Inthislecture,wetrytounderstandfundamentalsofthequantummechanicsandquantumchemistrythatarerequiredforadvancedchemistrycourses.Startingwithalectureoftheearlyquantummechanics,welearnhowtoformulatetheSchrödingerequation,whichisthebasicequationofquantummechanics.Thebasicconceptofwavefunctions(=solutionsoftheSchrödingerequations)arepresentedtounderstandthewavenatureofparticlesinatomicscale.Thenthesimplemodelsforvibrationalandrotationalmotionsofmolecules,andtheelectronicstateofthehydrogenatomaretreatedquantummechanicallyastheprototypesformorecomplexatomsandmolecules.Goal:

GaintheskilltosolvesimpleSchrödingerequationsusingaproblemofaparticleinabox.Extendittosolvequantummechanicalproblemsoftheharmonicoscillatorandtherigidrotatorofdiatomicmolecules,andtheelectronicmotionofthehydrogenatom.Contents:

Thermodynamicsisapowerfultooltounderstandtheequilibriumphaserelationshipthatisneededformaterialsprocessingincludingmaterialssynthesisandgrowthfromtheconventionaltothemostadvancedone.Italsogivesaninsightofthenonequilibriumprocessintermsofthedeviationfromtheequilibriumstate.Itshouldbealsonotedthatthermodynamicsisapowerfulmeantoproveyourdevelopingtheory.
