Welcome back to a short but packed half term! We hope the children (and the Brierley parents!) had a relaxing break and are ready to start the new half term with lots of hard work, enthusiasm and energy. Last half term, children across the whole school enjoyed lots of science workshops, thanks to Techniquest at Glyndwr University, and we have lots more to come this term! Before the half term, we had a fantastic Valentine’s Day Disco which was extremely well attended. The children had a great time! We managed to raise an almighty £280.20! Well done everyone! A big thank you to Sara Roberts, Disco Stu and all the staff who stayed to help.

The winners of the Reading Corner competition, Year 3, 4 and 5, will be going to Waterstone’s this term to each select a book for the school library. The Extreme Reading competition will be announced later this week, thank you to all of the children and teachers that submitted their extreme reading pictures. The Reading Raffle will be announced shortly!

We have just a few reminders for this half term:

EYFS - UNDER CONTSRUCTION

EYFS is currently under construction, reviving the outdoor play area to

provide the children with a new and exciting interactive space! We would like to give Mr Jennings, whose daughter, Millie, is in Reception, a massive thank you for creating and donating some fantastic play equipment for the children to use. It is certainly appreciated! Another big thank you goes to Miss Smith, Miss Appleby and Mrs Ruscoe for finding and bringing in lots of materials to put into the EYFS play area! BRIERLEY GREEN DAY

On Friday 16th February, we had our Green Day! We were really pleased to see how many

children wore green and brought in recycling for us to reuse, from glass jars to egg

cartons. We started our day with an assembly where we learnt about the 3 R’s – Reuse,

Reduce and Recycle. We talked about what our environment would look like if we didn’t

look after it and watched the opening clip from Wall-e which showed the Earth in the

future – polluted and destroyed. After that, we talked about what we can do in school

and at home to help the environment from turning the tap off when we brush our teeth to

walking to school.

Throughout the day, each class took part in a recycling, reusing activity. Reception used

recycled items to do some construction, Years 1 and 2 made flowers from egg cartons,

Years 3 and 4 made necklaces and bracelets using catalogues and Years 5 and 6 up-

cycled glass jars using tissue paper to make lanterns.

Well done to the Year 5 pupil governors (Summer, Amy and Leo Jones) who did a super

job helping the Year 1 and 2 children with their flower craft!

Our first Forest Schools trip of 2018 took place on Friday 16th February at The Quinta

Nature Reserve, Swettenham. We took a group of 19 pupils with us, who had all recently

completed the forest schools programme in school on a Friday afternoon. We were

fortunate that we had a decent day weather-wise and the only bit of mud we found was

the swampy walk to the stream in the afternoon (which the children really enjoyed!).

During the first part of the day we went on a nature walk through the forest and we all

had a go at building and lighting a fire! Despite some good efforts, none of the children

could quite get the required spark in their 10 attempts so it was left to Mr Delaney and Mr

Foulkes to do the honours!

BRIERLEY FOREST SCHOOL

Thank you to all of the Brierley pupils who

represented the school well and showed

good understanding of Science and the

natural world.

Thank you to Miss McIntosh, Miss O'Leary and

Mr Delaney for accompanying myself and

the children to Quinta and a big thank you

to Nick Rowles at the Cheshire Wildlife Trust

for leading the day.

Mr Foulkes

After fishing, we returned to camp and made some

natural clay artworks using materials from the forest

floor and some of the pupils played some games of

forest cricket. We also had chance to look in greater

depth at some of the tree species and the signs of

Spring that were appearing in the forest.

After lunch we hiked down to the stream, through the

mud to the stream dipping area. All of the pupils were

able to get in the stream and using their nets and a

special kicking technique to disturb the stream bed, we

hoped to catch some of the animals living there. Despite

it being a chilly February day, we caught a record THREE

bullhead fish!! All fish were named and then put into the

trays with various types of shrimp and other marine

animals for everyone to examine.

Once the fire was lit, we enjoyed hot chocolate and

toasted marshmallows before some games of 1-2-3 home.

The pupils were then given time to 'free play' and make

dens using the branches on the forest floor and tarps.

In English, we have been looking at some of our favourite

nursery rhymes and looking at rhyme and alliteration. In

Maths, it was Humpty Dumpty's birthday, we had to put the

correct number of candles on his cake and we had a

Humpty Party in the role play area. We have been using

story boxes and have made up our own stories to share with

the class. We have also made our own ‘Queen of Heart

tarts’ which we used for working out more and less and

combining quantities. What a busy week!

EYFS NEWS

We have had a fantastic time learning all about Humpty

Dumpty. The children became detectives and tried to find

out why Humpty Dumpty had fallen off the wall. They all

thought Goldilocks might be responsible! In Literacy and

phonics, we have really enjoyed doing lots of brilliant

rhyming. We have also been learning about where the

Queen lives and characteristics of palaces and castles. In

our classroom, the children were introduced to our new

castle role-play area and have had fun dressing up as

royalty.

This week, we have been looking at a new book called

‘Pass the Jam Jim’, through which the children have looked

at rhyming words and alliteration. We have looked at

parties from around the world and compared these to our

own experiences of celebrations and parties. We enjoyed

talking about what our favourite party games are. We even

had a go at playing some of them!

PHASE 2 NEWS

This week we had a huge focus on Science and were lucky enough to have three

workshops; one about forces, one about materials to save Humpty Dumpty and one

about the bones in our body.

In forces, we looked at push, pull, friction and gravity. Some volunteers came to the front

and demonstrated using the forces of push and pull to use different objects. We sorted

them into push, pull or push and pull. A phone was the only one that we pushed and

couldn't pull! We had a look at different materials and what we could do to it to change

the shape e.g. twist, bend, push, pull, stretch, squash, squeeze. Finally, we looked at

different toys and how they move. We discussed the word ‘gravity’ and how it helps

certain toys like rockets and yo-yos to move.

On Tuesday, we were set a challenge to protect our ‘Humpty Dumpty’ egg when

dropped from a height. Working in groups, we had to discuss our ideas first before making

a protective cover made from the materials provided. Fortunately, no eggs were harmed

during this investigation and survived the crash landings!

Finally, we had visitors teach us about bones and our body. We started by looking at the

human skeleton and labelled the different parts of the body looking at a selection of x-

rays of different body parts to see the structure of different animals. We put on special

gloves to show what it would be like to not have thumbs and we had to draw a picture

which we found very difficult! Then we looked at the journey food takes starting with the

first bite. We followed the bite of food down the food pipe, into the stomach full of acid

and into our intestines! We then looked at how our body disposes of the waste water and

food.

What an exciting week we have had!

We have brought our English work on the Enormous Turnip to

life by planting our own vegetable seeds!

We discussed what a plant needs to survive and grow. We

then used this knowledge to place our planted seeds in

different places to investigate which thing plants need the

most to survive! We shall be observing over the next few

weeks which plants grow and which ones don't!

Page 7: Messagesbrierley.cheshire.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/...nursery rhymes and looking at rhyme and alliteration. In Maths, it was Humpty Dumpty's birthday, we had to put the correct

In Years 3/4, we have started to study persuasive

texts. Miss McIntosh from Brierley Travel Agents began

the unit with a persuasive presentation about Egypt

and all of its amazing attractions.

We also took part in another practical

Techniquest workshop about the human body. We

worked in groups to complete a series of

exciting activities relating to the human skeleton,

organs within our bodies, the effect of exercise on

our heart rate and 'secret' ingredients in everyday

foods.

The police constable (who looked strangely like Mr

Coombs) decided the best course of action was to

ring Liverpool Museum and get them to send some

scientists to collect the mummy. Luckily, they also

arrived super quickly and took the mummy away to

be examined. It’s a good job Phase 3 have been

learning how to write a recount over the last couple

of weeks as we have now been asked to write our

witness statements!

PHASE 3 NEWS

There was a very strange occurrence as Mr Brazier stumbled

across an ancient Egyptian mummy! He found it in our own

playground! Luckily, Mrs Mc was there to take control of the

situation and phone the police. They came ironically quickly

and cornered off the area.

PHASE 4 NEWS

In Year 5 and 6, the children all had the opportunity to share their

homework projects linked to our new history topic about the

Mayans. Many of the children did a super job and shared models,

posters, research and Power point presentations. The children are

now building on this knowledge in class and have so far looked at

timelines of events in history and events which occurred during the

Mayan times.

In English, the children have been very busy writing their final drafts

of their persuasive letters. They have carried out debates in

guided reading and have impressed the teachers with their

presenting skills.

We have had a super week in Phase 4 this week! In Year 5, in

English and guided reading, we have moved onto looking at a

new book, ‘Queen of the Falls’ which we will base our next piece

of writing on, whereas in Year 6 we have continued our work on

persuasive letters.

Our afternoons have been fun-filled with a number of exciting

science workshops from light and sound to exploring DNA. The

children have had a chance to participate in a number of

different experiments and learnt lots of interesting facts.

1st February – Year 6 Shooting Competition

Tatton showed good composure in front of the post by beating a good Anderton side 5-2,

whilst Jodrell edged their way past Delamere 3-2. Round 2 saw Delamere bounce back from

defeat in Round 1 with a comprehensive 4-1 win against Tatton, with Bradley Wilkins in deadly

form. The pressure and the swirling wind led to a series of near misses and a 1-1 draw. Going

into the final round, Tatton and Jodrell couldn't find a late winner in a 4-4 thriller, with Nicola

Slupska and Megan Degnen shooting well; Anderton went goal-crazy against Delamere,

winning 7-2! Kye Dixon and Dylan Bloor were both in amongst the scorers for Anderton. Our

winners were JODRELL, ahead of Anderton who clinched 2nd place by a single goal! Tatton finished 3rd place, ahead of Delamere in 4th place. Well done to the Jodrell squad: Kara

Lyons, Lilly-May Lindsay, Rafal Boguslawski, Kailen Wright, Caitlin Woodward and Darja Kozina

(Y5).

2nd February - Year 3 & 4 Beanbag Boccia

The aim was for each player in the team to try to get their beanbag closest to a target 10m

away. In the first round, Tatton showed great skills to beat Anderton 3-0 whilst Jodrell edged

past Delamere 2-1 in the other match. Round 2 was close, Tatton clinched a 2-1 win against

Jodrell to make it 2 wins out of 2 and Delamere beat Anderton 2-1. In the final round it was all

still to play for, but TATTON made it a clean sweep to clinch 1st place. They beat Delamere 3-0 to score maximum points, meaning the other houses were battling for 2nd position. Anderton

staked their claim to beat Jodrell 2-1. Jodrell came out with 3pts, Delamere score 2pts and

Anderton score 1pt. Well done to the Tatton squad: Bartosz Babula, Gabriel Slusarczyk, Nathaniel Isiama Mba, Nadia Czuczalow, Rebecca Micklewright and Maja Molik

BRIERLEY HOUSE CUP .

6th February – Year 5 & 6 Wordsearch Competition Each team had their own wordsearch to complete in the fastest time. In Round 1, 'Football terms’, Delamere stormed to victory in 3mins 29s! Anderton were close behind on 3mins 43s and Tatton grabbed 3rd place on 4mins 21s. Jodrell completed the task in 5mins 3s. In Round 2, they had a new wordsearch topic 'Gym terms’. Delamere again showed their superiority, completing the task in 2mins 49s. Tatton were 2nd (3mins 35s), ahead of Anderton (3mins 49s) and Jodrell on 4mins 23s. Well done to DELAMERE who were our winners and take home 4pts. Tatton and Anderton share

2nd place and 3pts, with Jodrell in 4th place. Well done to the wordsearch team: Bradley Wilkins, Angel Biddle, Tahlia Clark, Kasey Franklin, Hayden Ollier and Shekinah Marembo.

7th February - Year 3 & 4 Boccia and Year 5 Netball Competition In the first semi-final Jodrell took on Delamere and it was tied at 3-3 until Jodrell pulled away to win 5-3 in the end. The other semi-final saw Tatton win through 5-3 after negotiating a strong Anderton comeback at one stage. The 3rd/4th place playoff was between Anderton and Delamere and this was the closest match of the competition. Both teams had now got their eye in and produced some exciting games, with Delamere winning 4-3 to claim the 2pts ahead of Anderton (1pt). In the final, Jodrell and Tatton faced off. There were some excellent shots from Denzel Lisboa, Lucas

Jones (both Jodrell) and Louis Bradley (Tatton). Tatton edged ahead 2-0 but Jodrell then responded with 5 straight wins to clinch the 4pts. Well done to the JODRELL team: Denzel Lisboa, Harvey Lindsay, Lucas Jones, Noah Jones, Landon Ball and Logan Cunningham.

Year 5 took part in a House Netball Competition within their PE lesson. This came at the end of their

unit of work on Netball, and it was a fantastic opportunity to play lots of games and to take on board the different skills and rules of the game. In Round 1, Delamere were 2-0 winners against Jodrell and Anderton edged past Tatton 2-1. Despite an end-to-end match in Round 2, Tatton and Jodrell remained goalless and Anderton played superbly well to beat Delamere 3-0. In the final round, Anderton made it clean sweep of wins by beating Jodrell 1-0 and Tatton beat Delamere 2-0. Our winners were ANDERTON. Tatton clinched 2nd place and 3pts, ahead of Delamere 2pts and Jodrell 1 point. Well done to all of Year 5 for a really good competition.

8th February – Year 6 Climbing Competition This is always one of the most popular competitions and we had all of the Year 6’s taking part! Using the climbing frame in the hall, the pupils had to climb their way around a course in the fastest time. To find the winners, the times for each house were added up and then averaged. The fastest time was recorded by Bradley Wilkins (Delamere). His time of 9 seconds was a second faster than Kye Dixon (Anderton) and Marcel Krawczyk (Tatton). The fastest climbers in Jodrell house were Kailen Wright and Kara Lyons who recorded times of 15 seconds. The overall winning team was DELAMERE- well done to Bradley Wilkins, Tahlia Clark, Leslie Richardson, Bob Fearn and Angel Delahaye. Tatton scored 3pts for 2nd place, Jodrell 2pts and Anderton 1pt.

13th February – Year 5 & 6 Boccia In the first round of fixtures, we had 2 really close matches, with Anderton beating Tatton 5-4 and Jodrell were 5-4 winners against Delamere. Round 2 saw Delamere show superior accuracy in their

6-3 win against Tatton, whilst Jodrell were involved in another 5-4... this time they lost to Anderton. Anderton's 4-3 defeat to Delamere opened the door for another house to sneak past them in the table. Tatton chalked up their first win, a comfortable 5-2 against Jodrell to end Jodrell's chances of winning the competition. The positions were drawn on points scored: DELAMERE (4pts), Anderton (3pts), Tatton (2pts) and Jodrell (1pt). Well done to the Delamere team: Bob Fearn, Leslie Richardson, Kasey Franklin, Shekinah Marembo, Angel Biddle and Trinity Palin.

BRIERLEY NETBALL

We entered two teams into the Crewe Netball competition at Sir William Stanier, on Wednesday 14th February, and we were hoping we could continue our development and improve on our last matches. Both teams were placed into the same group, with 7 school teams competing.

Brierley A opened against Mablins Lane B. We defended well and were accurate with our passes in a 5-0 victory, with goals coming from a Bradley Wilkins hat-trick and two from Trinity Palin. Game 2, a tie with Brierley B, the children were extremely excited about! Played in good spirit, and after a scrappy start by both teams, Brierley A won 4-1 with goals from the same two players - Bradley (2) and Trinity (2). Game 3 was a challenge against Mablins Lane A, who had beaten us in the

previous Netball League match. We were more competitive but we didn’t defend to well, allowing Mablins to carve a 4-1 lead at halftime. We put in a fantastic second half performance which blew Mablins away. We had a goal of the day contender in which we went from our own baseline to Marcel Krawczyk scoring at the other end! Despite a huge effort we could only claw the game back to 5-4. Goals in this game went to Marcel (2), Tahlia Clark and Angel Biddle.

After a battling defeat, we lost out 4-1 to Wistaston Academy where the main difference between the two sides was that we didn’t take our chances at key moments and they were clinical when in the D. Trinity scored our goal and we moved on swiftly to play Hungerford in game 5. We had the perfect goal crazy response in this one! We played some good, fast netball to set up chances,

winning the ball high up the court and working together to create an opening for the shot. We ran out 7-2 winners with goals from Trinity (3), Marcel (2), Bradley (2) and Nicola Slupska. In our final match of the day we faced Gainsborough and now we had our eye in, we rattled in another 7 goals in a 7-0 win! Again the netball was fantastic and the players were working well as a team. Goal scorers in this one were Matthew Thompson with a hat-trick, Marcel (2) and Tahlia (2).

Brierley B began the competition with the game against Brierley A and we put on a good performance, with many of the players still fairly new to the game. We did manage a goal, which was superbly taken by Ashton Degnen and there was optimism for the games ahead. In game 2, we played well in a 1-1 draw with Mablins Lane B, Ashton again grabbed the goal, but it was some

excellent defending from Owen Harvey and Aaliyah Wilson that kept Mablins out. In game 3, against Hungerford, we played an entertaining 2-2 draw. Some great passing from Shekinah Marembo played in Ashton for both of our goals.

We chalked up our first win after two draws on the spin, with a narrow 1-0 win over Gainsborough. A solid display from Talia Wilcox and Owen set up the victory, with Joe Lee scoring from distance to win the game. We finished with the hardest two fixtures of the day: Mablins A and Wistaston Academy. Mablins A proved to be too strong in a 4-1 loss. The best performance came against Wistaston Academy, where the team battled really hard against a good team. We played some great netball, winning the ball back and passing with some speed and accuracy. Joe got us on the scoresheet at 1-1 before Wistaston edged 3-1 ahead. Aaliyah then scored with the shot of the

day, as she scored from near the edge of the D to put us within one goal. We pushed and pushed for an equaliser but couldn't find a way through at the end. There were some outstanding performances in the competition from players in both teams. Trinity Palin and Ashton Degnen were the players of the competition for the two teams- both were in fantastic goalscoring form and also did their bit defensively for the team.

BRIERLEY SPORTS

Year 3 and Year 4 went to Manchester Metropolitan University Crewe Campus on Thursday 15th February for a PE afternoon. The trip was

organised as part of our continued relationship with MMU, in which our pupils were taught by student PE teachers in the fantastic sports facility on site. Our pupils were taught a variety of different throwing and catching games which fitted in nicely with the Netball lessons the pupils have had this half term in PE. All of the pupils worked extremely hard during the session and their behaviour and attitude was fantastic- the staff from the University also commented on how talented the children were! It was a really good experience for our pupils and one they thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you to MMU for allowing our pupils to visit and thank you to the staff and parent helpers who accompanied the pupils on the trip.

Well done to both squads on a much improved performance in this competition and for playing some good netball. Brierley A finished in 3rd position and Brierley B finished in 5th position overall.

Brierley A: Nicola Slupska (c), Bradley Wilkins, Trinity Palin, Matthew Thompson, Tahlia Clark, Marcel Krawczyk and Angel Biddle. Brierley B: Aaliyah Wilson (c), Joe Lee, Owen Harvey, Shekinah Marembo, Talia Wilcox, Ashton Degnen and Darja Kozina.

Thank you Mrs Proudman for helping with the teams and to all the parents who came to support.
