This is Ordinary Time, the long green and growing season when Christ nourishes the seeds planted at

Easter and puts down roots in our faith.

Gathering The Spirit calls us together

Pre-Service Music

Hejre Kati J. Hubay Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen.

Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)

Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God ☩ forgives you all your sins. Amen.

Entrance Hymn ELW #669 Rise Up, O Saints of God

Greeting and Prayer of the Day

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. And also with you.

Let us pray.

(Silence)

God of compassion, you have opened the way for us and brought us to yourself. Pour your love into our hearts, that, overflowing with joy, we may freely share the blessings of your realm and faithfully proclaim the good news of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Word

God speaks to us First Lesson: Exodus 19:2-8a

[The Israelites] had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God; the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.” So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. The people all answered as one: “Everything that the LORD has spoken we will do.”

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 100 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, | all you lands! Serve the LORD with gladness; come into God’s presence | with a song. Know that the LORD is God, our maker to whom | we belong; we are God’s people and the sheep | of God’s pasture. Enter the gates of the LORD with thanksgiving and the | courts with praise; give thanks and bless God’s | holy name. Good indeed is the LORD, whose steadfast love is | everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from | age to age.

Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-8

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Gospel: Matthew 9:35--10:8-23 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day ELW #661 I Love to Tell the Story

Prayers of the People

Response: Hear our prayer Sharing the Peace of Christ Parish Concerns

Meal

Preparation of the Table and Offering of Gifts

Jesus Savior, Pilot Me Text: E. Hopper; Music: J. E. Gould Offering Prayer

Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God.

The universe declares your praise: beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God.

Generations bless your faithfulness: through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God.

We give you thanks for your dear Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

Page 8: + Lectionary 11 - Phinney Ridge Lutheran Churchprlc.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/2017-06-18-Lectionary-11.pdf · Hejre Kati J. Hubay Confession and Forgiveness All may

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table, and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We pray for the gift of your Spirit: in our gathering; within this meal; among your people; throughout the world. Blessing, praise, and thanks to you, holy God, through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit, in your church, without end. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Sharing Bread and Cup

The Risen Christ feeds us his very Body and Blood as bread and wine. Please come forward to gather around the rails at the direction of the ushers. You may eat the bread and drink from the cup, or dip the bread into the cup. The large cup is filled with wine. The smaller cup is filled with grape juice. Travelling ministers will commune those who are unable to come forward.

If you prefer to receive a blessing instead of receiving communion, please come forward with your hand over your heart. Gluten-free wafers are available. If this is your need, ask the server.

Prayers and anointing for healing are offered in the Chapel, located directly across the communion table. If you would like to pray for yourself or others, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. You may receive healing prayers before or after receiving communion. Communion Music

Prayer after Communion

Let us pray

(Silence)

Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen.

Announcements The annual Seattle Pride Parade is on Sunday, June 25th and a group from our congregation is participating again this year. We will join the “Loving Lutherans of the Northwest Synod” as we march in support of the LGBTQ community and proclaim God’s love for everyone. We will leave from the church at 10:00 a.m. to carpool or bus downtown to get to the parade starting point. It is not necessary to commit to walking the entire parade route. Some folks gather with us at the staging area (along 4th Ave) and leave the parade before we reach the Seattle Center, others join us en route. We hope to have a large showing from Phinney at our first march as an official RIC congregation! Please mark your interest on this morning’s Count Me In.

Greenwood Car Show Pulls Up to PRLC this Saturday: The Car Show on Saturday, June 24th, delivers to our front door one of the largest street fairs in the state! What an opportunity to engage our beautiful city, and share the gift of warm hospitality with thousands. Plans are in the works for live music on our front lawn, and as always we'll have treats and refreshments for all visitors. We rely on your volunteer help to greet visitors, pass out treats, and donate cookies. Mark your count me in form if interested. We'll need lots of help!

Come join us for this original musical celebrating the Seattle World's Fair of 1962. Fun for the whole family! Becoming RainWise You’ve probably seen the big plastic cistern on the back of the building, right outside the Fireside Room window, and may have wondered about it. Your congregation council has been learning the last few months about a professionally designed proposal to collect rainwater from our roofs and to re-direct it into cisterns and a raingarden, as part of the “RainWise” program. Sponsored by Seattle Public Utilities and King County, this program offers substantial rebates for building owners who install rain-collecting systems in order to keep run-off out of the sewers during big storm events. (Remember the West Point Sewer Treatment Plant disaster?!)

Installing a raingarden is a responsible thing to do, and would be cost-neutral for PRLC due to the rebates. You may have noticed signs in some of your neighbors’ yards – think of how much more positive impact we can have with the size of our building!

The sample cistern is on loan for just another week, if you’d like to have a look at it. Several like it (though in a different color, more of an earth tone) and larger would be part of the proposed design. Feel free to talk to a council member or to Parish Administrator Kirsten Olshausen if you would like more information!

We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us.

Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. (If you prefer to have your child with you in worship, but are worried that they might disturb the service, we also have a crying room upstairs in the balcony.)

Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addi-tion to Men’s and Women’s rooms there is also a Family room with a chang-ing table.

Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special “sign ups” you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service.

Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to pro-vide information about our church and to receive information such as ad-dress, phone or email changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the “check in desk” in the church gathering area.

Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at www.prlc.org for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportuni-ties for service and study.

Join us again! We worship every Sunday in the summer at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often.
