HEICHAL’S

Affordable EducationThe Yeshiva employs innovative educational tools to create a high caliber, yet affordable education. Financial aid is available for those who qualify through a confidential and straightforward financial aid process.

HEICHAL’S

MISSION

Passionate Judaism Heichal HaTorah’s first goal is to inspire our talmidim toward greater Yiras Shamayim: to love Torah learning, to daven passionately, and to develop noble character.

Developing Talmidei ChachamimThe Yeshiva’s second goal is to place our talmidim on the path to becoming Talmidei Chachamim, with the ability to read and analyze the Gemara with Rishonim and Acharonim. Additionally, we expect them to master an entire Masechta each year, culminating in a grand siyum to celebrate their achievement.

Future Professionals and Jewish LeadersThe Yeshiva’s third goal is for all students to receive a first-rate general studies education in order to prepare them for their college studies and future careers. The general studies faculty is composed of dynamic and seasoned educators with advanced degrees in their areas of expertise. Heichal offers multiple tracks for each subject, ranging from entry level courses to Advanced Placement courses, to ensure that each student is challenged and engaged in every class.

An Environment for Healthy GrowthThe Yeshiva is located at the Jewish Center of Teaneck, which includes a large and beautifully refurbished beis medrash and seforim library, modern classrooms and a state-of-the-art science lab. The talmidim have numerous opportunities to use our recreational facilities, which include a professional-size basketball gym, fitness gym, student lounge and pool.

FACULTY

HEICHAL

LIMMUD HATORAH

We believe that our role as Rabbeim is to help our talmidim uncover their potential. We set high expectations and give them the skills to realize those expectations. During each seder,

Heichal talmidim amass significant amounts of knowledge (bekius), acquire advanced reading and textual skills (leining), and formulate key concepts (lomdus).

Gemara IyunOur talmidim study a challenging masechta each year with the goal of learning the skills necessary to “make a leining” on Gemara, Rashi, Tosafos, and other major Rishonim and Acharonim. Talmidim are trained to analyze the implication of each word and explore the conceptual underpinnings of the sugya. Significant time is allotted to chavrusah learning, as talmidim prepare for and review the shiur.

Gemara BekiusA second masehcta is chosen for bekius learning. Our goal is for each talmid not merely to finish, but to master the masechta. Talmidim take regular bechinos on dapim and periodically on entire perakim. Ultimately, they review the entire masechta, culminating in a masechta bechinah. Talmidim of the Yeshiva have finished Masechtos Kiddushin, Rosh Hashanah, Megillah and Succah. There is no prouder moment than when our talmidim stand at the end of the year, before family and neighbors, and say the Hadran on the masechtos that they learned.

HalachahEvery morning, after davening, the talmidim begin their day with a twenty-minute seder in Halachah. Over four years, we endeavor to finish the entire Kitzur Shulchan Aruch and Kitzur Hilchos Shabbos in order to provide each talmid with the requisite knowledge to be a scrupulous shomer Torah u’mitzvos.

ChumashEvery day, Heichal talmidim learn the Parshas Hashavuah with Rashi. Additionally, our Rabbeim work with them on reading other Rishonim, such as the Ramban. Each shiur highlights how the Chumash should inform and inspire our daily Avodas Hashem.

Night SederDuring night seder, on Monday and Thursday nights, from 6:55 to 7:55 PM, the talmidim are divided into chaburos led by older mentors, all of whom are currently studying for Semichah. These mentors help the talmidim delve deeper into the masechtos they are learning during bekius seder. These mentors greatly enhance the Yeshiva environment, serving as role models and joining the Yeshiva on trips and Shabbatonim.

HEICHAL

INSPIRATION

LIMMUD HATORAH

HEICHAL

INSPIRATION

Special ConcertsOur annual kumsitz with Yosef Karduner and Purim chagigah with Eitan Katz afford the talmidim the opportunity to open their hearts and sing to Hashem. Through heartfelt niggunim and leibedik dancing, our talmidim feel a renewed excitement and commitment to their Avodas Hashem.

Thursday Night TischesEvery Thursday night the talmidim hear inspirational Divrei Torah from Rav Moshe Tzvi Weinberg, frequently accompanied with scrumptious chulent and singing.

ShabbosSeveral times over the course of the year, the Yeshiva gathers together in Monsey, Passaic, or Bergenfield for an “In-Shabbos.” The davening, meals, onegs and sedarim of these weekends create an exciting and fun environment for the talmidim to bond with their Rabbeim and each other.

Additionally, twice a year, the entire yeshiva travels to a special location for a Shabbos of fun and inspiration. Whether in the mountains or in a giant mansion, the change of scenery and fresh air inspire the talmidim to build a more meaningful connection to Hashem. Highlights of the Shabbatonim include, lively singing at Kabbalas Shabbos

and the tisch, leibedik dancing at the melaveh malkah, words of inspiration from the Rosh Yeshiva and Rabbeim, a barbecue, hikes and serious football tournaments.

All of our Rabbeim live in the same communities as the talmidim. This allows for a deeper connection between the Rabbeim and the talmidim and their families. Rabbeim often invite the talmidim over for Shabbos meals.

Mussar A mussar seder before both Minchah and Maariv inspires our students to daven with kavanah and intensity. Additionally, mussar focuses on the development of each talmid’s character and stresses the importance of derech eretz. Our mussar sedarim focus on seforim that teach mussar in a positive and warm manner. Most days one mussar seder will be used as an opportunity for a Rebbe or guest Rebbe to offer words of inspiration.

PersonableHeichal provides a close-knit Yeshiva environment, where each talmid has a meaningful relationship with his Rebbe. These relationships encourage each student to feel that he is important and inspire him to emulate the fine middos and heartfelt Yiras Shamayim of his Rabbeim.

We believe that the key measure of a talmid’s success is his love for learning and Avodas Hashem. We hope to instill ahavah and excitement for Yiddishkeit in each and every talmid.

HEICHAL

GENERAL STUDIESHeichal HaTorah offers a rigorous and challenging four-year general studies program which focuses on

core courses in English, History, Math and Science and which is based on a vision of what an educated high school graduate should know and be able to do. All of our courses are designed to foster the development of crucial academic skills, that is, the ability to acquire, analyze, synthesize and articulate knowledge. As

students progress through the grades they are exposed to increasingly sophisticated methods of organizing and using acquired knowledge, and they learn to present that knowledge coherently both orally and on

paper. Heichal’s general studies curriculum meets the requirements of selective colleges and exceeds the New Jersey State Requirements for High School Education. The curriculum has been designed with careful attention to the standardized tests required for college admissions and to the requirements of the colleges to which our students will be applying. Advanced Placement courses are offered in all four disciplines. Classes

are tracked to meet the needs of different leaning styles and abilities.

MathematicsThe math program is designed to meet students’ needs within the wide range of their math backgrounds. In all courses, students are given the opportunity to work at a comfortable yet challenging level. All students are exposed to all the necessary requirements for success in college math. Ninth graders begin with Geometry and, depending on math courses taken in middle school and on mathematical ability, move on to either Algebra I or Algebra II in tenth grade. Eleventh graders study Algebra II or Pre-Calculus. Twelfth graders take either AP Calculus or Finite Math. The math department is current with the math topics covered in the ACT and the new SAT, and will adjust as necessary.

EnglishEnglish courses are designed to help students develop critical reading and writing skills and the ability to write clearly and correctly. Students are exposed to the best of classical and contemporary literature and to articles and works of non-fiction which they analyze, discuss and write about throughout their high school years. The primary focus of the department, however, is on writing and communication skills. Our strongest readers and writers are prepared to take the AP Language & Composition Exam.

GENERAL STUDIES

ScienceStudents study Biology in ninth grade, Chemistry in tenth grade, and Physics in eleventh grade. Students in the honor sections of these classes are prepared to take an SAT subject test in June. Our strongest science students will take an Advanced Placement course in one of the sciences in Grade Twelve. Other students will have the opportunity to take a fourth year of science or an appropriate elective. Our goal is to move beyond the facts and figures presented in the textbooks and to teach our students to be critical thinkers. In an age of daily scientific advancement, it is imperative that we help our students achieve the scientific literacy that they will need to participate in intelligent discussions of science and technology, to understand the implications of technological advancements and, as adults, to make informed choices about scientific matters that, undoubtedly, will affect their daily lives.

HistoryThe history program is designed to help students understand how we came to be as twenty-first century Jews, Americans, Westerners, and citizens of the world. Throughout the history curriculum, great emphasis is placed on the development of writing and researching skills, as well as the ability to extract both information and concepts from the text. Students begin with Ancient & Classical History in ninth grade, move on to a two-year sequence in American History (which includes, when appropriate, both the AP Exam and the SAT subject test), and then study Modern European History in twelfth grade.

College GuidanceBeginning in junior year, Rabbi Malavsky meets personally with each student and his parents to determine his goals for college acceptance and scholarship opportunities. Pulling from his three decades in high school leadership, Rabbi Malavsky crafts a personal plan to aid each student to meet his goals. This includes advice on standardized testing success, the application process, and extracurricular activities.

HEICHAL

SENIOR PROGRAM

Beis Medrash Iyun Shiur Heichal seniors are offered an advanced beis medrash-level in-depth iyun seder under the direction of Rav Komet from 9:15 am until noon. The talmidim spend most of morning seder learning bechavrusah to prepare for shiur, focusing on an analysis of the sugya and in-depth examination of the classic Talmudic commentaries. Rav Komet then gives shiur every day for the final 45 minutes of seder. Talmidim are accepted into this shiur based upon demonstrated abilities and commitment to a high level of learning. All other senior talmidim are placed in one of three other iyun shiurim—Honors Iyun, Intermediate Iyun or Basic Iyun.

Masechta Mastery ElectiveTalmidim accepted into this optional beis medrash program learn a separate masechta during bekius seder and night seder. During the second period of the General Studies program, a bekius shiur covering material learned during bekius seder is given by one of our dedicated Rabbeim. By year’s end, the talmidim will have learned the entire masechta and mastered numerous “halachah lema’aseh” sugyas relevant to the masechta. Our talmidim also learn these topics in the Mishnah Berurah during their morning halachah seder, learning practical halachah in these areas.

Voluntary Additional Night SederSeniors are encouraged to stay after Maariv on Thursday nights, from 8:15 - 9:00 PM, for an optional mishmar. The Masechta Mastery program continues at this time, but all Heichal talmidim are invited and encouraged to stay and learn. As in the past, refreshments will be served. Our Night Seder Rebbe will be available during this time to answer questions and guide the learning.

Limudei Kodesh: Transitioning to the Yeshiva Gedolah ExperienceFor the first three years, we endeavor to inspire and train our talmidim to learn independently in a beis medrash setting, and to give them the skills to study and analyze Gemara with Rishonim and

Acharonim. For the twelfth grade, we focus on preparing our talmidim to seamlessly enter the finest yeshivos at the yeshiva gedolah level. Towards this end, we have carefully constructed a special senior program which includes a beis medrash-level iyun shiur, a “Masechta Mastery” elective, and a weekly

extended night seder program.

SENIOR PROGRAM

Advanced Placement CoursesStudents can be accepted into AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP English Language and Literature. AP Chemistry, AP European and US History are offered in tenth and eleventh grades.

Senior Electives Business Math: Students not taking AP Calculus take Business Math. This is a two-semester course wherein students learn to use mathematics effectively as a tool in their personal and business lives. After students have completed this course, they are able to apply mathematical concepts to various personal and business situations, such as computing interest rates, job costing, merchandising, payroll, credit, taxes, insurance, and global business and investments.

Forensics: Students not taking AP Physics will take Forensics. Forensic science is the application of science to the law and encompasses various scientific disciplines. This course introduces various methodologies and applications used in the forensic context. Topics discussed include organic and inorganic chemical analyses of physical evidence, principles of serology and DNA analysis, ballistics, arson, fingerprint analysis, drug analysis and document examination.

School-wide Electives Numerous other electives are offered to seniors and open to other students during the break hours. These courses run once or twice a week. These electives are only offered when there is significant interest. Possible electives include: Coding, Jewish History, Navi, and Ulpan– Hebrew Immersion.

The Future Begins Now: Receiving College Credit as a Heichal Senior Heichal participates in Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Middle College Program, which allows students to earn college credits while taking high school classes at Heichal. Faculty from FDU, upon invitation from Heichal, visit and deliver guest lectures during the academic year.

Israel GuidanceDuring the course of the year, Rav Stechler works closely with various yeshivos in Israel to evaluate their suitability for our talmidim. Heichal allows selected yeshiva representatives the opportunity to speak to our talmidim about the strengths of their yeshivos. It is the policy of Heichal not to promote any specific yeshiva to our talmidim. Rather, our role is to help our talmidim and their parents find the best fit to for their educational needs, learning style and hashkafic outlook. Heichal also believes that each talmid and his parents should consider whether learning in Israel for the following year is in the talmid’s best interest. To that end, we will invite yeshivos in America to discuss their first year beis medrash programs with our talmidim.

College GuidanceRabbi Ronnie Malavsky oversees the college guidance department. Once the school year begins, a great deal of information starts to flow to the parents and students to make sure they are fully informed about the entire college application procedure. Individual meetings are set with each student and his parents to discuss options and to answer any questions. SAT and ACT information manuals are distributed which allows you to better decide which standardized test is best for your son.

General Studies: College Level Courses and Exciting ElectivesThroughout your son’s first three years at Heichal, he is continuously challenged and given a thorough general studies education to prepare him for college-level work. During his senior year, he will have the opportunity to take college-level courses, receive college credit and pursue exciting electives.

HEICHAL

EXTRA-CURRICULARS

Because our students work so diligently on their Torah and academic studies, we provide social and recreational programs to make every day an exciting day at Heichal.

RecreationEach day, talmidim enjoy exercising and playing ball in our professional-size gym and playing ping pong in the student lounge during lunch, the afternoon break period and during dinner. Students work out in the fitness gym daily and swim in our pool twice a week.

TripsThe Yeshiva goes on numerous trips, which serve to create a social environment that fosters friendship and camaraderie among the talmidim and Rabbeim. This year, on the second day of yeshiva, the talmidim travelled to the Lehigh River for the annual opening of the year rafting trip. As the talmidim paddled down the river, they became acquainted with their new chaveirim and Rabbeim. During the winter months, the talmidim head to Hunter Mountain for skiing and snowtubing. On Lag BaOmer, the talmidim play sports in Teaneck’s Votee Park. The Yeshiva also rents out entire water-parks and amusement-parks for the Yeshiva to enjoy for the day.

ChesedWhether davening together, laughing together or dancing together, the Heichal talmidim love spending quality time with our Yachad friends, who share our Yeshiva building. Other chesed projects include volunteering for Nefesh B’Nefesh to assist people making Aliyah, visiting the elderly at CareOne, and helping Yad Leah package lifts of clothing to send to Israel for those in need.

Jewish HistoryOn Yom HaShoah, the Yeshiva invites survivors to discuss their personal experiences during the Shoah and their miraculous stories of survival. On Yom HaAtzmaut, the Yeshiva invites Israeli soldiers to discuss their wartime missions and the Yad Hashem they experienced during their service.

We coordinate community-wide events, such as our Siyum Hashas which took place once at our annual dinner; our Hei-Chol beis medrash program during bein hazemanim, in concert with Cong. Beth Abraham in Bergenfield; and our much-anticipated Purim night mesibah, which is the largest of its kind in our area and attended by hundreds of people representing a cross-section of Bergen County Jewry.
