Hand or Glove Puppet A hand puppet is a type of puppet that is controlled by the hand or hands that occupies the interior of the puppet. Glove puppets are a variation of hand puppets. Commonly, the index finger serves as the neck while the thumb and the middle finger perform the arms of the puppet. There are many variations to a hand puppet. If the puppet does not have a movable mouth, three fingers on one hand become the neck and two arms. This type of puppet is often called a glove puppet. If the puppet has a movable mouth, traditionally the thumb serves as the lower jaw; the four fingers form the upper mouth. Sock puppet The sock puppet is a puppet formed from a sock and operated by inserting one's hand inside the sock. One then moves his hand up and down to give the impression of speaking. Sometimes eyes and other factors are added to the sock in order to make the puppet more realistic. Sock puppets are also popular in many puppet performances, as they are simple to make and easy to use. They are mostly used in satirical or children's works. Rod Puppet It is also known as the stick puppet to some other people. From the name itself, the puppet is being supported by stick(s), sometimes one for the body and two other small ones for the hands. The two small sticks are being held by one hand and the other with the remaining hand. It is very famous to the Far East. A rod puppet is manipulated with wooden or wire rods. Rod puppets can sometimes have a complete working hinged mouth but many do not. A rod puppet can have a fixed facial expression. Arms are usually a requirement as rods are attached to them. What is a Puppet?-a movable model of a person or animal that is used in entertainment and is typically moved either by strings controlled from above or by a hand inside it.

What is a Puppetry?-the art of operating puppets, typically either by strings controlled from above or by hand

A puppeteer is a person who manipulates an inanimate object, such as a puppet, in real time to create the illusion of life.

TYPES OF PUPPETSThere are 6 basic types of puppets. Here are interesting facts from each one of them.Hand or Glove PuppetA hand puppet is a type of puppet that is controlled by the hand or hands that occupies the interior of the puppet.Glove puppets are a variation of hand puppets. If the puppet has a movable mouth, traditionally the thumb serves as the lower jaw; the four fingers form the upper mouth.Sock puppet The sock puppet is a puppet formed from a sock and operated by inserting one's hand inside the sock. One then moves his hand up and down to give the impression of speaking. Sometimes eyes and other factors are added to the sock in order to make the puppet more realistic. Sock puppets are also popular in many puppet performances, as they are simple to make and easy to use. They are mostly used in satirical or children's works.Rod PuppetIt is also known as the stick puppet to some other people. From the name itself, the puppet is being supported by stick(s), sometimes one for the body and two other small ones for the hands. The two small sticks are being held by one hand and the other with the remaining hand. It is very famous to the Far East.A rod puppet is manipulated with wooden or wire rods. Rod puppets can sometimes have a complete working hinged mouth but many do not. A rod puppet can have a fixed facial expression. Arms are usually a requirement as rods are attached to them.Shadow PuppetIt is another kind of rod puppet. The name suggests how it is being used, shadow is being cast using from a cloth screen with a projector or a very bright light from behind. More importantly, the figures are commonly translucent enough for some colors to pass through the puppet. They are made from materials such as colored plastics. A shadow puppet is a cut-out figure held between a source of light and a translucent screen. Shadow puppets can form solid silhouettes or be decorated with various amounts of cut-out details. Colour can be introduced into the cut-out shapes to provide a different dimension and different effects can be achieved by moving the puppet (or light source) out of focus. Javanese shadow puppets known as Wayang Kulit are the classic example of this. Finger Puppet Small figure which fits onto a single finger of the puppeteer. The puppeteer uses each finger for every character. Most of them do not have hands and if they do, they are not moving at all. You know it’s their part when they bend their fingers on the particular character. Ventriloquist’s Dummy Usually, it is as big as a half of a regular adult. Either it’s sitting on the ventriloquist’s knee, arm, table or chair. A hand is supporting it from the back which is also the one controlling the dummy. Usually, it is a conversation between the two and it sounds like they can actually talk.

The Ventriloquist's Dummy is a puppet operated by a ventriloquist performer to focus the audience's attention from the performer's activities and heighten the illusions. They are called dummies because they do not speak on their own. The ventriloquist dummy is controlled by the one hand of the ventriloquist. Such acts aren't always performed with a traditional dummy, occasionally using other forms of puppetry. Ventriloquist a person who can speak or utter sounds so that they seem to come from somewhere else, make it seem like it’s coming from the puppet or doll he or she is holding. especially an entertainer who makes their voice appear to come from a dummy of a person or animal

Marionette It is commonly known as string-operated puppet which is like the most difficult to control. Other than puppets above, they can move around a certain stage. It looks like a doll but there are strings attached to some parts of their body which are controlled by two hands.

Carnival puppets or body puppets are usually designed to be part of a large spectacle. These are often used in parades and demonstrations, and are at least the size of a human and often much larger. One or more performers are required to move the body and limbs. In parades, the appearance and personality of the person inside is not. Relevant GIANT PUPPETS Giant puppets are massive puppets that are used for parades, theatre and more. it is at least the size of a human or often much larger and can be constructed with humans inside the puppet.  One or more performers are required to move the body and limbs.

What is Principles of Design? Principles of Design - the means by which the artist organize and integrate the visual elements into unified arrangements. The rules by which an artist organizes the Elements of Art to create a work of art. Design – any arrangement of lines, forms, textures, and colors. It involves the problem of choosing these forms and colors and then arranging them. A good design shows an orderly arrangement of the materials and, in addition, creates beauty in the finished product Selecting and arranging have two aims – order and beauty.

I. Balance as Principle of Design

Balance – refers to a way of combining art elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art. - a feeling of equality of weight, attention, or attraction of the various elements within the composition as a means of accomplishing unity.

Kinds of BalanceMost successful compositions achieve balance in several ways: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial.

A. Symmetrical or Formal Balance Symmetrical balance is when the weight is equally distributed on both sides of the central axis or the elements of art on both sides of a central vertical line appear to be about equal in shape, weight, value and color, Symmetry is the simplest and most obvious type of balance. It creates a secure, safe feeling and a sense of solidity. Symmetry can occur in any orientation as long as the image is the same on either side of the central axis. - the balancing elements are alike

B. Asymmetrical or Informal Balance A balance achieved through the use of dissimilar parts or both sides of the central axis are not identical, yet appear to leave the same visual weight. It is a "felt" equilibrium or balance between the parts of a composition rather than actual.

Asymmetrical balance is achieved with dissimilar objects on either side of the vertical axis in a work of art. Objects may be dissimilar and have the same visual weight.

- the balancing elements are dissimilar

C. Radial Balance – is a type of balance based on a circle with its design extending from its center. A star, the iris around each pupil of your eyes, a wheel with spokes, and a daisy (among many flowers and other plant forms) are examples of radial balance.

- the balancing elements are arrange in a circle
