A relay is an electrical switch which uses low wattage current to open another switch. It is this second switch that carriesand switches the high wattage current. This second switch can be normally open, normally closed or offering a changeoverfacility such as headlamp dip. They are a very useful safety device to have on high wattage circuits on your car. Users of classic cars nowadays want to fit more and more electrical and electronicequipment, radios, CD players, spotlamps and heaters and reach the point wherethe original dynamo with its output of about 20 amps can’t keep up. If you are running with the lights, wipers, heater etc. on it is probable that your Lucas dynamois struggling to keep the battery properly charged for the next time you want tostart the engine. Modern cars overcome this by using an alternator to meet thelarger electrical demand. The Dynalite is such an alternator which will give 80%more power (about 40 amps) than a dynamo and the remarkable thing is that itLOOKS JUST LIKE AN ORIGINAL LUCAS DYNAMO thus maintaining the originalunderbonnet appearance. It even uses original Lucas end castings. It comes withfull instructions for fitting, which may involve simple machining to make your pulleyfit, and full wiring instructions which are quite simple or you can buy a new ControlBox. The Company that makes the Dynalites has developed replacements for many original Lucas starters. Their approach has been slightly different in that theysought to offer something much better than the original. The result is a high performance geared motor which positively engages the pinion into the flywheelelectrically and produces a huge increase in cranking power to start the engineunder all conditions, even with a higher compression ratio. In addition the gearingmeans it draws less current. It uses aluminium castings and is beautifully made.In developing starter motors for individual applications special attention has beenpaid to make them easier to install. poWerlite Starter motor ConneCtor

For Powerlite Starter Motors that have a built-in solenoid connected to the ignition key or starterbutton on your car. The connector for this is situated on the side of the starter motor and comprisesa 6.4mm Lucar spade terminal. You can connect to this using a standard Straight Lucar Connector(refer to 080.325). However, the proper way to make this connection is to use the two parts supplied under this Part No.. You crimp/solder the connector to the wire and slide it into the cover.(You push the connector into the end opposite to the clip). It is important that correct wire sizes and connectors are used for linking together all the electrical equipment on your car.The wire size for any circuit is determined by a combination of factors, including the length of the wire, the current flowingand the permissible voltage drop. If the wire is too thin it can cause a serious voltage drop from one end of the wire to theother, together with overheating. To ensure reliability, it is most important that correctly rated wires are used for all circuits.When in doubt, always use a thicker wire size, especially for long runs. To provide flexibility for motor vehicle applications thewires we offer have a number of thin strands rather than a single thicker strand. For example, 14/0.30 mm has 14 strands ofwire, each strand 0.30 mm diameter. Wires are rated for their current carrying capacity, and colour coded for identification.Most British designed vehicles use colour coding in accordance with a British Standard, and in the table below we have included the coding based on the Standard. To obtain the best results, at each end of each wire the connector should be securely crimped or soldered to the wire conductor, and a protective sleeve should be used wherever possible. In the tableswe list the more popular sizes of PVC insulated wire
