DEAR LITTLE CHAPEL FAMILY, Most of you know that we are entering into my very favorite time of year. I love the season of Advent. I feel that way about it in part due to the preparation...the getting ready. The anticipation of what is to come. I enjoy seeing the decorations go up, and especially the lights. Oh how I love the lights. Any doubt...come by the manse anytime from Thanksgiving Day on and see what I am talking about. That is also why the Hanging of the Greens worship service that we are going to have on the first Sunday of Advent at the 10:30 service is so special to me. The preparation, I enjoy it all. And as much as I enjoy it, I, like many pastors have preached sermons warning that the commercialization of Christmas can overshadow the true meaning. I have talked about how gift buying can leave us drained physically, emotionally, and financially. I have pointed out that the gifts are sometime gimmicks with strings attached, used to deceive and manipulate. Nevertheless, I have to come clean and say that I am glad we give gifts at Christmas time. Gifts given for the right reasons can be wonderful symbols. They express our appreciation, admiration, and affection far better than words sometimes can. What more appropriate way to show appreciation to God—the giver of every good and perfect gift– than giving gifts to those we love. A few years ago I received the following e-mail. It is long...but says more profoundly than I can about the season of Advent and Christmas. Read and enjoy, and I hope this season brings you many, many blessings,

Pastor Pat A letter from Jesus about Christmas

Dear friends, It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking my name out of the season. How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own. I don’t care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate my birth, just get along and love one another! Now having said that let me go on. If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn’t allow a scene depicting my birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santa's and snowmen and put in a small Nativity scene on your front lawn. If all my followers did that there wouldn’t be any need for such a scene on the town square, because there would be many of them all around town. Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a holiday tree, instead of a Christmas tree. It was I who made all trees. You can remember me anytime you see any tree. Decorate a grapevine if you wish: I actually spoke of that one in a teaching, explaining who I am in relation to you and what each of our tasks was. If you have forgotten that one, look up

John 15:1-8. If you want to give me a present as a remembrance of my birth, here is my wish list. Choose a thing or two from it. Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way my birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are afraid and lonely this time of year. Visit someone in a nursing home. You don’t have to know them personally. They just need to know that someone cares about them. Instead of writing the President complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sent out this year, why don’t you write and tell him that you’ll be praying for him and his family this year. Then follow up...It will be nice hearing from you again. Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you cannot afford and they don’t need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of my birth, and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that I love them. Pick someone that has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her. Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don’t know who that person is, try giving everyone you meet a warm smile; it could make the difference. Instead of nit picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren’t allowed to wish you a “Merry Christmas” that doesn’t keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store did not make so much money on that day, they’d close and let their employees spend the day at home with their families. If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary - especially one who takes my love and the Good News to those who have never heard my name. Here’s a good one. There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no Christmas tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don’t know them, buy some food and a few gifts and give them to the Salvation Army or some other charity which believes in me and they will make the delivery for you. Finally, if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to me, then behave like a Christian. Don’t do things in secret that you wouldn’t do in my presence. Let people know by your actions that you are one of mine. Don’t forget; I am God and can take care of myself. Just love me and do what I have told you to do. I’ll take care of all the rest. Check out the list above and get to work; time is short. I’ll help you, but the ball is now in your court. And do have a most blessed Christmas with all those whom you love and remember: I love you, Jesus

HARPSICHORD RECITAL CDS

CDs of David’s November 11th harpsichord recital are available in the church office. Thanks to Jim Bolick for recording the event and to Tim Karp for making the master CD. Please note that the CD is unedited and contains not only the music, but the narrative portions of the evening. What a great night it was and a big “Thank You” to the Ladies Circles for the wonderful reception following the concert. A special “Thank You” to Ted Heinzman for moving the harpsichord (which he has been doing for the last 25 years!).

CHANCEL CHOIR Chancel Choir will be off on Sunday December 27 and no rehearsal Thursday December 31. Choir will resume weekly rehearsals on Thursday January 7, 2016 at 7 PM in the choir room.

CANTATA SUNDAY DECEMBER 13

LOVE CAME DOWN AT CHRISTMAS

Back by popular request, Love Came Down at Christ-mas will be repeated on Sunday December 13, 2015 at the 10:30 a.m. service. Our Chancel Choir, Youth Choir, Chamber Ensemble and guest concert pianist Stephen Field will be under the direction of David Lee Heinzman. Composed by Joel Raney, the inspiration for this cantata was Christina Rossetti’s 1885 poem, Love Came Down at Christmas, a poem which has remarkably survived with-out being attached to a specific melody. Lines from this classic poem are scattered throughout the cantata, which incorporates original music as well as many familiar Christmas carols. There are four main sections corre-sponding to the four prominent themes of Advent – Hope, Peace, Joy and Love - each section being intro-duced through narration.

Note: There will be no music fellowship dinner in December due to Christmas Celebrations

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

Ding Dong, Merrily On High, The Christmas Bells Are Ringing!

Bells ringing is one of my favorite sounds of the Christ-mas season, along with the scents of all the wonderful dishes that are lovingly shared around the table. They are all gifts.

But then I stop and think of all the people who will not hear the merry sound of bells or smell the scents of Christmas or receive a gift offered with love.

Once again this year the Little Chapel will deliver bells ringing, the scents of Christmas and a gift to many of our neighbors who are alone on Christmas Day. It all happens because of wonderful people; people like Jean Schild and Shirlee Gearhart who had headed up the team for several years and, I'm so happy to tell you, like Janice Willetts and John Moore who have agreed to step into those shoes and coordinate the meal and the drivers this year! What joy their efforts will bring!

Now comes the challenge to all the rest of us. Will you help with the sweet potatoes, dressing and cakes that need to be joyfully made? Will you contribute gifts lov-ingly tucked into shoeboxes and gaily wrapped? Will you be one of the drivers on Christmas morning that rings the bells of Christmas and delivers the joy?

What a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of that very special Gift, Jesus!

CHRISTMAS DAY MEALS-ON-WHEELS

Once again our church will participate in Christmas Day Meals-on-Wheels. Volunteers are needed to cook, prepare and serve the meals, and drivers are needed to deliver these meals. Sign-up sheets and instructions will be available soon.

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX GIFTS

For more years than most of us can count, members of LCOB have prepared and delivered Meals on Wheels on Christmas morning to neighbors in need, before cele-brating with their own families and neighbors. This mis-sion of our church is rewarding both to the givers and recipients, but the Little Chapel with the Big Heart goes a step further. We see to it that every meal is delivered with a lovingly wrapped shoebox, filled with small sun-dries and treats.

Please consider this a way that YOU can make a differ-ence! Empty boxes are available in the fellowship hall to help you start spreading the joy of the season. Please re-turn your filled and wrapped shoe boxes on or before Sun-day, December 13 and apply one of the provided labels for male/female/either. We will need about 70 of these gift boxes to accompany our meals. Below are a few gift ideas for your shoe box gift:

Thank you for your generous support for these gifts which may be the only ones some friends in our com-munity receive for Christmas.

BLANKET OFFERING

Christmas is just a little bit more special at Little Chapel because of The Blanket Offering. Contri-butions to CWS Blankets mean Church World Service will be ready to help families around the world recover from disasters and displacement. What’s more, we’ll be there to help people gain the resources and develop the skills necessary to build or rebuild sustainable lives and communities.

Did you know $250 can provide warm blankets for five families left homeless by a tornado? This is one exam-ple of how your gift can help others around the world. When we give to help others around the globe, we feel more connected to the rest of the world.

Please give generously. Thank you!

POINSETTIA CROSS MISSION

The poinsettia cross will be up for the first Sunday of Advent, November 29 when we have “The Hanging of the Greens” and remain up through January 4, 2016. If you would like to make a donation to honor someone or in someone’s memory you may do so for a $10.00 donation. These names will be listed in the Christmas Eve bulletin. Starting in 2012 we began using permanent poinsettias. In lieu of purchasing a fresh poinsettia, the donations will go to support the Christmas Day Meals on Wheels Mission this year. The Flower Fund is an unbudgeted item. It is an in and out fund. The only funds for deco-rating the church come from donations of flowers, etc. throughout the year. A form is provided below for you to complete and return to the church office.

Please PRINT clearly! This information will be used in the bulletin. Cost is $10/per dedication. Please make your check payable to “Little Chapel “ and mark the memo section:

TILESTON

OUTREACH Please share your hats, coats,

gloves, blankets, etc.…so someone might keep warm this winter.

Tileston Outreach is in need of warm winter clothing for men, women & children, household items, warm blankets and linens. For December, Sister Isaac has made a special request of clothing for girls & boys ages 5-14. Toiletries for Tileston are always welcome! The end of the year is a perfect time to clean out your clos-ets and give your unused items to those in need. As always, your donations are most appreciated.

Please place your items on the Tileston Bench at the Little Chapel. For end of year tax purposes, you may find Tileston donation receipts under the toiletry basket on the mission table.

If you have furniture, appliances or a large quantity of boxed/bagged donations, you may call Sister Isaac’s office and leave a message requesting a van pick-up. Leave a detailed description of the items you wish to give at 762-5491, Ext 135. A volunteer will return your call to arrange a time for pick-up.

Tileston closes for the holidays on Dec. 17 and reopens on Jan. 4. If you have any questions, contact Ellen Dud-ley, 470-7588, [email protected] or Jacalyn Bristow, 471-5959, [email protected].

LONGEST NIGHT

SERVICE

Christmas is a time of joy and anticipa-tion. But for those who have recently lost a loved one, a job, or can't seem to shake the hopelessness of depression, Christmas can become the hardest time of the year. During these hard times, the joy of God's great gift of the baby Jesus can quickly get lost in the memories and despair that we are feeling inside. When grieving or depressed, we need the light of Jesus to shine brightly in our lives. However, it is nearly impossible to experience this on our own. We need the faithful fellowship of others to help us get through the holidays.

Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00PM, we will have "A Longest Night" service. It will be a service of remem-brance and connection. If you have lost a loved one, are depressed, or are in need of feeling God's comforting touch this Christmas season, I invite you to come and receive the blessing of worship and prayer. This will be a quiet service of reflection, music and healing prayer as we invite Christ to walk beside us during this difficult time.

Blessings, Pastor Pat

HOSPICE ♥

MEALS OF LOVE

Meals of Love program is designed to benefit family members and visitors to the Wilmington Hospice Care Center. Many times these families are exhausted physi-cally and mentally and preparing a meal is the last thing on their mind. So volunteers help support them by providing a meal in our family kitchen at the Care Cen-ter. The Little Chapel Mission Committee has decided to take care of these meals four times a year. Our fourth and last date to prepare a dinner meal for this year is December 14, 2015. There will be signup sheets in the narthex soon. We look forward to your helping with this wonderful mission opportunity.

Thank You to everyone at Little Chapel who supported Nourish North Carolina by contributing to feeding hun-gry children in New Hanover County . A check for $ 4,120.60 was presented to Steve McCros-san MPA the new Director of NNC. We are now help-ing feed over 500 children in 25 schools who would not have food on weekends, holidays and summer vacation. We will have another special offering to NNC in 2016. Please keep these children in your prayers and hearts.

Prayerfully, Iris Davis

We are grateful to you for all your support of the Out-reach here at Tileston. So many people have their needs met because of your caring. Have a Happy Thanksgiv-ing. Blessings, peace and prayers,

Dear Reverend Pat and the Congregation, Thank you for all the kind letters and cards that you, Marsha and the congregation have sent us over the past year. Your prayers and words of encouragement have brought us much comfort and helped us to feel God’s love in the midst of pain. Thank you for so faithfully remembering our daughter, Zana in the monthly news-letters and weekly bulletins. We covet your continued prayer and support.

Love, Rajah and Jamal Arab

Dear Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, Thank you for your generous gift of $500 to Children’s Hope Alliance received on 10/14/2015. Your vote of confidence for the children in our care is a very special investment in their lives. As we all know, the future depends on young people. With your donation, you have shown a child he is capa-ble of success. Our children often come from back-grounds of abuse, neglect and poverty. You have shown a child he can receive kindness at the hands of adults. Your kindness is significant to these children. Thank you for continuing to make a difference in their lives. Thank you for joining us in the ministry to better the lives of North Carolina’s children.

Peace, John Koppelmeyer, President /CEO Children’s Hope Alliance

On behalf of the Special Events Committee for the Wil-mington Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, I want to say thank you for allowing the workers and par-ticipants of the Spooky Sound Paddle Fest 2015 to park in the LCOB parking lot on Sunday, October 31. Alt-hough the participation was modest, we received phe-nomenal amounts of publicity coverage and the fun had by all assures that this family fun non-competitive race will be an annual event. Again, we are very appreciative of the use of your parking lot.
