Welcome to Bourne Park From The Club Secretary

Johns JottingsJohns JottingsGood afternoon everyone and wel-

come to Bourne Park for this Ryman

league Division One South match. Our

visitors today are four points clear at the

top of the table and have scored more

goals than anyone else in the league.

We welcome their players officials and

supporters as well as the match officials.

The last home match here was against

new comers to our league Whitehawk.

They are a big and aggresive side and it

needed a strong referee to handle the

match. Whitehawks number 4 should

have been sent off early in the game for

a disgraceful elbow against Tom

Bradbrook. The referee either did not

see this or choose not to take action. As

usual with this sort of

event, The Whitehawk

player went on to play

a major part in the

game. In the circum-

stances a 2-2 draw

was a good result

If you thought the ref-

eree here against Whitehawk lacked the

ability to make major decisions you

should have been at Fleet last Saturday.

When we were 1-0 down midway

through the second half, Tom Bradbrook

was what can only be described as

assaulted by the Fleet Town goalkeeper.

Tom was through on goal just outside

the penalty area when the keeper clat-

tered into him. So violent was the colli-

sion that Tom had to be substituted. For

this offence, the referee awarded a yel-

low card! The Fleet Town manager was

so sure (as was everybody else) that his

keeper was going to be sent off that he

readied a replacement. To compound

matters the referee played no more than

three minutes of added time at the end

of the game when five substitutions had

been made in the second half and there

was a lengthy delay for Tom’s injury. It

was interesting to read the views of the

Fleet supporters on their forum who all

agreed that their keeper was lucky not to

be sent off.

One subject on our forum was the

whereabouts of some of our players.

Jimmy Bottle is unable to play midweek

games which is why he has not been

seen much recently. He was also out

injured for a short

time. Kieron McCann

has been released

and has re- signed for

Cray Wanderers. Joe

Bannan, Dion

Managhan and Luke

Blewden have left

after failing to secure

a regular first team spot. Steven

Marshall has not been seen recently.

Joe Vines and Ryan Johnson have both

signed for Maidstone United. Joe

Horlock and Sam Collins complete their

suspensions today so will be available

for selection for Tuesday evening’s

match at home to Whitstable Town.

Enjoy the game!

John

Today’s Visitors - A Brief History

LeatherheadLeatherheadThe modern Leatherhead Football Club was

formed by the merger of Leatherhead Rose

and Leatherhead United in 1946. However

the research undertaken by David Johnston

and Graham Mitchell showed that the

Tanners can trace their continuous history

back to the formation of Leatherhead Rose

in 1907. The Surrey FA checked their

records and confirmed that the 2007-8 sea-

son was Leatherhead’s official Centenary.

The town’s first of many clubs was formed in

1886 and twenty one years later

Leatherhead Rose were established as a

team drawn from Leatherhead Common.

Rose played friendlies until the formation of

the Dorking and District League in 1909 and

they were the first League Champions. The

league shut down between 1914 and 1919

for the duration of the Great War in which

four Rose players and one committee man

were killed. One Leatherhead family closely

associated with Leatherhead Rose, the

Taylors, sent seven brothers to the War. Five

were killed and a sixth lost a leg. Only

‘Lucky’ Arthur remained physically unscathed

and was able to resume his playing career in

1919 -20 when Rose were League

Champions again. In 1920 Leatherhead

Rose joined the Kingston and District

League and won the League title three

times, the last in 1938-39.

Leatherhead United were formed in 1924

and in 1925-26 won Division One of the

Sutton and District League. In 1928-29 they

were third in the Sutton and District Premier

League, behind Leatherhead Rose who were

runners-up. In the early 1930s Fetcham

Grove based United joined the Surrey Junior

League. After becoming Champions in 1933-

34 they joined the Surrey Intermediate

League but were relegated in 1937 after a

disastrous season.

In September 1939 World War II began and

initially all sports were banned but the

restriction was soon lifted. Many leagues

were suspended because men were called

up and there were travel restrictions but the

Kingston League continued. Rose’s Barnett

Wood Lane ground was needed for allot-

ments and they returned to Kingston Road.

United played friendlies and in 1940-41

United beat Rose 3-2, the last ever meeting

of the two sides.

After the War officials of the two Clubs met

and on 27th May 1946 Leatherhead Football

Club was officially formed at a public meet-

ing. The two clubs pooled their financial

resources (a total of £200) and three former

Rose officials and two from United were

elected as officers. United’s Fetcham Grove

ground was to be used although a great deal

of work was required to bring it up to stan-

dard. The Tanners were accepted as late

entrants to the Surrey Senior League and

went on to win four consecutive

Championships before joining the

Metropolitan League, which included some

professional sides. After just one season

they switched to the new all-amateur

Delphian League, joining the Corinthian

League in 1958. They were the League’s last

Champions as in 1963 the Corinthian and

Delphian Leagues joined forced with the

Athenian League. Leatherhead won promo-

tion from Division One at the end of the first

season and inaugurated their floodlights with

a match against a Fulham side including

George Cohen, Alan Mullery, Bobby Robson

and Johnny Haynes. Leatherhead won the

Surrey Senior Cup in 1969 and also collect-

ed the Intermediate Cup and Senior Shield,

a unique achievement. The disappointment

of defeat in FA Amateur Cup semi-finals in

1971 and 1974 was tempered by election to

the Isthmian League.

LeatherheadLeatherheadHistory (Continued)

Leatherhead made national headlines in

1974-75 when they reached the Fourth

Round Proper of the FA Cup. After playing

through all the Qualifying Rounds they had to

overcome Bishops Stortford before meeting

and beating Football League opposition for

the first time. Colchester United went down 1-

0 at Fetcham Grove before ‘Leatherhead Lip’

Chris Kelly’s goal defeated Brighton & Hove

Albion at the Goldstone Ground. The Fourth

Round tie against First Division Leicester City

was switched to Filbert Street where

Leatherhead were two goals ahead at half

time eventually losing 2-3 when the fitness of

the full time players took its’ toll. In subse-

quent seasons the Tanners defeated two

more Football League sides - Cambridge

United and Northampton Town.

In 1978 the Tanners reached Wembley

Stadium at last, but were beaten in the FA

Trophy Final. Tragically Chairman Chris Luff,

‘Mr Leatherhead’ died suddenly in February

1978. His ambition had been to see

Leatherhead at Wembley. Without his leader-

ship the Club entered a period of decline and

were relegated in 1983. In 1985 the Tanners

were denied promotion by a three point

deduction but this period was typified by a

succession of managers and turnover of play-

ers. In 1990 Leatherhead slipped down into

Division Two South but they were back in

Division One in 1997. The Club’s finances

were still a problem and in 1999 only emer-

gency funding kept the Tanners going. In the

summer of 2000 Leatherhead FC was within

a few days of folding. The Club was saved by

its supporters who took over following a crisis

meeting at the end of May. Only one player

remained at Fetcham Grove so a new team

had to be built from scratch and although

Chick Botley won Manager of the Month for

March it was too late to avoid relegation.

Since then the Club has been careful to

ensure that its’ finances are self sustaining

whilst at the same time gradually improving

itself.

In 2006-7 Leatherhead were the lowest

ranked team to reach the First Round Proper

of the FA Cup, losing 1-2 at Football League

side Torquay United. Unfortunately league

form for the rest of the season and in the

early part of the 2007-08 campaign was poor.

When bottom placed and winless Molesey

won 2-1 at the Grove in October 2007, man-

ager David Harlow resigned and the majority

of the squad took that as their cue to leave as

well. Ian Hazel, who had managed Tooting &

Mitcham, Molesey and Sutton was quickly

appointed and immediately faced the tough

task of rebuilding the First Team during the

season, with the Tanners eventually finishing

14th.

However, the Youth Team won the Isthmian

Youth Cup and then the League by the nar-

rowest of margins, equal on points and goal

difference but they had scored one more goal

than their nearest rivals, Maidstone.

Ian Hazel’s reign lasted barely a year, resign-

ing in October 2008; however replacement

Bob Langford’s spell was even shorter, leav-

ing at the end of the season as Tanners

struggled into 15th position. The previous

year’s successful Youth team squad had

stepped up with their manager, Tony

FitzGerald, to form a reserve team after a gap

of 8 years, and duly added to their previous

successes by winning the Suburban League

South Championship by a margin of 18

points.

Mick Sullivan, who had great success in an

eight year stint at local rivals Merstham, was

appointed First Team Manager in May 2009,

and immediately set about rebuilding the

team for the 2009-10 season. Under

Sullivan’s guidance the club had its most suc-

cessful season in years, winning the Isthmian

League Cup and finishing the season in fifth

place in he league before losing a play-off

semi final.

Match ReportMatch ReportSittingbourne 2 Whitehawk 2Sittingbourne 2 Whitehawk 2

Whitehawk were just two

minutes away from gaining

revenge for their 1992/1993 FA

Cup 1st qualifying 1-0 defeat by

Sittingbourne (courtesy of a Dave

Bourne penalty) but a brave Tom

Bradbrook header gave the

Brickies a share of the spoils in a

physical encounter that needed a

stronger hand from the referee.

Sittingbourne almost got off to a

flying start against the league new-

comers when Ryan Golding made

ground into the Hawk’s area and

only a last ditch challenge stopped

him from getting in a shot.

The Hawks first threat came on 8

minutes when Josh Jones ran

down the right and passed inside

to Ben Godfrey whose weak shot

was easily held by Matt Reed.

On 26 minutes Bradbrook did well

to keep the ball in play and he

found Billy Manners whose shot

was blocked. At the other end Joe

Gatting headed straight at Reed.

The half seemed to be heading for

a stalemate when Josh Jones

cross caught the Sittingbourne

defence napping and Jarahl

Hughes struck the ball past Matt

Reed to put the Hawks ahead.

Sittingbourne came out for the

second half with purpose,

Bradbrook having a shot from a

tight angle go narrowly over the

Hawks bar but the Sittingbourne

fans only had to wait until 3 min-

utes into the half when the ball

was floated to Bradbrook who

headed it on to Paul Semakula to

fire in the equaliser.

Jack Hooper had a header go over

the bar and then The Hawks had a

“goal” cancelled out for off

side.Bradbrook had a great chance

but fired his shot wide.

Reed was called into action to

save a free kick after Jack Hooper

committed a foul just outside the

Brickies. The Hawks then had a

penalty appeal turned down but

won a free kick when Hicham

Akhazzan committed a foul to the

right of the Brickies goal, the ball

was floated into the area and an

unmarked Joe Gatting headed

past Reed to restore Whitehawk’s

lead.

Ben Godfrey nearly put the game

beyond the reach of Sittingbourne

on 82 minutes but his shot glanced

off a post, Sittingbourne didn’t give

up though and with two minutes to

go Bradbrook headed the ball just

before the Hawks keeper Lloyd

Anderson got to it, and the ball

trickled into the net and

Sittingbourne were level again.

There was then a tense 4 minutes

of time added on but neither side

could add to the score line.

Chatham Town ended Metropolitan Police’s 100 per

cent record with a 2-2 draw at Imber Court on

Saturday. Few would have given much for their

chances after Craig Brown and Eddie Smith gave the

home side a 2-0 lead in the first half-hour, especially

as the boys in blue had conceded only two league

goals all season.

But Ray Powell’s penalty deep into added time at the

end of the first half gave Chats some hope and they

equalised with a Brad Potter header on the hour.

That stirred the Police into life but Chats keeper

James Tedder atoned for presenting them with their

second goal by pulling off several outstanding saves.

So Leatherhead, who had no game, still lead the

table by five points, though the Met have four match-

es in hand. Bognor, in third place, were on FA Trophy

duty but stayed put as the two teams a point behind

them were both beaten.

Sittingbourne went down to a 24th minute goal by

Darren Wheeler at Fleet while Burgess Hill lost 3-2 at

home to Walton & Hersham in an eventful affair.

Nick Fogden headed the Hillians in front after four

minutes but by the 26th minute he found himself

between the posts to face a penalty after keeper Joel

Harding was sent off for bringing down Phil Williams.

Dean Thomas made no mistake with the spot-kick

and defender Richard Taylor put the visitors ahead

two minutes later. Kenny Ojukwu made it 3-1 in the

hour but Steve Harper pulled one back three minutes

with a penalty for a push by Adam Howarth, who was

himself sent off shortly afterwards.

The red card was also given a thorough airing at

Faversham, who drew 2-2 with Chipstead. Anthony-

James Morrison put the visitors in front after 21 min-

utes, Alex Waugh replied and Chipstead went ahead

again before half-time through Craig Gardner. Tom

Hickman made it 2-2 midway through the second half,

shortly after Faversham manager Justin Luchford had

been dismissed from the bench. His brother, Dane,

was then sent off along with Chipstead’s Adam

Broomhead and Billy Chattaway following a brawl.

Eastbourne hoped to follow up their impressive mid-

week win at Bognor with success in another Sussex

derby, at Horsham YMCA. Although Antoine Douglas

gave YM an early lead, Eastbourne looked on course

as Brett Patton equalised and Sam Crabb put them

ahead on the stroke of half-time. But lowly YM

launched a late rally and took the points with two

goals in the last 13 minutes from Spencer Sachies

and Gavin Gordon.

The scoreline was the same at Whyteleafe where

Josh Smith gave the home side a third-minute lead

and they made it 3-0 by half-time through Freddie

Fleming and a Steven Lloyd own goal. Stuart Vahid

pulled one back on 73 minutes and Ian Pulman

reduced the arrears further, but too late.

An own goal by Tony Timms gave Merstham a half-

time lead at home to Worthing, who equalised early in

the second half with a volley by Tom Lawley. Harry

Ottaway restored Merstham’s advantage but, with

time beginning to run out, Terry Dodd and Michael

Huckett each netted their tenth goals of the season to

put Rebels in front, only for a last-ditch strike by

Jordan Cheadle to make it 3-3.

There were six goals, too, at Whitehawk, where the

hosts overcame Ramsgate 4-2 with goals from substi-

tutes Ben Godfrey and Jamie Brotherton in the last 16

minutes. Mark Lovell opened the scoring for Rams

after four minutes but they were behind by the 19-

minute mark as Josh Jones and Jamahl Hughes

swooped for Hawks. James Gregory’s long-range

strike made it 2-2 at half-time and it stayed that way

until Godfrey claimed his tenth goal of the season.

A 57th minute penalty by Mark Nicholls gave Walton

Casuals a 2-1 win over Corinthian-Casuals. Danny

Buckle’s early header for Walton was wiped out by

Matt Powell just after half-time. Then a foul on Alfie

Arthur gave Nicholls his chance.

Match ReportMatch ReportFleet Town 1 Sittingbourne 0Fleet Town 1 Sittingbourne 0

This match turned on an amazing

decision by referee, Mr Whittaker. mid-

way through the second half, with

Sittingbourne trailing by a goal scored in

the first half by Darren Wheeler directly

from a free kick. Tom Bradbrook got the

better of the Fleet defence and only had

the keeper, Jamie Norris, to beat when

the young Fleet goalkeeper deliberately

clattered into him leaving leading

Sittingbourne goalscorer Bradbrook

injured on the ground. Mr Whittaker

reached into his pocket and pulled out a

yellow card when it was clearly a red

card offence. Uproar followed with

Sittingbourne manager, Gary Abbott,

understandably upset by this. The refer-

ee, who by now probably realised his

huge mistake, sent Abbott from the dug

out. The resultant free kick, just outside

of the penalty area, was taken by half

time substitute, Hicham Akhazzan. His

shot went harmlessly wide of the Fleet

goal. To compound matters, Bradbrook

had to be substituted because of the

injury he sustained in the collision.

Mr Whittaker had already angered the

Bourne faithful by refusing a penalty five

minutes from half time when Bradbrook

was tripped from behind in the Fleet

penalty area.

Fleet were the better side in the first half

with Reed having to make a number of

saves. The lively Dyer and Wheeler up

front were giving the Sittingbourne

defence a torrid time. Laurence Harvey,

back in the side after missing a number

of games through injury gave away the

crucial free kick that Fleet scored from.

The second half was a different matter.

Hicham Akhazzan replaced Jack Hooper

and he gave the Bourne attack a distinct

boost. Sittingbourne were now playing up

the pronounced slope and with Golding,

Akhazzan and Bradbrook seeing more of

the ball an equaliser looked likely. Fleet

were still dangerous though and Fleet's

best forward, the diminutive Johnnie

Dyer, and perhaps should have done bet-

ter than shoot into the side netting.

Golding then headed over the Fleet bar

from 5 yards after and excellent cross by

Akhazzan.

After 58 minutes, Akhazzan got some

power behind a shot and Fleet goalkeep-

er, Norris was only able to push the ball

away. Bradbrook latched on it only to be

robbed at the last second by the keeper.

Then came the Collision incident

between Bradbrook and the Fleet keeper

Jamie Norris. The Fleet manager, in

anticipation of a sending off had already

readied a substitute to replace Norris

when he realised that Christmas had

come early for the Hampshire side. As

Bradbrook was hobbling off injured a

remark he made to the referee earned

him a caution.

The last goal action of note in the game

came when Darren Wheeler's shot saw

Matt Reed pull off a good save.

The referee had not finished his baffling

officiating as it was indicated that one

minute of additional time would be

played. Taking into account that five sub-

stitutions had been made in the second

half and the long delay due to the

Bradbrook incident it surely should have

been at least five minutes.

Hi everyone and welcome to today’s game against Leatherhead.

It’s been a mixed couple of weeks for the club as we have only got 1 point from the last two

games. We went into the game at home to Whitehawk in a great position being third and a

win would be great for us. However, we only managed to salvage a point in the end which I

did think was a fair result. Whitehawk are the new team in the league with a big budget and

I am sure they will finish in a healthy position at the end. I believe that we did play well in

patches and not for the first time this season we showed fantastic spirit to come from behind

twice to salvage a point. I can quite honestly say that my nose is still hurting after the keep-

er punched me full on ! The things you do for the sake of football… it’s a great sport !

We then moved onto last Saturday away at Fleet….. what to say about this one !!!!!

ASSULT SPRINGS TO MIND ! All of the boys and the fans must feel gutted about this

game. I don’t believe we deserved to lose especially the way we did in the end. I don’t think

either team played that well and it was a bit of a scrap. They got a free kick and to be fair

great goal. We tried our best to get back into the game but it was not to be. As you probably

saw in the first half, I was clearly tripped in the box and that should have been a penalty.

Like everyone, I still cannot find a reason why the ref did not send of their keeper. It was a

clear goal opportunity in which the keeper fully stopped which must be a red card. It’s a bit

embarrassing when their captain and keeper both apologies and state that he should have

left the field. I had to leave the pitch as it felt like I had been hit by a bus and could not walk

(or see in fact!). Abbo was sent off and the day just could not get any worse !

In the words of the great Ron Atkinson when he was asked how the ref got on in a game

he said….. ‘’ Look, you know that after a game I never comment on the referee, and I am

not going to break a habit of a lifetime to talk about that stupid @&%£# ’’ priceless !

Anyway, even after losing the results went our way and we currently sit in fifth which is still a

great position. We may have played more games but we have the points on the table and

that’s the main thing ! The mood in the camp is still pretty good and we just need to get

another win under our belt !

Regarding Injuries I think Joe is close to coming back to training, it will be great to see him

back. Joe Horlock still has one more games suspension, we are really missing him so it will

be a boost when he returns.

I am not great at the moment after that tackle at Fleet. As I write I am limping quite bad

which is not good. I will have to see how it is today as I do not want to miss it.

Today’s game against Leatherhead is going to be tough indeed as they have started the

season well.

Please get behind us as much as you can ( I am sure you will as usual) !

Thanks again for your support,

Bradders
