”

Powers of this dark world / The rulers that preside over the regions of ignorance and sin with which the earth abounds, “Darkness” is an emblem of ignorance, misery, and sin; and no description could be more accurate than that of representing these malignant spirits as ruling over a dark world.

This world - dark, and wretched and ignorant, and sinful - is just such a dominion as they would choose, or as they would cause; and the degradation and woe of the pagan world are just such as foul and malignant spirits would delight in. It is a wide and a powerful empire.

It has been consolidated by ages. It is sustained by all the authority of law; by all the omnipotence of the perverted religious principle; by all the reverence for antiquity; by all the power of selfish, corrupt, and base passions. No empire has been so extended, or has continued so long, as that empire of darkness; and nothing on earth is so difficult to destroy.

1) To our own sinful propensities - which are a part of the kingdom of darkness;

(3) With the evil passions of others - their pride, ambition, and spirit of revenge - which are also a part of that kingdom;

(4) With the evil customs, laws, opinions, employments, pleasures of the world - which are also a part of that dark kingdom;

(5) With error, superstition, false doctrine - which are also a part of that kingdom; and,

(6) With the wickedness of the pagan world - the sins of benighted nations - also a part of that kingdom. Wherever we come in contact with evil - whether in our own hearts or elsewhere - there we are to make war.

As believers, the world could never be our friend, it hates God and anything that look like God, therefore, because of what we represent and stand for, we will always be at war against the systems of this world.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. [16] For everything in the world---the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life---comes not from the Father but from the world. 1 john 2:15-16.

Jesus in his prayer for his followers prayed “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. [14] I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. [15] My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. [16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. [17] Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. [18] As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. [19] For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. John 17:13-19

Spiritual forces of Evil / wicked spirits.” Literally, “The spiritual things of wickedness;” but the allusion is undoubtedly to evil spirits, and to their influences on earth.

The evil spirits are supposed to occupy the lofty regions of the air, and thence to exert a baleful influence on the affairs of man. It is against such spirits, and all their malignant influences, that Christians are called to contend. In whatever way their power is put forth - whether in the prevalence of vice and error; of superstition and magic arts; of infidelity, atheism, or antinomianism; of evil customs and laws; of pernicious fashions and opinions, or in the corruptions of our own hearts, we are to make war on all these forms of evil, and never to yield in the conflict.

Armor Of God.

a. Belt of truth:In Biblical days a loose garment would trip up a warrior or get in the way of battle. It was necessary to wear a belt or girdle to keep garments tight around the waist and legs so that warriors would be free to fight.

The truth of God’s word is the belt we should wear, in order for us not to trip up by the deception of the enemy.

 Truth must be the girdle that keeps our lives, so when the enemy brings us deception, we will not fall for his trap. (1 Peter 5:8)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32

What is Truth? John 18:35-38.Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

In order for truth to be defined properly, it would have to be a factually and logically correct statement.  In other words, it would have to be true.  But, perhaps we could look further at truth by determining what it is not.  Truth is not error.  Truth is not self-contradictory.  Truth is not

deception.  Of course, it could be true that someone is being deceptive, but the deception itself isn't truth.Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2Tim. 2:15

   b. Breastplate of Righteousness:The breastplate of the Roman soldier was to protect his heart. We should always try to remain in right standing with God and with one another.

Right standing with God, and with our brothers and sisters is the breastplate that we need to stand against the devil’s darts.

This part of the armor covers the vital organs in our bodies, i.e., the chest, heart, lungs, reproductive organs, etc. Each organ depends upon the other in order for the body to function efficiently.  Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23. The gateway to the heart are the eyes and the ears. Do not leave them unprotected.

c. Feet covered with Peace:Because the enemy would throw sharp objects on the ground in order to cripple their opponents. Roman soldiers would wear shoes with soles. The soles had to be tough if the soldiers would survive the long march.

We must have thick soles on our shoes of peace as Satan uses sharp objects of offence and rejection in an attempt to cripple us. We must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and to the sharp attacks of the enemy.  

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Romans 14:19.

d. Shield of Faith:The word “shield” is derived from the Greek word, (Thura) meaning door. The shield has the shape of a door.  It could easily protect the body of the soldier. 

Faith is a very important part of the armor, for without it we are wide expose to all of Satan arrows, and we must remember that his arrow is already in the bow aiming at us all the time.

for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; Psalm 11:2.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Eph. 6:13

We must cover every part as we are engaged in battle. The shield not only covers our physical bodies, but also our hearts, minds, finances, family and loved ones. It protects everything God has given us. 

    e. Helmet of Salvation:The helmet is used to protect our head– (the mind).  Satan wants to bring attacks of hopelessness, depression, or heaviness against our minds.

A spirit of hopelessness will cause depression and distortion to come to our minds.We need to discipline our thoughts with the word of God in order to persevere under this type of attack. (Ps. 35:9; 51:12; 118:21; 

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 1Thess.5:8.

    f. Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God):The sword is the main offensive component of the armor.The sword not only prevents Satan from wounding us, but it will drive him away.The Sword of the Spirit is sharp for penetrating every part of our being as well.Derek Prince says, “This indicates cooperation between the believer and the Holy Spirit. We must take the sword. The Holy Spirit will not do that for us.  But when we take the sword in faith, then the Holy Spirit gives us the power and the wisdom to use it.”For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-13.

Jesus used this weapon against the Devil when he was being tempted. He said “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4.

      g. Pray in the Spirit. (Eph. 6:18)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

This is understood by the apostle as “praying in tongues”. “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. (1 Cor. 14:14) We can also relate this to Acts 2:4 – “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

The sense we have is that praying in tongues is made possible by the enablement of the Holy Spirit. Therefore praying in the spirit is defined as that praying which springs from the merging of the human spirit with the Holy Spirit, issuing a prayerful utterance in an unknown tongue.  (By R.  But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 20.

The Armor was design with us in mind, so that it could fit properly, and serve the purpose for which it was made.

h. Taking your stand. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Eph.6.13

I once heard a saying that "either you take a stand for something, or you won’t stand for anything at all". This is the day when people are afraid to take a stand, especially those of us that are a part of the kingdom of God. While everyone else is taking a stand for what they believe, the church is being silence.

Prayer. (Eph.6:18)The English poet “William Cowper” wrote “The Devil trembles when the weakest saint is on his knees” The time to be serious about prayer is not while being engaged in this battle, for we must make every opportunity to be in prayer.

Worship and Praise: From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise, because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. Psalm 8:2This powerful weapon that we have, God dwell in the midst of praise! The atmosphere is free from any demonic influence thereby making it easier for us to pray. Worship and praise sends a spirit of confusion in the devil’s camp that is why the devil wants us to be silent when it comes to worship.

Every time a believer bows in prayer, there must be a consciousness of the great conflic t of which he or she is involved in. The place of prayer where believers gather is of great importance; it is possible that prayer may push us into spiritual battle with evil spirits...

Those who are being held captive by Satan need to be freed, and prayer empowers us to deliver them. Prayer does not guarantee immunity from trouble, at times it seem to invite trouble, but never-the-less, Jesus commanded us to always pray and not to give up. Luke 18:1.Prayer is the bond that cements the Christian family. We heard the phrase “the family who prays together, stays together” Prayer is appropriate on every occasion, but it is never

more urgent than in the time of crisis. Prayer causes our eyes to be opened, allowing us to have spiritual insight that the average person may not have.

6:19-20. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

The apostle recognize the responsibility that was before him as he was entrusted with the responsibility of delivering the message of hope, which is not something to be taken lightly and that the enemy will do every thing to keep that from happening, therefore he solicits the prayer of the saints.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. Romans 1:16.

His prayer request.

1. Words may be give me:- Although the apostle was well knowledgeable when it comes to the word of God, he knew he needed specific word from God to be able to meet the needs of the hearers. He was not just asking for words, but he needed revelation, words that only the creator can provide him with.

2. That he will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel. Here he calls the gospel “Mystery”. It is mysterious because the human mind just cannot comprehend how it works. His message to the church in Corinth.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. [19] For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” [20] Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? [21] For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. [22] Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, [23] but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, [24] but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. [25] For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. [26] Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. [27] But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. [28] God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things---and the things that are not---to nullify the things that are, [29] so that no one may boast before him. [30] It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God---that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 1Cor.1:18-2

He understood how pride could get into someone, to make them believe it is their ability that make the difference in the lives of others, but re requested their prayers because of how the flesh

could easily get in he way. He said “ For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1Cor. 9:16-18; 26-27

Mystery of God.

A mystery is that “which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 3:5).

The mystery of God is the consummation of God’s plan in bringing His kingdom in Christ to fulfillment.

Colossians 2:2-3.My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, [3] in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

6:21-24. Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. [22] I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you. [23] Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. [24] Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love. Tychicus was of the province of Asia, in Asia Minor, of which Ephesus was the capital; see Acts 20:4. He was well known to the church there. He also carried the letter to the Colossians Colossians 4:7, The Greeks speak of him as one of the seventy disciples, and make him bishop of Colophon, in the province of Asia.

The Epistle is closed with the usual salutations. The expression “peace to you,” was the common form of salutation in the East and is still to this very day, the “salam” or Shalom, which is being used - the word “salam” meaning “peace.”
