Guest EditorialWRPS Continues to Invest in
Local-Area Small BusinessesBy Haley Taylor, Small Business Program Manager, Washington River Protection Solutions
For the second time during its contract to manage Hanford tank waste, Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) has been awarded the national DOE Mentor of the Year by the U.S. Department of Energy. The award recognizes leadership in mentoring local small businesses and was presented to WRPS in May by the DOE Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization. WRPS also received the award in 2012. Through its mentor-protégé program, WRPS partners with small businesses to create long-lasting relationships, share best practices and lessons learned, and enhance companies’ ability to successfully compete for federal contracts. We take every opportunity to introduce protégés to other corporate resources and affiliates and assist them in establishing business relationships with necessary suppliers.
Participation in the mentor-protégé program is one demonstration of WRPS’ commitment to Tri-City small businesses. We recognize the services and goods provided by local businesses are critical to accomplishing our mission. That’s why, during the course of our Hanford cleanup contract, since 2008, WRPS has awarded more than $960 million to area small businesses. That’s critical to cleanup, but it also means jobs and taxes that support our community’s overall infrastructure and help create a positive quality of life for us all.
WRPS has worked with the Chamber on sponsoring the Meet the Buyer program. Every quarter program sessions are presented free of charge and offer businesses opportunities to hear from procurement officials from a wide variety of local resources in the region.
The next session will focus on how your business can partner with WRPS or other Hanford prime contractors and will take place on July 12. Admission is free. Space is limited to two per company. To learn more and register to attend, contact Ashley Coronado at 509.491.3231 or [email protected].

Director level members City of Kennewick, City of Richland, Mission Support Alliance and the Tri-City Herald, and Executive-level member, City of West Richland, recently renewed their membership with the Chamber.
Our Government Affairs Director testified before the House Technology & Economic Development Committee in support of SB 5232, which would allow federal hydro efficiency improvement to count as an eligible renewable resource.
The recent Meet the Buyer program was attended by 30 business representatives who learned how to sell to the local transit systems and be better prepared to take part in the government marketplace.
During the first quarter, our PTAC Counselor assisted small businesses within the six county region in receiving over $1.4 million in government contracts.
We’ve recently welcomed Karen Livas to the Chamber team as Small Business Programs Director.

The 2017 election cycle will be a very busy one with 21 seats in city governments on the ballot this year. These races are very important to the future of our economy and region. To help inform our members, the Regional Chamber will once again publish a City Council Candidate Questionnaire so business owners can better understand where candidates stand on the issues. All candidates that have filed for city council races will be invited to submit their feedback, with full responses being shared on the Chamber website and social media in July just before primary ballots are mailed. For more information on which city council seats will be on the ballot, visit www.tricityregionalchamber.com.
While the Washington State Legislature continues to work overtime on budget negotiations for the 2017-19 biennium and a long term funding solution for basic education, legislators are also discussing paid family leave legislation. In November 2016, voters approved Initiative 1433, which raises the statewide minimum wage to $13.50 per hour by 2020 and also requires employers to provide their employees with seven sick days per year (with employers accruing one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked).
A bipartisan group of lawmakers, along with a diverse coalition of business groups led by the Association of Washington Business (AWB), have been meeting throughout the year to negotiate write a paid family leave bill that would benefit employers and workers. Talks are ongoing, and as more information is available, the Regional Chamber will provide updates to all members in the days and weeks ahead. For more information on this and other issues, check out the Policy News & Action Alerts on the Regional Chamber’s website at www.tricityregionalchamber.com.
