GROWTH AND COMMUNITY

At the end of 2016, we recognized an urgent and surging recommitment

to grassroots civic engagement—the desire to stay on top of current

issues, to understand opposing viewpoints, to have smart and respectful

civic dialogue, and—most of all—to find pathways for personal action. In

unprecedented numbers, you turned to us to become better informed,

to build your civic network, and to find meaningful ways to give back.

Seattle CityClub responded with new and expanded programs, partnerships

and online resources to provide residents the necessary information and

tools to make a positive impact in the community.

This annual report chronicles our program growth in 2017. Thank you to

all who made that possible: Seattle CityClub’s donors, sponsors, members,

partners, community leaders, trustees and staff. Our appreciation for

what happened in 2017 is mirrored by our excitement about amplifying

our service and responsiveness in 2018.

Best regards,

Diane Douglas, Executive Director

DURING THE ELECTION SEASON Seattle CityClub

hosted a series of debates in King County,

empowering voters in the community.

Through free, public debates televised and

livestreamed through partnerships with KING

5, KUOW, KIRO 7, and GeekWire, Seattle CityClub

reached over 250,000 people.

Also, in partnership with Seattle Foundation’s

Vibrant Democracy Initiative, we provided

underrepresented communities direct access

to the candidates seeking office during a pivotal

election in Seattle’s history.

EMPOWERINGVOTERS

We reserved seats and audience questions at our Seattle Mayoral Debates for grant recipients of Seattle Foundation’s Vibrant Democracy Initiative. The Initiative provides funding and support to organizations advancing collaborative, systemic change that increases civic participation and racial equity in the region.

“Seattle CityClub’s partnership in incorporating underrepresented communities and inviting them to speak directly to local candidates is exactly the kind of engagement that makes our region stronger.”

—Tony Mestres, President & CEO at Seattle Foundation

WA STATE DEBATE COALITIONIn 2018, Seattle CityClub will continue

its commitment to leader access and

accountability by hosting statewide debates

through the Washington State Debate

Coalition, a Seattle CityClub program

composed of civic leaders, nonpartisan

organizations, colleges and universities,

and media partners committed to leading

the nation in setting a higher standard

for political debates. In its inaugural year

(2016), the Coalition’s debates informed

1,800 attendees and 1.1 million broadcast/

online viewers.

WITH SEATTLE’S DYNAMIC GROWTH and the

challenges that come along with it, Civic Boot Camp:

Livable Neighborhoods took on an essential role

in providing residents a deeper understanding

about the impact growth has on our community.

In 2017, Civic Boot Camp focused on building

leaders by providing over 300 participants

pathways to get involved and the tools to advocate

for the causes they care about, including volunteer

and philanthropic opportunities that extended

beyond the program.

After attending Civic Boot Camp: Livable Neighborhoods, participant Nadia Gandara was inspired to take advantage of volunteer opportunities she discovered on the walking tour.

“Attending Civic Boot Camp was a great opportunity for me to make connections in our community. By meeting staff from Immanuel Lutheran Church, I was later able to partner with them for a volunteer project related to their homeless program.”

—Nadia Gandara, Volunteer Initiatives Manager at United Way of King County

DURING A YEAR OF DRAMATIC SHIFTS in the

nation’s political landscape, Civic Cocktail became

a home for insightful conversations about the

important issues affecting the region.

In advancing dialogue and diverse voices, Civic

Cocktail connected 1,600 residents searching

for answers with leaders and experts leading

critical discussions.

Immigration activist Ray Corona shared his first-hand experience with the U.S. immigration system just weeks after DACA was repealed and provided residents valuable insights into what it means to be a United States immigrant.

“It is clear to me that immigration will forever be an issue in the U.S. and we have to address its impact in a meaningful way. Civic Cocktail provided me the chance to share with other residents why we need a permanent pathway to citizenship.”

—Ray Corona, Immigration Activist

GREATER SEATTLE IS A BRIGHT SPOT when it

comes to civic health in the United States according

to our 2017 Civic Health Index, developed in

partnership with Community Attributes. Greater

Seattle ranks 1st in charitable giving more than

$25, 2nd in contacting/visiting a public official and

4th in voting.

Informing decision-makers about key community

needs, the Civic Health Index guides strategic

priorities in the community.

Since its launch in May, the 2017 Greater

Seattle Civic Health Index has received over

3,600 pageviews.

The 2017 Greater Seattle Civic Health Index has proven to be a useful tool for Seattle Works in making evidence-based decisions about their goals and how to best use their resources to make a greater impact in the community.

“Seattle Works always looks to the Civic Health Index to inform our strategy and priorities. We cited the Index in our strategic plan, and reference it regularly. In a way it gave us a mandate to double down on what we do best: build community through volunteerism.”

—Ben Reuler, Executive Director at Seattle Works
