Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Part-nership is set to benefit from a cancelled fireworks display.The annual display at Bishop Auckland has been held on land owned by the town’s rugby club in recent years but, following a programme of improve-ments to the site, the club says it is no longer able to host the event, however because the funds were already allocated, Durham County Council will now donate the money to the area’s AAPs.Over the past fortnight, Council officers have been busy visiting a number of sites suggested but unfor-tunately none which would be large enough, met with the site safety and access guidance. The council’s corporate director of neighbourhood services, Terry Collins, said, “We have explored

every suggestion and I am really sad to say we are now at the stage whereby we have to say we can’t go ahead this year.“I realise this will be really disappointing for many of the families who have enjoyed the display, but we have no alternative but to cancel it.“I am grateful to everyone involved, including the local members, for all their efforts in trying to help us find an alternative venue.“To compensate as best we can and as a goodwill gesture we have offered each of the three local Area Action Partnerships £3,000 to support other community events in their areas.“While I realise this isn’t going to replace what has been lost it will at least mean that residents in the former Wear Valley area still benefit from the funds set aside for the fireworks.”

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is holding a Volunteer Taster Day on Saturday 5th November, offering interested people the chance to learn more about the museum’s railway operation and find out ways of getting involved.There are a range of duties in running the museum’s

railway – from platform attendant and crossing keeper to train guard and locomotive fireman and driver – and there are always opportunities for new volunteers.At the Volunteer Taster Day, you’ll be able to meet existing members of the museum’s volunteer railway operations team, get on

board a locomotive in steam and gain an insight into the various duties. You can also learn more about other events and activities at the museum and complete the relevant paperwork required to sign up as a volunteer at the museum.The session begins at 11am and it’s free to participate. There’s no need to book – just go along and join in. Please note that you must be aged 18 or over to volunteer at Locomotion.On the same weekend, the museum will also be hosting another of its popular Cab It! events.At the Cab It! event, visitors will be able to get on the footplates of locomotives including the GWR 3700 ‘City’ Class 3400 City of Truro – Designed by George Jackson Churchward and built at the GWR Swindon Works in 1903. It was one of the contenders for the first steam locomotive to travel in excess of 100 mph.Visitors will have the op-portunity to enjoy a steam train ride on the museum’s running line – a small charge applies for this.The event will take place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November, from 10am to 4pm.For more information, contact the museum on 01388 771445.

Dear editor,

As landlord of the Red Lion, I felt I must write this letter in response to your story on the drug searches last week.

I must add that the man arrested in my pub was not a regular customer of mine - in fact I didn't recognise him at all.

I wholeheartedly welcome any drug searches at any time in my public house and hope the police continue their good work in searching ALL pubs in Shildon for drugs at more frequent and regular intervals.

I would like to assure all customers, old and new, that we do not advocate drug taking at all in the Red Lion and will bar, and endeavour to Pub Watch anyone caught with drugs in my establishment. Furthermore, I hope that the story printed last week will not discourage anyone from drinking in the Red Lion or eating in cafe Rewcastle.

Handsome boys Jayden-James Humble and Brandon Lee Vickers with their families.Two little boys from Dalton Crescent were baptised by Reverend Rupert Kalus on Sunday 9th October. Jayden James Humble, who was born on 4th February this year, was first to the font. His parents Byron Chittenden and Lauren Humble chose Lee Humble, Grace Henderson and Gareth Williams as Godparents.Three year-old Brandon Lee Vickers was next to be christened. Parents Stephen and Patsy Vickers looked on as Martin Caygill, Lynn Humble, George Kassim and Byron Chittendon took their vows as Godparents.Both families, who are close friends as well as neighbours, celebrated together at Old Shildon Club.The following Sunday - 16th October - Reverend David Tomlinson was on-hand to preside over two more christenings.Fifteen year-old Abi Christine Charlton from Magnolia Way was first to be welcomed into the church, with Claire Bryson taking on the roll of her Godmother. They celebrated with family and friends at the Royal George.Next up was Isaac William Bake, who was born in May 2011.William Bake and Samantha Weldon chose four Godparents for their son; Terrianne Race, Natasha Younghusband, Katie Doughty and Graeme Greenefield. A reception followed at Elm Road Club.

Drivers escape as cars burst into flamesA Shildon man is lucky to be alive after a serious collision near the Burtree Inn on Wednesday 12th October.A grey Renault Clio was travelling east on the A68, near junction 58 of the A1 motorway, when the driver, 32 year-old Andrew Basham from Shildon, apparently lost control on a left hand bend near the Burtree Caravans site. The car then headed over the grassed central area and onto

the opposite carriageway where it collided head-on with the Citroen car, which was being driven by a 60 year-old man from Toft Hill.Brave passers-by were quick to act, removing both of the drivers from their cars seconds before the vehicles burst into flames.The Shildon man suffered a fractured spine while the man from Toft Hill suffered fractures to his breastbone, spine and elbow.

The town’s police are appealing for information relating to the following incidents.- On the evening of Sunday 16th October, an unknown person damaged the wing mirror of a Citroen Saxo parked on Cheapside.On the evening of Saturday 15th October, an unknown person damaged the lock on the garden gate of one of the bungalows in Rowan Avenue. Please be aware of strangers, especially during the hours of darkness, and report anything suspicious.

Police appeals- During the early hours of Friday 14th October, somebody threw stones at a house in Lilac Court causing damage to two windows.- A male was arrested this week after being identified by staff at Bargain Booze on Main Street for being responsible for stealing a bottle of wine from the shop on Sunday 9th October. He stole the bottle by putting it up his sleeve, however staff saw what he did and contacted police.

The start of the cross country season saw a grand turn out for Shildon Running Club on Sunday 9th October. The North Yorkshire and South Durham league kicked off with a rather muddy event in Acklam, Middles-brough.Most age categories were represented by club members from Shildon AC and a new addition to the club earned them a first place in the under 15 boys. Henry Johnson recenty transferred to Shildon R & AC, and has proved a worthy addition to their squad as he sped round the 2.25 mile course in 10.56. Shildon claimed 1st team place as Joseph Bell stormed round to gain 2nd place in 11.25, and Jack Wade completed the trio with 13.22.

Shildon Grey Horse took on Grindon and Broadway in their most recent fixture.Grindon went ahead after 20 minutes thanks to some patient build up play up the left.The home sides winger was able to get up the line and send over a deep cross, which wasn’t dealt with by the struggling defence, and the ball fell nicely at the forward’s feet to tap home for 1-0.The Grey Horse responded by having their best period of the game and levelled when Neil Bannister played

Jeff Dixon in down the line. His near-post cross was met perfectly by Stephen Wheldon’s head and his un-stoppable effort made the half time score 1-1.The away side didn’t push on from this, however, and seemed to sit back and invite pressure on themselves. Fifteen minutes into the second period the home side were back in front.Poor play in the middle of the park saw Grindon pushing forward without anyone tracking back, and the defence was overran

for a simple goal to send them 2-1 ahead.Chances came and went as the Grey Horse pushed on, but the game ended 2-1 and another disap-pointing performance by a disjointed Shildon side.All the players and committee at the club would like to wish Dougie and his bride to be Angie all the very best for this Saturday 22nd October.Hopefully she’ll still allow Dougie to play!Next game, Saturday 22nd October at home to Washington Cross Keys.

Cross country season underway

The Under 15 girls gave the competitors a run for their money, as Rosie Findlay came home in 5th place with 12.17. Georgia Hirst ran well with 13.44 and helping them to gain 3rd team place was Shannon Ross with 15.33. The Under 17 boys had rather a complicated route and, whilst many followed the agreed map, some other competitors did not! Unfor-tunately due to the mix up the race had to be declared void. However, putting in good performances were Michael Bleasby with 3rd place over the 3.5 miles, with 21.25 and Matthew Coulthard clocked a time of 32.00. The Under 17 girls ran alongside the Senior and Vet Ladies across the 3.5 miles and gained 2nd team place. Amy Etherington got

3rd place over the line in 23.26, Zoe Hewitson dashed around in 24.04, (5th place) and not far behind was senior lady Natalie Owens with 26.12. Elizabeth Wood was fourth place team counter in a time of 27.05Daniel Hardy (U20) ran the 10k with the senior and Vet Men. He powered around the rather undulating course and gained 4th place overall, but 2nd for Under 20 men. He was only just over a minute behind the winner with 38.10. Saturday morning clubHeighington Boys Football Club is starting a new Saturday Morning Club for kids aged 7 and 8 (school years 2 & 3) at Heighington Parish Playing Fields from 9am to 10am. The qualified coaching team will be there to develop the youngsters’ football skills

Shildon AFC were due to play Penrith away on Tuesday 18th October in a league game, but the match was called off because the pitch was waterlogged.The Railwaymen are expecting a big crowd on Saturday 22nd October for their eagerly awaited home-tie against local rivals West Auckland in the

1st Round Proper of the F.A. Vase. West are having an excellent season and are in 2nd place in the league.Shildon will be up hoping for revenge as they lost 2 – 1 at home to West in the league in September.On Wednesday 26th October they are away to Norton & Stockton Ancients.
