New Forest Nightstop welcomes Sarah to the team Hi All I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Sarah Howden and I have recently joined New Forest Nightstop as Support Worker to Jude. I had previously applied to become a support volunteer with Nightstop so was delighted when an opportunity came up for me to become more involved with the service. My experience of volunteering within organisations dealing with issues of homelessness include 6 months in 2010 when I was lucky enough to be able to take a break from work and support the volunteer coordinator with the Street Homeless Prevention team in Southampton. We organised a variety of projects for people who had recently moved into hostel accommodation in the city, including an allotment project, first aid training courses, craft classes and also a befriending service. More recently I have been volunteering one day a week for the last year and a half in a homeless drop in Centre for Alabare which is a charity based in Salisbury - I really enjoy the time that I spend there and find it very satisfying to provide much needed help to the people who use the service.

Members We extend a warm welcome to the following groups who have become members in the last few months: Beaulieu Primary School The Red Lipstick Foundation

Jan Barratt, Walks Administrator at Community First New Forest, says “The accreditation is a massive boost to Healthy Walks New Forest , giving us credibility to work with local organisations, professionals and individuals who work with people who are looking to start or increase gentle exercise locally.” “We have 11 walks on various days and times across the New Forest area. The accreditation couldn’t have come at a better time as we have recently enjoyed a surge in new members, particularly in Fordingbridge where 24 people took part in the first walk there.” All the walks are led by volunteers who have been trained to a level where they are able to command a lead, risk assess and plan routes with competence, including Dementia Awareness training. All our Healthy Walks are free to take part, friendly and enjoyable in the beautiful National Park and surrounding areas. The success of the walks and now the accreditation, have been achieved through the hard work and dedication of volunteers together with financial support from New Forest District Council, Hampshire County Council and the New Forest National Park. We would recommend that anyone wishing to join a walk for the first time contacts the Volunteer Walk Leader of their chosen walk and has a chat. Details can be found at www.cfnf.org.uk/walks, Tel. 07788 558864 and speak to Jan or email [email protected].

Giant steps forward to accreditation! Community First New Forest is delighted to announce that the Healthy Walks project has been accredited by the national association, Walking for Health. A healthy walk encourages people of all ages to join regular, short walks in their own communities. Fun, free and supportive, once they’ve tried it walkers find it hard to stop! Led by a trained volunteer walk leader, the walks help to boost the health of those taking part whilst enjoying local, natural spaces in the company of others. The social side of walking can be as important for wellbeing as the walk itself. A free group walk usually lasting between 30-90 minutes, it starts at a slow pace to allow warm up, speed up for the main part of the walk and then slow towards the end to allow cool down. It should make the individual feel warmer and sweat a little, increase their rate of breathing and raise their pulse – but not so fast that they cannot talk!

Totton walkers enjoy a sunny day.

New mobility aids service for rural residents British Red Cross has introduced a new mobility aids delivery and collection service for rural New Forest and East Hampshire. Funded by the British Red Cross through the Balfour Trust for five years, the new service will be known as the Balfour project. The aim of the project is to help people in the rural community, who can’t access their established mobility aids depots, to maintain their independence at home. There will be no charge for this new service where service users meet the eligibility criteria. In addition to providing mobility aids equipment,

    General

the driver technician will be qualified as a trusted assessor. This means he will be qualified to fit and prescribe equipment in the client’s home. As well as practical support, he will be able to assess whether they could benefit from other independent living support services. Referrals are accepted from local health professionals and Red Cross’s own mobility aid depots. The contact is Al Atkins, mobile 07714272637, or email [email protected]. ________________________________________

Lock your outbuildings and security mark valuables Keep your sheds, garages and stores locked up and security mark your valuables – that’s the message to New Forest residents in a bid to beat the burglars. “Many people think ‘It couldn’t happen to me’, but you could become a victim of theft if you leave your property unsecured,” said Cllr Jill Cleary, New Forest District Council portfolio holder for Housing and Communities. “Don’t be complacent – make sure your sheds, garages and any other outbuildings are securely locked with a good quality device.” The Safer New Forest Partnership sells a highly-effective alarmed padlock to help householders secure their outdoor buildings and protect their property from intruders. Priced £10, the alarm can be purchased at New Forest District Council information centres. The Partnership also reminds residents to protect their valuable outdoor furniture, such as gas barbecues, patio heaters and patio sets, bikes and garden machinery, by property-marking and photographing them. They can also register their property for free on www.immobilise.com. New Forest Chief Inspector Simon Tribe said: “Please ensure your valuables are properly protected, especially when left in outdoor buildings which may be easier to access. Lock your outbuildings and remember if you don’t, you may not be covered by your insurance.”

    Grandparents Information Day

Picture courtesy of The Southern Daily Echo Following its success last year, Community First New Forest hosted a Grandparents Information Day in February at Lyndhurst Community Centre. Grandparents as Carers heard an excellent array of speakers from CAB, Family Lives, Age Concern & Princess Royal Trust. The presentations centred on advice and support that is available to grandparents in the caring role. Family Lives spoke about a befriending project that runs in the North of England by kinship carers. It is run by people who have been in the same situation themselves and know how important support is. Everyone enjoyed the presentations and had a chance to talk to others in similar situations and exchange their experiences over lunch. Grandparents can be thrown into a caring role unexpectedly, often as a result of a tragedy such as an accident, a death or drug and alcohol addiction. The event and the regular monthly support group meetings help to spread the message that you are not alone and that support and advice is out there. For more information contact Carol Malky on 01425 482773 or email [email protected].

The workshop is run in a centrally located venue, easily accessible by public transport, and with on-site childcare, thus eliminating a barrier to regular attendance and providing a highly focused environment. The locations for the programme during the summer term 2015 will be Andover, Basingstoke, Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Lymington. Funding YMM has been supported by an ESF grant through Action Hampshire which has enabled it to provide the crèches that are vital in helping the Mums fully engage in the programme. Other grants have come through CSI grants, Awards for All, Radian, Sovereign, Sentinel and Aster Housing Associations as well as Test Valley Borough Council. It has also received funding through a Supporting Families Innovation Grant which has allowed the opportunity to develop the programme into Gosport, Havant and The New Forest Districts. Children’s Centres play a key role in Young Mums Matter and provide venue, learning support and other costs in order for the programmes to be run. If you are working with a young family that would benefit from attending Young Mums Matter please contact Siobhan Down, Head of Programmes, [email protected] or call 0785 277 0852.

    Young Mums Matter (YMM) Programme

It also works closely in partnership with local organisations to develop stronger community links for young parents. The YMM programme is an accredited Level 1 twelve week programme which addresses the specific needs of teenage and young mothers and their child(ren), giving them a better chance to reach their educational and personal aspirations. In Kind Direct – donated goods for your charity In Kind Direct is one of The Prince’s Charities set up to support charities and non-for-profit organisations with donated goods. Goods range from cleaning products, toiletries, toys, clothes and a range of other items that can be used to run services and give to the people you support. Items are all new and good quality but become surplus because they are short dated, have slight defects in the packaging or branding or are returns. To access goods, charities register online, which is free, and can then order products via an online catalogue. Charities then pay a handling charge, which is generally 20% of the original retail price and includes delivery. For more information, please feel free to contact In Kind Direct, www.inkinddirect.org, Tel. 0300 30 20 200 or email [email protected]. _________________________________________

HMRC warn of phishing email scam HMRC are warning taxpayers to be wary of the latest in a long line of email phishing scams that claims taxpayers have ‘made mistakes while completing their last tax form application.’ HMRC has updated its list of phishing email scams to include the latest bogus email being circulated. According to HMRC: ‘The email contains a link which should not be clicked as it may direct you to a phishing site or contain malware. Do not respond to this email. Forward it to [email protected] then delete it.’

Gift aid small donations scheme (GASDS) GASDS enables charities to claim back 25p for every £1 that is donated to the charity or to a community amateur sports club. The claim enables charities to obtain this top-up payment where their small (£20 or less) cash donations income is up to £5,000. This £5,000 cap on gift aid claims under GASDS is to rise to £8,000 from April 2016, allowing charities and community amateur sports clubs to claim gift aid top-up payments of up to £2,000 a year. Although raising the cap will help those already benefiting from the scheme, it is unlikely to address the restrictive claiming requirements that have stopped charities signing up so far.

Can we help you raise money for your charity? Rotary Charity Walk at Beaulieu on Sunday 28 June 2015 Enjoy a family friendly charity walk through the private woods of the Beaulieu Estate and raise money for your chosen charity. The first walk was in 2011 and to date twenty charities have shared over £18,000, most of them local to the New Forest area. The walk is in the private woods of the Beaulieu Estate. This is a rare opportunity to explore an area of Beaulieu normally closed to visitors and raise funds for your nominated charity. The Rotary Club is grateful to Lord Montagu and Hon. Ralph Montagu who have given it permission for the charity walk to be held in the private woods of the Beaulieu Estate and in partnership with the Countryside Education Trust, Beaulieu. The walk passes the Treehouse Study Centre and the “House built in a day” up through the woods to Hilltop and around the estate, past “the House In the Wood” of wartime SOE fame down to the finish. The tracks are similar to those encountered in the New Forest and family dogs are welcome to accompany walkers. Complimentary refreshments are available at the finish along with certificates for walkers. There are two walks of differing distance, the main walk of 8k and a shorter 5k walk. Full details are available from the Rotary Beaulieu Charity Walk website: www.walkwithrotary.org.uk. Registration for each walker will cost £5, or a family may register together for £10. For group registration email

[email protected]. The sponsorship money plus 25% Gift Aid will be shared; 75% of this total goes to your chosen charity, and 25% to Rotary charities and good causes, locally, nationally and internationally. ________________________________________

Mental health education guidance for young people Education is key in preventing young people only accessing services when they are in crisis. Visit this link for more info including factsheets about the app for professionals, young people and parents: http://www.solentcamhs.nhs.uk/page_sa.asp?fldKey=247 You should find this useful for young people you work with or your own children or relatives. www.staceymillerconsultancy.co.uk ________________________________________ Changes to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction The Government's aim is that by 2020, housing benefit for private and social tenants will no longer be dealt with by your Council but will instead become part of the new Universal Credit that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be dealing with. The Government's intention is that in the period

2014 to 2020 claims for HB will start to be transferred from Councils to the DWP. Universal Credit is due to be rolled-out in the New Forest from December 2015, for single claimants only who would have claimed Jobseekers Allowance. New Forest Advice Network and New Forest District Council are undertaking a Universal Credit survey which is now active and we would encourage you to share with your clients. Make a difference to countryside access in the New Forest

Members are being sought for the New Forest Access Forum, which gives advice on improving access for walking, horse riding, cycling and other outside recreation in and around the New Forest. The Access Forum is an independent advisory body made up of volunteers with experience of issues affecting public access to the countryside and coast. Applications are welcome from anyone who has knowledge or experience in a wide range of areas, including:

    Leisure and recreation

    Farming and land management

    Nature conservation

    Education

    Health

    Tourism

The Forum meets four times a year and travel expenses to and from meetings are provided. Members of the Forum are formally appointed

for a term of three years by Hampshire County Council and the New Forest National Park Authority. Nigel Matthews, Head of Recreation Management and Learning at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘The work of the Access Forum is essential to the New Forest. Organisations such as the New Forest National Park Authority, Forestry Commission and the highways authorities value the advice of the Forum as they know it will take into account a wide variety of viewpoints. ‘I would urge anyone with an interest in the improvement of countryside access in the New Forest to consider applying to join the Forum.’ For more information contact Access Forum secretary Vicki Gibbon on 01590 646647 or [email protected]. R AISE Challenge Fund This is a £125,000 grant fund to stimulate new and bold activity within voluntary and community sector

groups, resulting in positive change across the communities they serve. The fund will reward the most creative project ideas and the most exciting means of delivery. It is throwing open the challenge to all parts of the sector and wants to hear how your organisation proposes to show leadership and embrace new ways of working or engaging with people. It is also keen to see how unlocking your potential can dramatically improve your organisation’s impact and effectiveness. A Grant Fund with a difference It doesn’t want to limit the potential and vision of organisations applying to the Fund. It has therefore taken the decision not to restrict the types of ideas, activity and organisations which are eligible for support (subject to the criteria laid out in the RAISE Challenge Fund guidelines). Applicants will be competing with each other, with assessments being made as to the creativity, reach and benefits afforded by the merits of each application. Grants of between £2,500 and £10,000 will be awarded, although other amounts will be considered based on merit. It is keen to hear from groups which struggle to secure funding from traditional sources. 'Grants Plus' Additional support will be provided to applicants before, during and after the application process. Prior to applying, all prospective applicants will have the opportunity of speaking informally with a ‘Partnership Manager’ to chat though ideas or

    Funding

seek clarification. As the application advances, the Partnership Manager will be available as a resource to the applicant, if desired, to provide further input or suggestions. It is especially keen to receive applications from organisations which have identified a need for support other than funding. In these instances, the Partnership Manager will actively work with the applicant to secure the identified support from external sources, or from within RAISE if applicable. Hurry – all grant monies will be awarded by September 2015. www.raise-networks.org.uk.
