W ith Bengal elections round the corner Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a successful use of a Government pro- gramme organised to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose even as he linked India’s soaring mili- tary prowess and Atma Nirbhar to Netaji’s Azaadi dreams. Referring to “one of the greatest sons of the country” as the “first Prime Minister of undivided India” Modi said Bose would have been hugely pleased with the current day’s self reliance drive made by his Government. “Steady eradica- tion of poverty, hunger, illiter- acy, adoption of scientific tech- niques and strong borders was the crux of Netaji’s concept of Azaadi (freedom),” Modi said. The greatest of freedom movement would have been “highly pleased to see how Indian strength was flourishing from LAC to LoC and how it posses and manufactures state of the art aircraft like Rafale and Tejas,” said Modi, adding Atma Nirbhar (self reliance) drive made by his Government was what Netaji wanted. “The way we handled the biggest pandemic of the centu- ry and the way we are manu- facturing and exporting vac- cines to other countries too would have Netaji proud,” he said adding how his Government was pursuing the policies that was once envi- sioned by Netaji. “Today we have a national education pol- icy in place and are coming up with IITs, IIMs and other such institutions and legislations to take India from strength to strength… would not Netaji be proud of the developments that we are making today… he cer- tainly would have,” Modi said. “Today India is retaliating in equal measures whenever its sovereignty is being challenged on the borders,” said Modi adding how the concept of “Sonar Bangla” (golden Bengal) — a political coinage of the BJP taken out of Tagore’s works — was inspired by Netaji. “The concept of Sonar Bangla fits with Netaji’s vision of India and Bengal and it is in this regard that the policy of self reliance should be applied both in the State and the entire country,” Modi said. In what local analysts said a clever ploy to use Netaji ahead of the elections, Modi said “though every drop of our blood is indebted to Netaji and though we cannot pay back his debt a time has come to remember his contributions to Indian freedom struggle through various programmes”. One such initiative the Prime Minister said was the renaming of Howrah Kalka Mail as Netaji Subhas Express. Modi’s “finely decorated and well-packaged” statements was aimed at not only the Congress which is often regarded as the mastermind behind the disregard and aban- donment Netaji suffered in the pages of history but also sup- port the BJP’s cause in election bound Bengal, experts said. “On the 125th birth anniversary of the leader, I bow to him on behalf of the grate- ful nation. Today, I also salute this virtuous land of Bengal, which made the child Subhash Netaji,” Modi said. Addressing the Prakram Diwas celebrations in the city, Modi said, “On this day, that brave son was born in the lap of Mother Bharati, who gave a new direction to the dream of independent India.” “On this very day, there was that consciousness in the darkness of slavery, who stood in front of the biggest power of the world and said, I will not ask you for freedom, I will take it away,” Modi said in his trib- ute to Bose. Earlier in the day, Modi paid floral tributes at Netaji Bose’s statue at the National Library in the city. Modi went around seeing paintings by around 100 artists on a 40-metre long canvas on the sprawling lawns of Belvedere House at the National Library compound. He was accompanied by West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. “His bravery and ideals inspire every Indian. His contribution to India is indeli- ble. India bows to the great Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. PM@narendramodi began his Kolkata visit and #ParakramDivas programmes by paying homage to Netaji Bose at Netaji Bhawan," Prime Minister's Office said in a tweet after PM Modi reached Kolkata. T he Delhi Police on Saturday gave permission to protest- ing farmers’ unions to hold their tractor rally on January 26 in the city. Meanwhile, Anil Mittal, the Additional Public Relations Officer (APRO) of Delhi Police, claimed that the police and farmers’ unions are in final stage of talks for the routes regarding tractor rally. After attending the meet- ing with Delhi Police, its coun- terparts Haryana and Uttar Pradesh Police, farmers’ union member Abhimanyu Kohar said the tractor parades will start from Ghazipur, Singhu and Tikri border points of Delhi, but details will be finalised on Saturday night. Kohar claimed that the Delhi Police has given its nod to the farmers’ tractor parade on Republic Day in the nation- al Capital. Another farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said as thousands of farmers will par- ticipate in the parade, there will be no single route. Farmer leader Darshan Pal said barri- cades set up at Delhi border points will be removed on January 26 and farmers will take out tractor rallies after entering the national Capital. Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, have been protesting at several Delhi border points against the Centre’s new agri- culture laws for nearly two months. The unions repre- senting the farmers have begun holding tractor rallies at villages in Punjab to mobilise people for the demonstration on Republic Day. The farmers are vehe- mently opposing the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020. Enacted in September last year, the three laws have been projected by the Centre as major reforms in the agricul- ture sector that will remove middlemen and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers have expressed their apprehension that the new laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of MSP (minimum support price) and do away with the "mandi" (wholesale market) system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates. J awans of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday detected another 150-metre long and 30-feet deep cross- border tunnel, fourth in the last six months, in the Pansar area of Kathua district. The tunnel was detected between border pillar number 14 and 15. A similar tunnel was detected barely 10 days ago in the Bobiya area of Samba sec- tor on January 13. Ground reports suggested the starting point of the tunnel was located closer to two Pakistani border outposts Abhiyal Dogra and Kingre- de-Kothe located in Shakargarh area. On the Indian side, the local BSF commanders passed necessary instructions to their foot soldiers to remain in a state of high alert in the run up to the Republic Day celebrations as Pakistani rangers may try to push heavily armed infiltrators inside the Indian territory to launch terror attacks on vital security installations. Till the time of filing the report the BSF authorities were trying to ascertain whether the same tunnel was recently put to use by the Pakistan- based handlers to push a group of terrorists inside the Indian territory. After supervising the tun- nel on ground zero, Inspector General of BSF, Jammu Frontier NS Jamwal told reporters, “The tunnel was detected by the BSF troops dur- ing an ongoing anti tunneling drive launched in the area on Saturday". He said after receiv- ing intelligence inputs about the presence of another tunnel an extensive drive was carried out in the forward area which resulted in detection of this tunnel. Briefing media persons, IG BSF also claimed the tunnel was designed on the same pat- tern as all previous tunnels. "Without the active connivance of Pakistani establishment and their consent it is not possible to come closer to the zero line," he said. D elhi’s Saket court on Saturday sentenced Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, a former Delhi Law Minister, to two years in jail for assaulting AIIMS secu- rity staff in a case registered in 2016. Bharti, however, was granted bail to enable him to file an appeal before the High Court against his conviction in the case and jail term. The AAP on Saturday said that “injustice” has been meted out to Bharti. “We respect the judiciary and have full faith in the judiciary. However, we feel injustice has happened to Bharti in this case,” the party said in a statement. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey also imposed a fine of one lakh on the AAP leader. According to the prosecu- tion, on September 9, 2016, Bharti, along with nearly 300 others, brought down the fence of a boundary wall at AIIMS here with a JCB opera- tor. “The court is of the con- sidered view that the prosecu- tion has duly proved its case beyond all reasonable doubt against accused Bharti,” the magistrate said. The court convicted Bharti for various offences under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 147 (rioting). It also held the AAP MLA guilty under section 3 (mischief causing damage to public prop- erty) of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The offences carry a max- imum punishment of five years in jail. I ndia and China will hold the ninth round of military level talks on Sunday to find ways to defuse stand-offs now on for the last nine months at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. The latest talks take place after a gap of nearly two months and chances of a major break- through are unlikely. The logjam is persisting as China wants India to first with- draw its troops from the heights of southern and northern banks of the Pangong Tas (lake). In August, the Indian Army secured these hilltops overlooking all the crucial Chinese deployments thereby putting them at a disadvantage. Both the sides have so far not managed to reach a mutu- ally agreed plan for disengage- ment and de-escalation. R ashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad — con- victed in fodder scam cases — on Saturday was shifted to AIIMS, Delhi after his health condition deteriorated while undergoing treatment at a hospital at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi for multi- ple ailments. Earlier, the Inspector General of the jail said Lalu will be flown to Delhi and should be back in Ranchi within a month, said . “Lalu is having trouble breathing for the last two days. On Friday, he was found to be having pneumonia. Considering his age, we have decided to shift him to AIIMS- Delhi on the advice of doctors for better treatment,” RIMS Director Dr Kameshwar Prasad told news agency PTI. I n the past eight days since the launch of the mega anti- Covid-19 drive on January 16, 15.37 lakh persons have been vaccinated till Saturday. Six have died after taking the shots, but the Government has main- tained that their demise has no link with the vaccina- tion. Around 500 cases of AEFI have been reported. Health experts have, however, urged the Union Health Ministry and ICMR to investigate these deaths even if these were not directly linked to the vaccine against the coronavirus. 0n Saturday, a 56-year-old woman who was a resident of Gurugram, succumbed. After taking the jab. “The post-mortem confirms that cardio-pulmonary disease was the reason for her death and it was not related to vaccination. None of these deaths have been causally linked with Covid-19 vaccination,” said an official from the Union Health Ministry here on Saturday. “Is anybody investigating deaths after vaccination so as to come out with do’s and don’ts about vaccination. This is the science we need to contribute to it so that future can be safe- guarded,” said Dr Rahul Bhargava, Director-Bone Marrow Transplant Programme, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram. Another health expert from the Government hospital said most of these beneficia- ries are said to have died because of the heart-related problems. T he United States Senate would begin the impeach- ment trial of former President Donald Trump on February 8, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said. “The January 6th insurrec- tion at the Capitol, incited by Donald J Trump was a day none of us will ever forget. We all want to put this awful chapter in our nation’s history behind us. But healing and unity will only come if there is truth and accountability. And that is what this trial will provide,” Schumer said on the senate floor. Both the Republican and the Democratic Party now have 50 seats each in the 100 member Senate. Schumer said the house managers will come to read the article of impeachment at 7 pm on Monday. I rked by Jai Shri Ram slogans raised by a section of the audience, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday walked off the podium refusing to deliver a speech at an event — attend- ed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The Central Government programme was organised at the iconic Victoria Memorial. Alleged saffron supporters raised the slogans moments before Mamata was to deliv- er her speech. Walking up to the podi- um the Chief Minister said, “I am grateful to the Central Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organising this programme in Kolkata and calling me to be a part of the celebra- tions… but it must be remembered that this is not a political but a Government programme and its dignity must be pre- served… “I must also remind that no one has the right to insult someone after inviting that person… so on protest, I desist from delivering a speech.” Then she walked off in a huff leaving back a befuddled silence. • This is your first show as a lead, how wasthe experience? Did you have some

kind of pressure?Yes definitely. There was a lot of

pressure. It was fun, but challenging.Mahi is an independent girl, motivatedmultitasker, who is betaab tocontribute to her family by making amark of her own. She is the firstwoman cab driver of Amritsar andjuggles between household work andher career at ease. However, on theother hand, Amandeep is not soexpressive. So it was challenging for me

to do justice to my character. Also, being the lead came with a lot

    of responsibility.

Were there anyapprehensions beforetaking up the role?

Yes, a lot. Thecreatives kept on tellingme that I have to carrythe show on myshoulders. They said:“Aman yeh showtera hai, tujhey

hi sambhalna hai.”This made anervous. I thoughtwhether or not Iwill be able to takethis responsibility. Also, thecharacter wasnot so easy. Butat the end of theday, I wasconvinced I cando it.

What al lpreparationsdid you haveto do?

First , Iam a fitnessfreak and Ispent thelockdownkeeping fit.But then I

was told that I am too slim for the role. I was given25 days to gain some weight. I gained about six kgs. That was a challenge. Second, the role demandedme to drive a car. I was well-versed with automaticcars, but here I have to learn driving from thescratch in 15 days. I was made to drive on the galisof Amritsar that too while delivering dialogues onthe go. I told them that I can only do the dialoguedelivery when the car is on a hault because it wasdifficult to do the two things at the same time. Thiswas not all. I was also asked to learn to drive aheavy bike. I found it extremely dangerous, because I can drive a scooty but bullet is way tooheavy. But then I learnt it as well.

How was the day one on the sets?Initially, I was excited for the shoot to begin.

But once I reached the sets and was made to shoot,I got blank. First, there were so many cameras andI had to perform in front of so many people withso much of responsibility. Second, I had to

perform opposite Adhvik Mahajan who isan experienced actor. It made me evenmore nervous. For a few minutes, Iwent blank and couldn’t do anything. Then the director told me that he has

faith in me and that I have performedso good during the mock shoot. It took

me a couple of days to get into the skin ofMahi.

How did Yeh Pyaar Nahi To Kya Hai happenedto you?

After completing my Class XII, Itold my parents that I want to domodeling. I was pursuing my BA andalso modeling. I went for a few shoots. One day, my friend told me that theauditions are happening for Yeh Pyaar...and that had given my profile for it. Iwas shortlisted and was called for theauditions. They liked it and called mefor re-auditioning.

Back then, I thought you have toaudition only once and if you areselected you begin shooting. But realityhit me and went for re-auditioning.

They liked my performance butsaid that i was too young to play thelead. I was only 17 and the characterwas of a 28-year-old girl. But they likedmy audition and asked me if I wouldplay the character of he lead’s sister. Isaid yes.

Wha kinds of roles would you liketo experiment with?

My tummy is full with having gota chance to play Mahi. It is all I couldhave ever asked for. There is a lot toplay in the character. But, if given achance, I would like to play a cop sometime.

More than eight years afterhis death, the ruling ShivSena honoured its founder andpatriarch Bal Thackeray byinstalling a nine-feet tall bronzestatue inside a traffic islandnear the National Gallery ofModern Art on MG Road insouth Mumbai, on the occasionof his 95th birth anniversary onSaturday.

Amid a shower of flowers, sounding of drums and inces-sant applause, Maharashtrachief minister and Balasaheb’spolitical successor UddhavThackeray unveiled the statueof his late father with both hishands in the air, a pose that hadbecome his trademark gesturewhen he addressed Dussehrarallies year after year ever sincethe Shiv Sena was founded in1966.

Balasaheb, who passedaway on November 17, 2012,had stayed away from power allhis life. He was not around tosee his son Uddhav become thechief minister of Maharashtraseven years later.

That he was a tall leaderand is respected by all from sec-tions of people even long afterthis death could be evidenced

from the fact that leaders fromall political parties – like NCPchief Sharad Pawar, senior BJPleader and former chief minis-ter Devendra Fadnavis,Maharashtra CongressPresident Balasaheb Thorat,MNS chief and Uddhav’scousin Raj Thackeray andRepublican Party of India (A)President and Union MinisterRamdas Athawale --turned outfor Balasaheb’s statue unveilingceremony.

Erected on a two feet-highlandscaped pedestal set upinside a traffic island locatedbetween Chhatrapati ShivajiMaharaj Vastu Sangrahalayaand National Gallery ofModern Art, the 9 feet statue of

the late Sena chief is made of1,200 kilograms of bronze. Thestatue has been sculpted by vet-eran artist Shashikant Wadke.

The Sena has tried to cap-ture late Balasaheb’s status ofbeing “Hindu HridaySamrat ’,a title that lakhs of his sup-porters bestowed on him in hislife time, by inscribing hisfamiliar opening line “Jamlelyamajha tamaam Hindu band-havano, bhaginino ani matano”(All my Hindu brothers, sistersand mothers gathered here) ofhis public addresses.

With a smile on his face,Wadke has sculpted lateBalasaheb in his traditionalflowing kurta-pyjama-angavas-tram, with his pair of square-

framed thick spectacles andfamiliar ‘Rudraksh mala’around his neck.

Balsaheb’s is the thirdThackeray statue sculpted byWadke. Earlier, he had sculpt-ed the statues of BalasahebThackeray’s wife Meenatai andhis father Keshav aliasPrabodhankar Thackeray.

From the Thackeray clan,Uddhav, his wife Rashmi,Tourism Minister-son Aditya

    Thackeray,his cousinR a jThackerayand his sonAmit werepresent atthe statueu nv e i l i n gceremony.

    This isfirst statueof lateBalasaheb tohave beeninstalled inM u m b a i .Earlier a 22-feet tall stat-ue of theleader hadcome up inN a v iMumbai. A

grand Balasaheb Thackeraymemorial is coming at theerstwhile Mayor’s Bungalow atShivaji Park in north-centralMumbai.

In the running to theinstallation of Balasqaheb’s stat-ue inside a traffic island indowntown south Mumbaithere was resistance to themove from a Citizens’ group.Vice-admiral (retd) I C Rao,who heads NGO Apli Mumbai,

has written to the Mumbai col-lector, demanding denial ofpermission for the erection ofthe statue. He had cited a 2013Supreme Court order that hadsaid that state governmentsshould not allow any statues onpublic roads and pavements.

Among other things, ViceAdmiral Rao wrote to theCollector: “... We reiterate thatthe erection of a statue at a traf-fic island in Shyama PrasadMukherjee chowk will create atraffic hazard, affecting thesafety of pedestrians, visitorswho may indulge in taking self-ies or merely stop on the car-riageway to view the statue”.

However, the Shiv Sena-ruled BrihanmumbaiMunicipal Corporation (BMC)went ahead and granted per-mission to PrabodhanPrakashan, a book publicationwith which the Thackeray fam-ily is associated. Ignoring resis-tance by the citizens’ group. However, the Sena’s move toinstall late Balasaheb’s statue isunlikely to face any legal hur-dles, as the Mumbai HeritageConservation Committee, thestate home department and theMumbai collector have grant-ed permission to the erectionof the statue.

Rabi crops sowing acreagehas touched an all timehigh this season. According todata furnished by the Ministryof Agriculture, rabi crop sow-ing completed 675 lakh hectarethis year, up from than 662 lakhhectare last year, an increase of2.86 percent. This is an indi-cation that farmers have notboycotted the farming activitiesdespite protests since Octoberlast year.

The record rabi crops sow-ing acreage is the indication theyparticipated in the protests in aplanned manner. With a major-ity of farmers pitching in atDelhi borders in protest againstthe new central farm laws, theirfamily members have been lefttaking care of standing wheatcrop in the field and otherallied activities back home. Inabsence of adult males, womenhave taken the charge of irri-gating fields, sprinkling fertilis-ers in them, tending cattle, milking cows and choppingfodder for them. In some vil-lages, committees have alsobeen formed in several villageswhere fellow villagers irrigatecrops of those who are at theprotest site. The sowing in thecurrent season is not over yetwhile their protest enters the59th day.

As per the data, all majorrabi crops, barring a few coarsecereals, surpassed the area plant-ed in the previous season, whichwas by far the best, already.

    With 345 lakh hectare

acreage, the coverage of wheathas also touched the highestlevel 3.13% more than last year.Much of the increase in wheatplanting was reported fromMadhya Pradesh — whichplanted an additional area of 8.3lakh hectare, Maharashtra 1.07lakh hectare and Bihar 0.84 lakhhectare more. Punjab,Rajasthan, Gujarat andUttarakhand among those stateswhich planted less wheat thisseason. Madhya Pradesh hassurpassed Punjab in wheat cul-tivation for the past two years.

The paddy acreage has alsogone up sharply by 15.24%from last year but significantlydown by more than 28% ascompared to average area dur-ing this time. Much of theincrease in rice area came fromTelangana which planted anadditional 3.49 lakh hectareunder rice.

Gram and mustard are twoother crops which have doneexceedingly well in terms of cov-

erage. Gram has been plantedover nearly 111 lakh hectare, while mustard fields coveredclose to 74 lakh hectare. At theend of the previous rabi season, the area of gram and mustardwas around 107 lakh hectareand 70 l akh hectare, respec-tively.

However, there is a dip inarea under coarse cereals. Ascompared to nearly 55 lhaplanted in the same week lastyear, coarse cereals coveredonly around 51 lha so far.

Agriculture MinisterNarendra Singh Tomar con-gratulated farmers in the coun-try for their tireless hard work.“Despite the corona epidemic, farmers have achieved recordarea coverage under rabi cropsas well as in kharif season, which is remarkable,” Tomarsaid.

According to summer cropcampaign, a target of 51 lakhhas been fixed to cover summerseason with pulses, oil seedsand nutri-cereals crops thisseason. Further, as per 4thAdvance Estimates (2019-20),total food grains production inthe country is estimated at296.65 million tonnes, andhorticulture production 319.57which will be an all time recordin 2019-20.

People with high bloodsugar may have an increas-ing risk of Alzheimer’s thanthose with normal bloodsugar—whether or not theirblood-sugar level technicallymade them diabetic — scien-tists said on the basis of fol-lowing the health status ofover 5,189 people for over 10years.

In other words, the high-er the blood sugar, the fasterthe cognitive decline, saidtheir longitudinal study whichhas been published in thejournal Diabetologia.

Type 1 diabetes is anautoimmune disease needingintake of insulin injection, and type 2 diabetes is a chron-ic disease caused by diet.

“Dementia is one of themost prevalent psychiatricconditions strongly associat-ed with poor quality of laterlife,” said the lead author,Wuxiang Xie at ImperialCollege London.

“Currently, dementia isnot curable, which makes itvery important to study riskfactors,” Melissa Schilling, a

professor at New YorkUniversity, performed herown review of studies con-necting diabetes toAlzheimer’s in 2016.

She sought to reconciletwo confusing trends. Peoplewho have type 2 diabetes areabout twice as likely to getAlzheimer’s, and people whohave diabetes and are treatedwith insulin are also morelikely to get Alzheimer’s, sug-gesting elevated insulin playsa role in Alzheimer’s.

In fact, many studies havefound that elevated insulin, or“hyperinsulinemia,” signifi-cantly increases your risk ofAlzheimer’s. On the otherhand, people with type 1 dia-

betes, who don’t make insulinat all, are also thought tohave a higher r isk ofAlzheimer’s.

How could these both betrue? Schilling posits this hap-pens because of the insulin-degrading enzyme, a productof insulin that breaks downboth insulin and amyloid pro-teins in the brain—the sameproteins that clump up andlead to Alzheimer’s disease.

People who don’t haveenough insulin, like thosewhose bodies’ ability to pro-duce insulin has been tappedout by diabetes, aren’t going tomake enough of this enzyme tobreak up those brain clumps.

    Meanwhile, in people who

use insulin to treat their dia-betes and end up with a sur-plus of insulin, most of thisenzyme gets used up breakingthat insulin down, leaving notenough enzyme to addressthose amyloid brain clumps.

According to Schilling, this can happen even in peo-ple who don’t have diabetesyet—who are in a state knownas “prediabetes.”

Diabetes can also weakenthe blood vessels, whichincreases the likelihood thatyou’ll have mini-strokes in thebrain, causing various forms ofdementia.

A high intake of simplesugars can make cells, includ-ing those in the brain, insulinresistant, which could causethe brain cells to die.

The extra fat in obese peo-ple releases cytokines, orinflammatory proteins thatcan also contribute to cognitivedeterioration, doctors say.

Diabetes may also increasethe risk of developing mildcognitive impairment (MCI), acondition in which peopleexperience more thinking(cognitive) and memory prob-lems than are usually presentin normal aging.
