Digestion can be broken into 3 stages

1. Break down of solid food

2. Nutrient absorption

3. Water absorptionBut where do these stages occur?

Stage 1: The Blender

The Players: Mouth – Mechanical

chemical breakdown Esophagus - transport Stomach – complete

- Mouth: The Pulverizer, big pieces into little pieces

- Salivary Glands: secrete enzymes in saliva

- Esophagus: lined with smooth muscle and mucus.

- Stomach: secretes HCl and digestive enzymes. Contracts and churns to aid in digestion

Stage 2: The Filter

The Player: Small Intestine

Duodenum : Adds bile from bile duct, more digestion (10 inches)

Jejunum: Nutrient absorption (3 feet)

Ilium: Nutrient absorption (6 feet)Why the difference in length?

Colon– Water absorption. Bacterial digestion = vitamins and methane.

Rectum– Storage Anus- . . . EXIT
