OF COWES
World-famous Beken of Cowes calendars printed with your name, logo, or message Beken of Cowes are perhaps the world’s most famous marine photographers. Having been in the business for more than 130 years, they have amassed an unrivalled archive of stunning sailing photographs, which naturally make for superb calendars.
Now in their 48th year of publication, we produce two versions. The ever-popular Yachting calendar features vivid and dramatic images from the world-class sailing events that take place around the Isle of Wight each year – putting you right in the thick of the action. Also, a brand new concept for 2021 is a specially updated version of Beken’s Classic calendar – Classics Old and New takes a closer look at six stalwarts of the classic yacht racing scene, alternating between the vintage sepia-toned images of the early 1900s and an up-to-date full-colour photograph of the same vessel decades later.
Printed with your name, logo, or advertising message, Beken of Cowes calendars are a superb, cost-effective way of keeping your brand in front of your customers all year round. Beautiful images of classic yachts and racing action, very high quality printing, and year-round usefulness ensure high levels of retention and therefore exposure for your company.

After WW2 she was sold and moved to the Mediterranean. ‘MOONBEAM IV’ 2005
Les Grandes Voiles de St.Tropez always attracts the finest craft, and pictured here is the
1920 gaff cutter Moonbeam IV. She was once described by noted French yachtsman Eric
Tabarly as “The most beautiful yacht ever built”. After WW2, and sporting an easier-
managed Bermudan Rig, she was purchased in 1950 by Prince Ranier of Monaco and his
new wife Grace Kelly spent their honeymoon on her. In 1999 under the ownership of John
and Françoise Murray, she was taken to Myanmar (Burma) to undergo an extensive 3 year
restoration involving up to 50 local Burmese. Her 105-ft teak hull accommodates six guests
in three staterooms plus a crew of six. In the background can be seen Eleonora the 2002
built replica of the classic racing schooner Westward.

‘THENDARA’ 2001
After cruising in the Mediterranean for over 30 years, Thendara was purchased anew to be extensively restored in 1994 by Southampton Yacht Services & Spencer of Cowes who made her new gaff ketch rig in Columbian pine. She is unique in carrying a Jackyard Topsail on her mizzen as well as her mainmast. Her fine interior mahogany panelling reflects her Edwardian style and she can accommodate six guests in three luxury staterooms plus a crew of seven. Her sails are mainly by Ratsey of Cowes. Still cruising and participating in Classic Yacht Regattas, she has won many trophies on both sides of the Atlantic. She is pictured here in the Solent off Cowes celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the original America’s Cup of 1851.

‘MOONBEAM IV’ 1920
The classic Fife gaff cutter was launched in 1914 but only commissioned in 1920 after
WWI. Designed and built by William Fife Jnr. of Scotland. She is pictured here in
her first season when she raced off Cowes with others of the “Big Class” winning the
King’s Cup, which she repeated in 1923. She is constructed of teak planking over steel
frames, her measurements being 105-ft (35-metre) LOA, 18-ft (5.5-metre) beam, 13-ft
(4-metre) draft with a Gross Registered Tonnage of 39. By the 1930s she had become
outclassed by the new J-Class yachts and she retired from racing.

Classics, Old & New CalendarNew for 2021, this design takes a closer look at six truly iconic racing yachts whose performance and beauty have stood the test of time. Each is shown as she appeared in the 1920-1930s in a sepia-toned image from the Beken archives, and followed, the next month, by a stunning full-colour action shot of the same vessel taken decades later. As always, the calendars are printed to the highest standards on 200gsm gloss paper, A2 (60x42cm) in size.4880 Classics Calendar

GULVAIN
Named after a noted Scottish mountain peak, she was designed by Laurent Giles and built in 1949 by Rawlings of Shoreham UK as the first ocean racing yacht constructed of an aluminium alloy. Her fine reverse sheer hull measures 55-ft (17-metre) and her masthead rigged design was an extension of two earlier successful yachts Maid and Myth of Malham. She has many ocean races under her belt in the USA and Europe and, as befits a 70 year old lady, she is now better suited to Classic Yacht events here pictured in Panerai’s Round the Isle of Wight Race.

‘VELSHEDA’ 1934
Built for British Woolworth’s owner William Stephenson and named after his three
daughters: Velma, Sheila, and Daphne. This was the 2nd British J-Class, and the fi rst
to be built in steel. She measured close to 128-ft (39-metre) overall with a waterline of
83-ft (25.3-metre). She had a draft of 15-ft (4.6-metre) and carried 7,500-sq.ft (700-sq.
metre) of sail. Never intended to be a challenger for the America’s Cup, she nonetheless
sported many new & innovative features including technically advanced winches and a
riveted aluminium mast. In her second season she won 40 races around the UK and acted
as a trial horse for successive America’s Cup challengers until being laid up in 1937.
