  • SLAVICISMS AND LITERARY WORDS IN PLAYS BY JOVAN STERIJA

    POPOVI RAGEDIES AND EARLY COMEDIES

    Summary

    The subject of analysis of this paper is studying Slavicisms and literary words in plays

    written by Jovan Sterija Popovic, which represent a very important segment of his work. The

    tragedies Svetislav and Mileva (1827), Milo Obili (1828), Simeon the Foundling (Nahod

    Simeon) (1830) and the early comedies The Liar of all Liars (Laa i paralaa) (1830),

    Scrooge (Tvrdica) (1837), The Upstart (Pokondirena tikva) (1838) and The Evil Woman (Zla

    ena) (1838) are selected as the corpus. These are the works in which we can notice different

    functions of Slavicisms and literary words. In the tragedies, they are features of grand style,

    and in the comedies they usually show exaggeration and affectation of those who use them.

    In the paper, Slavicisms are observed on the level of studying the prestandard period of

    Serbian language, and therefore not only as borrowings from various Slavonic languages.

    Within this term, the words studied are taken from Russian Church Slavonic, Russian, and

    even Serbian Church Slavonic, including literary words and words that are phonetically and

    morphologically adapted to the Serbian national language model so called hybrid words or

    Slavo-Serbisms, as well as original forms created in the Serbian-speaking area, but in full

    accordance with the lexical potential and word formation models of Russian Church Slavonic

    or Russian language.

    The paper looks into Slavicisms and literary words, viewed from the phonetic and word

    formation aspect, and discusses their stylistic and functional role (if found) in the

    aforementioned plays. In the end, the excerpted lexemes are given in the form of a

    vocabulary, where each entry is verified by an example from the work.

    The research has been done in order to describe the language of plays written by one of

    the most important Serbian writers of the 19th century in a more comprehensive manner. In

    doing so, language is viewed as a distinctive language of literary work. The analysis has

    shown that poliglocy in Sterija's plays, especially in his comedies, is not just the classicist

    epoch style, but also an important characteristic of this writers comedic talent.
