PARISH OUTREACH FOR LOCAL NEEDS
One way our parish helps local families is through the St. Vincent de Paul Society
Donation boxes in back of each church.- 728-5192 New members always welcome.
∗In our desire to better meet the spiritual needs of
Holy Family parishioners, Father Stephen and the
Parish Council are considering a change to the
Saturday evening Mass time at St Mary Church,
Dansville, from 5:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This comes after
listening to concerns from parishioners who
specifically attend this Mass and prefer an earlier hour.
As always it is our desire to do what is best for our par-
ish community. If you have any concerns re-
garding this change, kindly contact the office or con-
tact a Parish Council Member. This change is sched-
uled to take place on January 9th, 2016.
4th Sunday of Advent
Thanksgiving weekend, with its compressed timeline, is the busiest time for travel. But Christmas is not that far behind. The days immediately before Christmas involve people returning home to be with family for the holiday. The days after Christmas are packed with families traveling for a quick vacation while the children are out of school for a week. The 1844 poem "Over the River and through the Woods" by Lydia Maria Child was originally about journeying to grandfather's house for Thanksgiving Day. Later recorded versions turned it into a Christmas song describing the sleigh ride to grandmother's house. Either way, for a long time these winter holidays have involved traveling. This weekend's Gospel is another traveling story. Pregnant with Jesus, Mary leaves the confines of Nazareth in Galilee and heads south, up into the hill country of Judea. Is she fleeing because she has no husband yet? Is she going to seek the counsel of an older kinswoman? Or is she just heading off on a friendly little visit? We don't really know. Luke doesn't tell us, and so her journey is open to speculation. But Mary's arrival is the first occasion of an expression of joy about the birth of the Savior. Elizabeth proclaims that the infant in her own womb leaped for joy because of the nearness of salvation. We know that experience. Think of what happens when family or friends finally arrive after a long journey to spend some time over the holidays. They are welcomed and greeted and made to feel at home. This is our natural reaction to seeing folks who have not been around for a while. We are glad that they are here. Now, take that very natural human reaction and imagine what it will be like to welcome Christ. Through baptism, we are his brothers and sisters. We are family. And when he returns we will welcome him with great joy!

Advent Thought for the Week
The third Sunday of Advent has been traditionally known as “Gaudete Sunday”. Gaudete is a Latin word meaning “rejoice”. Today, when you light the Advent wreath, you will light the pink candle symbolizing joy. Today, we are reminded that this wreath represents the key elements of our faith……..the circular shape should remind us of God’s unconditional love for us , even when we make poor choices. The fresh evergreen in the wreath is a hopeful sign of life during the cold, winter season. (However, we are presently enjoying an unusual warm, non-threatening climate). The candles on the wreath are entrenched in the ancient practices of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, but it is also the point when sunlight begins to increase. Therefore, lighting one candle each week, indicates the movement of the rays of sunlight as well as the glow of the newborn Son of God, Baby Jesus. The lighted candles also remind us that the light of Christ will never be overcome by darkness. So, as you light the pink candle today, feel sheer joy and exultation!
The Tree of Life
One Christmas preparation that seems to be truly treasured is the placing of a tree in our homes, businesses, churches, and outside on our lawns. These adorned trees are sacred signs of God’s life-giving presence. The Christmas tree captures the central truths of our salvation like no other. The evergreen reminds us that God’s love is continuous through every season of our lives. The lights on our trees do two jobs. They beckon us to think of the Savior arriving and they also make us reflect on the past and look toward the future as we think of the Baby Jesus who comes as the Light of the World. Treetops with stars remind us of the guiding light leading all to the stable in Bethlehem. Angel toppers make us feel protected and also remind us of God’s wonderful graces showering us daily. Our tree ornaments, usually represent precious memories of people and places in our lives, most showing our family history. The wonderful fragrance of our fresh live trees resonates with us throughout each day which seems to give us extra energy and hope. The Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, planted by God, set the tone for mankind. In addition, the Jesse Tree tells the story of how God protects and saves us. The Messiah makes the tree of the cross an instrument of our salvation. So, please remember to think of setting up, taking down, and adorning your tree as a special time to cherish as you make time to think of the emotions or bonds connected with each ornament you hold in your hand before placing it in the “perfect” spot on your tree. In the coming weeks, make time to sit back and enjoy the peacefulness and serenity the brightly decorated tree gives you. Our trees are truly “trees of life” in our homes. Imbibe in their power! Think of Isiah 11:1 …….”A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.”
