adult Nymph- a young insect in stage where it

looks like a young adult Chrysalis- another name for pupa stage Molt- shed Instars- larva stages

Lesson 6 Notes

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pieris rapae

1. INCOMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS 3 stages

2. COMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS 4 stages

Two Types of Metamorphosis

3 STAGES OF- INCOMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS

Page 5: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

EGG

A female insect lays eggs

Eggs are often covered by an egg case which protects and holds them together

Page 6: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

NYMPH

Nymphs do look like small adults, but usually don't have wings.

Nymphs molt (shed) their exoskeletons and replace them with larger ones several times as they grow

Most nymphs molt 4-8 times.

Page 7: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

ADULT

Insects stop molting when they reach their adult size.

By this time, they have also grown wings.

4 STAGES OF- COMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS

Page 9: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

EGG

The female lays eggs

Usually found on the undersurfaces of leaves.

Page 10: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

LARVA

Larva hatch from the eggs Do not look like adult insects. Worm-like shape. Larvae molt several times and grow slightly larger.

Caterpillars, maggots, and grubs are all just the larval stages of insects

Page 11: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

PUPA Larva make cocoons around themselves.

Don't eat while inside their cocoons

Also known as Chrysalis

Dormant during pupa stage

Their bodies develop into an adult shape with wings, legs, internal organs, etc.

This change takes anywhere from 4 days to many months.

Page 12: Metamorphosis- a change in form from one stage to the next of an insect Larva-worm like stage of insects Pupa-stage where insect turns from larva

ADULT

Inside the cocoon, the larvae change into adults

After a period of time, the adult breaks out of the cocoon.

I. Life Cycle

A. Process called Metamorphisisi. a profound change in form from one stage to

the next in the life history of an organismii. Temperature effects how quickly

metamorphosis occurs

B. Egg Larva Pupa Adulti. Pupal Stage also known as Chrysalisii. Dormant during pupal stage

A. L1-L5 B. Determined by taking head measurementC. Eats Mustard Family (EX: WFP)D. Molts 2-3 times in first week of hatchingE. L1

i. Larva chews way out of eggii. Head grows slowly as body grows large

F. L2-L5i. L4&L5: Most eating occurs here

II. Larval Stages (Instars)

A. 3 part bodyi. Head, thorax, abdomen

B. Proboscis: mouth; take in water and nutrients i. Length varies between species and types of

flowers that are their primary food source

C. Antennae: sensory structure to find foodD. Hair-like structures: sense of tasteE. Claws: to cling to surfacesF. Scales: pigment and insulationG. Spiracles: Facilitate gas exchange

A. Sexual Reproduction i. Requires male and female parent

B. Males: i. 1 black spot on inner wing

C. Females:i. 2 black sposts on inner wingii. Abdomen larger than males to hold eggs

B. Frass: wastei. Used as fertilizer

C. Open Circulatory SystemD. Floral nectar primary food sourceE. Exoskeleton color due to amount of

sunlight CWB is exposed to

Adults can emerge from pupa in 1 minute

Wings take 15 minutes to expand

Wings take 1-2 hours to harden so they can fly
