Dear Brothers, “When peaceful silence lay over all, and night had run the half of her swift course, down from the heavens, from the royal throne, leapt your all-powerful Word; into the heart of a doomed land the stern warrior leapt” (Wisdom 18:14-15). In the joy of the Nativity our great Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ, I greet you this Christmas! We celebrate Christ who is the all-powerful Word who “leapt” into the womb of the Virgin Mary to take on our flesh with the all-important mission to save all things. We celebrate His most glorious birth and the gathering of his people into His Church under the saving reign of His “royal throne.” People around the world celebrate this when we invite all to remember why we celebrate Christmas. It is a blessing to have this publication, Voice of the Brotherhood, available to share the news with others about this wonderful Ukrainian Catholic Organization. May this publication serve to bring the Good News of Christmas to a great number of people. May Christ, who is truly Emmanuel – God with us, fill your heart and the hearts of those in your family with joy and gladness this Christmas. May these Blessings be with you and give you strength to witness for Christ in the Year of Our Lord, 2011.

UCBC National Spiritual Advisor Christmas Message

Dear Brothers in Christ:

Saint Paul mentions the word faith approximately 400 times in his epistles and he preached the necessity of faith to the people of his day. So, from this alone we can see the importance of faith and the need for the presence of Christ in our midst. Not much has changed since the time of St. Paul. We still need to have faith in today’s world and maybe even more so! We live in a very different world, never mind that of 2000 years ago or even 15, 20 or 30 years ago. Society itself has changed immensely and rapidly but the necessity of faith has remained constant. One can say that the need for faith and celebrating the birth of our Saviour is much greater now than it was in years gone by. Why? Unlike in St. Paul’s day, there are so many distractions, anxieties and emotions that plague today’s world. Mankind has increased knowledge over the centuries but it’s what we do with that knowledge that can either build a world or destroy it. Nevertheless, we must still ask ourselves, ‘Why are we here?’ We are here because of God’s love for us; we are here because Christ was born for us to redeem us and this is the greatest sign of hope and love that we can have. Yes, our lives are so very busy, yet it only takes a moment to say a prayer, it only takes a second to share a smile, it only takes a minute to share God’s love with others. That’s why we need to keep strong in the faith in today’s world and share the joyous message of the new-born Christ child with everyone! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families much health and blessings for the Christmas Season and throughout the New Year! Rev. Andrei Kachur

Christmas Greetings from the National UCBC President

Різдвяне Привітання від Президента Крайової Управи Братствo Українців Католиків Канади

Once again the time is approaching when Christians around the world will be celebrating the birth of our Lord,

Jesus Christ. His birth is one of the most important

and beautiful events in the history of the world.

During the Christmas Eve Matins service we sing “God Is With Us”. God is with us in a very real and beautiful way. Throughout the history of mankind, God has always revealed Himself in many wonderous ways. As we continue the work of the Brotherhood in our parishes and across Canada, let us remember that “God Is With Us” and the work load and burden will be lessened and more enjoyable.

During the Christmas season, people whether they are believers or non believers, feel in their hearts something different, more happiness, and more kindness. One sees and feels more good will, more sensitivity towards one another, more sharing of gifts, more visitations and more peace. May all of this continue into the new year.

May Christ whose birth we celebrate, bless you and your loved ones with peace, love, happiness and good health. May the love of the infant Jesus be in your hearts this Christmas and throughout the New Year.

I take this opportunity on behalf of my wife Lena and the National UCBC Executive, to wish you and your loved ones, our warmest wishes for a blessed, holy, joyous and happy Christmas. May the Spirit of Christmas brighten your days and continue into 2011.

Christ Is Born! Let Us Glorify Him!

Yours in Christ, Bro. Glen Tymiak, KSV National President Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada.

XXIII Triennial UCBC Congress Basilian Fathers House of Studies

Edmonton, Alberta July 2-4, 2010

Submitted by Bro. Robert Wuschenny, Eparchial President - Eparchy of Saskatoon

Moleben and Panahyda celebrated by his Grace Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, OSBM and visiting clergy at the Basilian Fathers House of Studies aptly started the 23rd Congress of the UCBC on Friday, July 2, 2010. Monastic students ably responded to the Moleben. Kenote speaker, His Grace Metropolitan Lawrence delivered a lively message on the “Clergy’s Vision of the Future and Future Role of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada” In his message, Metropolitan Lawrence compared the role of the Brotherhood over the years to the layers of civilization in the city of Rome, both with amazing changes. His Grace explained how the Brotherhood of the 1500s stemmed from the Trade Guild Movement, much different from the brotherhood of the present day. Emphasis at this time centered on the printing press which eventually replaced handwritten Liturgical books and provided a measure of uniformity. Thus, in those early years, the Brotherhood often played very practical roles, but did not overstep its bounds. In Canada, the UCBC began in 1932 in order to fulfill a particular need and over the years it evolved to what it is today. From the clergy viewpoint, Canon Law speaks to the role of the laity (UCBC) based on our baptism. As baptized people our role is to evangelize. Our baptismal hymn…all who have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ…, reminds us that, “We are clothed in the person of Christ and our purpose is to take on the salvation of humanity”. Indeed, we are called to:

1. a teaching ministry (publications, bulletins, newspapers, newsletters, web-sites) 2. a sanctifying ministry whereby we make ourselves and other holy by singing in choirs,

ushering, greeting, welcoming, producing bulletins, texts, booklets to help people be part of the services.

3. ministry of governance – being good stewards. UCBC governance should care for all; be like the Good Samaritan by providing necessities as well as organization and structure.

As well, his Grace urged the Brotherhood to look at its Constitution and to examine its past. What have we done well? Not so well? We should remember that as a laity we are responsible for the Spiritual and the material. This is not just the task of the clergy. His Grace also asked the Brotherhood to consider the next three years. “Perhaps, like jackpines,” he stated, “we need a fire to find new life.” In summary, his Grace noted that it is good to consider:

1. the long history of the UCBC (Spiritual and Theological basis) 2. decide what we are called to do 3. determine the direction to be taken

Following Opening Ceremonies on Saturday, July 3, 2010, National Spiritual Director, Fr. Wm. Hupalo, led the Brothers in prayer for a successful Congress. Delegates were welcomed by National President, Bro. Stan Kobylko, KSV. The morning was capably facilitated by Bro. Julian Nahnybida, KSV. This session was devoted to reports by the National President, Eparchial Presidents, Treasurer, Audit Committee and the Foundations.

Excerpts from UCBC National President’s Address (At the National UCBC Congress on July 4, 2010 in Edmonton)

Your Grace, Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, Your Excellency, Bishop

David Motiuk, Rev. Fathers, Sir Knights, & Brothers. Slava Icycy Xrysty!

Sir Knights and Brothers….I hope you feel that you belong to one of the best organizations in Canada----the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood.

Never have I dreamt that I would be the National President of the UCBC. With God’s help, the guidance of St. Volodymyr, and with your support, I hope that my executive and I can continue the work started by Father Stefan Semczuk. I know we have many challenges ahead of us. With God’s help and with a very supportive executive, along with your prayers, I will try

my best as your president.

The National Executive is coming home to the birth province of the UCBC. In 1932, Fr. Stefan Semczuk and some lay men had a vision for the Ukrainian Catholic Church and how the lay people can assist the parish priest and the church. The seed planted in Saskatchewan grew and spread its roots to the rest of Canada.

The Brotherhood is the only men’s organization that is Byzantine Catholic. We are also the founding member of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. We can’t help but be proud to belong to the UCBC.

Membership in the Brotherhood has not only given the members an opportunity to be more involved parishioners, but more effective Catholics. The journey in the Brotherhood is exciting, rewarding and fulfilling. When we look at the members in a Branch, they are so willing to share their time, talents and treasures to help others within the parish and community. In the Brotherhood, everyone can be important because everyone can serve.

I am very pleased with the support and assistance that I have received from the Brothers in our Eparchy. We plan to work as a TEAM. I hope that same support and co-operation also comes from Brothers in the other Eparchies in Canada. We are in this together, it is not up to THEM to do the work, it is up to US to work together.

Looking ahead at the next three years.---We must look at our “VISIBILITY, BUILDING AND MOVING INTO THE FUTURE”.

Let’s undertake to make the Brotherhood better known, more visible, more active, and more involved in the parish and the community. Never be afraid or ashamed to wear the UCBC attire. Our navy blazers, grey pants, tie, crest, lenta or sash tell others who we are and what we stand for. We must be proud of who we are and who we represent. The Brotherhood attire is meant to render our special service to God by assisting the Bishops and clergy during Divine Liturgy. At all times, wear Brotherhood attire with noble pride and respect.

I appeal to all Brothers to get involved and support the youth as they are our future. Encourage and support their organization and projects as they will be the future members of the UCBC and the UCWLC. Support the youth in our parishes financially. Have special events to honour them--swim party, pizza party, paying for their retreat weekend, inviting them to assist in ushering and collections in church.

National UCBC President Bro. Glen Tymiak, KSV

I hope and pray that we could reopen a Branch in the Eparchy of New Westminster. Our Brotherhood family is not complete without a Branch in the Eparchy in New Westminster.

We must look at our web site and have it filled with information about us and keep it updated.

In 1932, Fr. Semczuk started a publication - “The Bulletin“, and later it was called “The Future of the Nation”. We must keep our Brothers informed. Our publication—“Holos Bratstva” (Voice of the Brotherhood) must continue. In the beginning, I would like to see issues that are informative, affordable and interesting.

We need the support of our parish priests. Let’s ask them where we can assist them. Invite them to your meetings and your activities. Work as a team.

In 2012, we will be celebrating our 80th anniversary of the Brotherhood. Are there any projects and activities that would help us celebrate our 80th anniversary?

We need to have the Triennial Congress at the same time and location as the UCWL Congress - joint sessions, banquets, church services and just being together like we were when we started in 1932. We have much to gain by being together.

I’m also looking at having audited financial statements sent on a regular basis to each Eparchy and having dues from each Eparchy paid on time.

In October 2006, we lost our oldest and last original founding member of the UCBC from 1932. Brother Bernard Korchinski, KSV died only a few months short of 101 years. I spoke to him a number of times and he related many stories of the challenges, problems and hard work in the early 1930s. With the dedication of many hard working people, the UCBC was formed. These people worked very hard for what we have today in the UCBC and in our Ukrainian Catholic Church. Let’s not let them down.

Our strength in numbers isn’t large, but our souls and hearts are. Don’t be discouraged! Many organizations are losing members, folding up, having no interest in their programs, activities, projects. I hope that we are not on the verge of extinction. Let’s increase our membership. Invite the young men in our parishes to be UCBC members. Many have never been asked. Never, Never give up…..think about all the people in your parish that you are assisting and helping. Think of your parish priest and the help you are giving him. You may not see a reward now, nor next week, nor next year, but you will see the reward later and feel good about it. Please be proud of our achievements.

When Bishop Cornelius Pasichny first addressed the Eparchial UCBC in Saskatchewan, he emphasized and said, “The Brotherhood is the right arm of the church, and the church relies on you….your work is important for continued vitality and existence of the church…always be there to support the Eparchial and parochial projects….work with your priest….always remember we need God’s Blessing and Spiritual growth to be successful.”

Our former Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk proclaimed many times….”You dear Brothers of the UCBC are the closest to the altar of our Ukrainian Catholic Church.”

As a church organization, we can learn many lessons from the geese.

1. As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because

they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Page 11: ГОЛОС БРАТСТВА VOICE OF THE BROTHERHOOD€¦ · ГОЛОС БРАТСТВА VOICE OF THE BROTHERHOOD БРАТСТВО УКРАЇНЦІВ КАТОЛИКІВ КАНАДИ

2. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

If we have as much sense as a goose we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

3. When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position.

It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

4. The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is

the quality of honking we seek.

5. When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

Brothers, let’s be positive in our daily Brotherhood living. Here are just a few examples:

--Today I can complain the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free. --Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that thorns have roses. --Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive. --Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped and here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping. --What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of day I will have!

Brothers and Sir Knights, let us all continue to work and carry out our aims, goals and objectives for the good of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian community and our country of Canada.

Each of you will be in my prayers, and please remember the National Executive in your prayers.

Mother Teresa once said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not come. We only have Today. Let’s Begin”.

Brothers, let’s begin today…To be more Visible, More Active as we Build and Move into the Future.

Brothers, I look forward to working with you and for you. God Bless each of you with good health and happiness.

Slava Icycy Xrysty! Bro. Glen Tymiak, KSV

History of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada

The year 1932 saw one of the most important developments in the history of the Ukrainian Catholic Organizations, which affected the lives of the Ukrainian Catholics, not only in the Province of Sas-katchewan, but throughout the Dominion of Canada.

The formation of this organization came about by virtue of a Government directive in the year 1929 which forbade religious teachings in school.

Leading members of the Catholic faith strongly protested this directive and it was not long before they realized that this objectionable development could only be eliminated through the cooperative action and the combined efforts of all Catholics in the Province of Saskatchewan. As a result, that year saw the formation of an Organization known as the "Ukrainian Catholic School Trustees" of the Province of Saskatchewan, which body along with school trustees of other national origins, met at the convention in Regina, Saskatchewan to voice their protest.

The Ukrainian Catholic Trustees, led by Mike Bilinsky of Prud'homme, Saskatchewan, deliberated over various problems affecting the rank and file of all Ukrainian Catholics, as well as general school matters of the day. Rev. Stefan Semczuk, a youthful and ideological parish priest of Alvena, Saskatchewan, was a staunch supporter of the cause of the school trustees. It was mainly through his efforts that at a general school trustees Convention in Regina, on June 14th, 1932, it was considered expedient to form an organization which would effectively deal with all problems of the day.

The following members assisted in organizing the first general convention of all Ukrainian Catholics. Teachers-Mike Hrynewich, Joseph Topuschak, Fred Mamchur, Mike Bilinsky, Dmytro Bayda, Harry Dubyk, and Dmytro Kobrynsky. During their stay at the Convention in the Hotel "Regina", the members undertook to compile a program for a future convention to establish a religious organization. The first step was to request authority and permission from His Excellency Most Rev. Vasyl Volodymyr Ladyka, OSBM. Through a formal letter prepared by Fred Mamchur, this permission was granted with best wishes for success.

On the 28th and 29th of December, 1932, the first Convention of the Ukrainian Catholics of

Saskatchewan in Saskatoon was addressed by His Excellency Most Rev. V. Ladyka. Many very distin-

guished guests from all parts of Canada made up the 300 delegates in attendance. This Convention

approved the formation of an organization known as the "Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood".

Membership was open to all Ukrainians of the Catholic faith. The main objective of the organization was

to provide guidance and leadership, to promote religious teaching and to assist in the educational and

cultural development. The full text of the ideological aims and bylaws of the organization were published in the monthly edition of "Bulletin" which first appeared in January, 1933. Over the period of

the initial years, the work of the Brotherhood may best be described under the headings of

"Ideological", "Organizational", "Press", and "Educational and Cultural Developments". The monthly

periodical which became the official publication of the Brotherhood, immeasurably assisted in carrying

out the four point Brotherhood program. In 1937, the name of the periodical was changed to "The

Future of the Nation". Later, the periodical was published bi-monthly by the Redeemer's Voice Press in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. The Editor-in-chief was originally Rev. S. Semczuk, eventually replaced by Rev.

Ihor Shpytkowsky. Dmytro Kobrynsky served as business manager until 1946, when he was replaced by

John Nowosad. With the formation of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon for the Province of

Saskatchewan, the periodical reappeared as "Bulletin" and was typeset by William Kozakewich of

Yorkton. In addition to the regular periodical, the Brotherhood prepared a series of pamphlets on

various historical and educational topics.

Organizationally, more than 25 branches were established in the Province of Saskatchewan. These

were predominantly in the cities and towns where parishes were already in existence. With the passing

of time it became evident that the ideological aims could be carried out more effectively and

successfully through the creation of sub-units. At a Congress of Ukrainian Catholics held on June 15,

1944 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada was created and Mrs.

Mary Dyma became the first President. Shortly thereafter the Ukrainian Catholic Youth was formed.

Very quickly laymen throughout the Dominion of Canada recognized the need for the Brotherhood

and formed Branches in each Exarchate in Canada. A Dominion wide convention of the Brotherhood was

held in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the fall of 1950 which created a parent governing body. The first

president of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada was one of the cofounders of the

Brotherhood, Mr. J. D. Stratychuk of Canora, Saskatchewan.

Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada expanded into all five Eparchies in Canada and continues

to have Tri-annual Congresses that rotate through the Eparchies.

"This Congress has provided a strong mandate for the community to speak with one voice through the Ukrainian Canadian Congress," stated newly re-elected National President Paul Grod. "At a time when we are marking the momentous occasions such as the 70th anniversary of the Congress and looking at the 120th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement of Canada, the Congress will be working with our member organizations to coordinate a series of initiatives across Canada to celebrate this important year. The marquee event will be Ukrainian Day on the Hill to be held on May 11, 2011." Held for the first time in Edmonton, the Congress attracted nearly 300 registered delegates from across Canada representing every aspect of community life and demographic. The resolutions included a reaffirmation of the need for an enhanced presence in Ottawa through an information and resource center; a declaration that we must shift our focus towards community development through capacity building and leadership training as well as a strong commitment to our heritage through promotion of Ukrainian culture, the Arts and language education. A complete list of Congress resolutions adopted will be posted on our website at www.ucc.ca. "In order to achieve our objectives, delegates, committees and member organizations must be engaged at all levels and in all sectors," said Grod. "We need to continue to connect to our community and confirm our founding principle that we are strong when we speak with one voice. We have elected a new board and executive mandated to fulfill the priorities established by the community and it is our intention to do so." The subjects covered by the plenary sessions and workshops were: reconnecting to people at the periphery of the community, cultural and ethnic identity retention; media relations; government relations; Holodomor education; membership structure; youth engagement; welcoming new immigrants; bilingual education programs and engaging Ukraine. In his Congress report, UCC President Paul Grod outlined the activities of the UCC committees, highlighted the key accomplishments of the Congress over the past three years, including:

1. Recognition and Restitution of Canada's First National Internment Operations - including the funding of a $10M endowment by the Government of Canada to the Shevchenko Foundation;

2. Recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide against the Ukrainian people by the legislatures of Canada, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

3. Suspending Canada's harmful war crimes policy and the introduction of changes to Citizenship Act

4. Canada Ukraine relations are at an all-time high since Ukraine's independence. 5. Establishment of Government Relations Office in Ottawa.

In conclusion, Grod outlined the focus for the future of UCC, namely connecting with 1.2M Canadians of Ukrainian descent through the Arts, education, sport, media, politics, awards and recognition, youth and student groups. Other key priorities will be democratic and state development of Ukraine and community development in Canada through organizational capacity building, leadership development and political engagement. "This Congress could not have been so memorable and successful without the tremendous speakers and pre-eminent people who shared with us their wisdom, and views on how to move forward for the future," stated Congress Chair Daria Luciw. "I would also like to thank our performers Hutsuliochky from Ivano-Frankivsk, and Edmonton's own Volyn, and Shumka dancers."
