The nearby Witton Park Community Association also received £9,750 and is looking to use its funding to help set up two sustainable energy projects, including a mini turbine fitted within the River Wear and a local biomass wood harvesting site. A Diamond Couple

The Mayor of Ferry-hill, Councillor Pauline Crathorne, was proud to represent the Town Council and present a lovely bouquet of flowers and a glass tumbler to Stan & Marina Wright, who were celebrating 60 happily married years together. The couple were wed at St. Luke’s Church, Ferryhill on 28th August 1954.Both Stan & Marina were born in the village with Stan attending Dean Bank School and Marina going to The Broom. They had known each other from Kirk Merrington Youth Club, but got together at the Welfare Hall Dance in Ferryhill Station when Marina was 17 years old. Stan, 81, left school and started an apprentice-ship at NECOL at Fer-ryhill Station, working there for 22 years. In 1971, at the age of 38, he

was one of the first men at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station, building it from the foundations. He worked his way up and became a site agent, in charge of 30 electricians, before retiring in 1995.Marina left school and went to work at Praxis Clothing Factory in Fer-ryhill before moving onto the Co-op in Kensington Gardens, where she worked until the family came along. After they married they lived in The Cottage, which was next to Dial House, then moved into Lambton Road, living next door to Stan’s parents. After time in Broom Road, they moved in 1995 to their current address in Ullswater Road. The lovely sprightly couple have one daughter Ann, who lives in the village, and one son Paul, who lives in Spain. They have 2 grandchildren

and 5 great grandchil-dren. Marina said the best Diamond Wedding present was the birth of her great grandson Cameron, who was born just two weeks ago.The couple have loved dancing throughout their lives together, and also liked looking after their garden. Marina liked to knit, whilst Stan played bowls after he retired from work. Their main love is caring for the family, especially the grandchildren, who went away on holiday with them.To celebrate their won-derful occasion the family organised a holiday in Keswick, which was finished off with a meal for family and friends at The Old Mill, in Metal Bridge on Sunday 31st August. This was a double celebration as it was also Marina’s 80th birthday.

The Mayor of Ferryhill Councillor Pauline Crathorne presented Stan & Marina Wright with a bouquet of flowers and a glass tumbler.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

Thank you girls for escorting me home on Saturday 23rd after some pea-brained idiot spiked my drink while having a quiet family drink. Just goes to show decent people can not enjoy a safe place to relax and chill out in Ferryhill.

Thanks girls, hope your parents are as proud of you as I am thankful.

Name and address withheld on request

Dear Editor,

Through your paper could I give a great big thank you to Rita and David for all the work they do for Ferryhill Town Youth football.

As well as all the games and tournaments they also arrange a Summer Days Play Scheme for all the children in the school holidays.

On Wednesday 27th August, being the last play day, a trip to South Shields was organised for the children and helpers, where we had a lovely day. Before returning home we were all treated to a free bag of chips.

Rita and David dedicate a lot of their time for the youth of Fer-ryhill, so once again a big thank you.

Could I also mention the good behaviour of all the boys and girls. They are a credit to Ferryhill Town Youth.

Name and address withheld on request.

A young man from Fer-ryhill is to rediscover the simple pleasures in life after attending an intensive therapy course to control his stammer.Liam Todd, 20, of Ferryhill has always struggled with his speech, often he would get stuck on certain words and would either replace them or avoid speaking all together. He said, “I cannot remember a time I spoke fluently.“I felt ashamed and worried I wasn’t normal, it was a secret.“I shied away from friends, speaking to girls, tried to hide my stutter and never showed emotions.“I thought I was getting away with it but my parents and those who really knew

All of Durham County Coun-cil’s 214 infant and primary school kitchens are serving free meals to children as the new academic year gets underway. As well as being able to offer free meals to Key Stage 1 pupils in reception class and years one and two, each of the council’s 214 schools is providing hot meals to any child, including those eligible under the current free school meals criteria. The free school meals ini-tiative was announced by the Government in 2013 and will see every four to seven-year-old in primary schools across England eligible for free dinners.

me knew something was up.”Whilst attending Dean Bank Primary and Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, Liam forced himself to learn quickly so he would not have to ask for help. After school he joined The McGuire Programme, in which stammerers develop techniques and facial ex-ercises to control their stammer. With new found confidence Liam attended two inter-views and a group exercise earning himself a job as an apprentice toolmaker at Gestamp Tallent in Newton Aycliffe. He commented, “I’m really proud of that, if I hadn’t joined the programme and learnt to control my

County Durham was part of a national free school meals pilot between 2009 and 2011, which showed that many children who benefitted from a daily, hot, healthy school lunch made more academic progress than those not taking part.It is expected that up to 85 per cent of eligible children will take advan-tage of free school meals this academic year based on figures collected from the pilot scheme. The Government handed the council £1.1m to improve kitchen and dining facilities in schools in order to provide the free school meals. Some

stammer I don’t know what I’d be doing now, probably something I hate.“I get pleasure in simple things now, ordering a pizza, booking my own dentist appointment and ordering a drink – I could never say Desperados at the bar so drank Fosters as it was easier.“I like getting the bus some-where I want to go rather than the next street down, when I went to college in Durham I’d let my mates get on first then when they had their tickets say ‘same please’.“I was always holding back but now I can be myself.”Liam now intends to become a coach on The McGuire Programme to help others find their voices.

schools have contributed a combined £157,236 of their own finances to further upgrade their kitchen and dining facilities as part of wider building projects in preparation for the changes.Alison Young, health and wellbeing operational lead at Durham County Council, said: “We are excited that once again we can deliver free school meals to some of our youngest school children.“The success of the pilot between 2009 and 2011 showed that children achieved up to two months more academic progress than those who didn’t receive free school meals.

Two victories for Mainsforth Cricket Club

Ferryhill Celtic

Due to a combination of holidays and work com-mitments, Mainsforth Cricket Club had to call on several junior players to enable them to field two senior teams at the weekend. However the club were not let down as both sides recorded thor-oughly deserved victories. The 1st XI travelled to Boldon C.A. with juniors Curtis Bihari, Nathan Wall and Ryan Dawson in the squad. Boldon batted first and the MaInsforth bowlers continued the season’s good work by bowling out the opposi-tion for 138 runs. With regular batsman missing this was a challenging target which appeared even more difficult to chase when professional Nawaz was dismissed with

Ferryhill Celtic played in the second round of the league cup on Sunday which turned out to be a very eventful game. The Celtic started the game on the front foot, playing football from back to front, and were quick to create a couple of early chances. Jonny Agar and Craig Winkworth went close but with 20 minutes on the clock Kelloe took the lead when their centre forward shoting from 25 yards, flowing into the roof of the net. For the remainder of the half the Celtic continued to dominate. Liam Taylor went close with an overhead kick, and on 35 minutes Jonny Agar broke through only to see his shot come back off the post, but the Celtic incredibly went in 1-0 down at half time. After the restart the Celtic created a great chance only 2 runs on the board.

However, when opener Robert Chismon (55) was joined at the crease by Brady Smith (51), the pair gave an excellent display of controlled batting to give Mainsforth a 6 wicket win. In the reverse fixture at Mainsforth the 2nd XI included 7 juniors in the line up, with Brad Bihari, Zak Strange and Lewis Jowett coming into the senior side from the club’s under 13 team. Boldon again batted first and were bowled out for a miserly 50 runs. Kevin Strange was the pick of the bowling attack taking 5 wickets for 15 runs. In the reply Mainsforth lost 8 wickets in reaching their target to record a memorable win.On Saturday night the clubhouse was standing

when the outstanding Luke Thompson hit the bar with a drive from just inside the box. The Celtic continued to press for the equaliser with Neil Bell and the talented Ben Clary both hitting the bar again in the space of 5 minutes. Just when it looked like Celtic were running out of time, Luke Thompson hit a low drive and the ball nestled into the side netting on the 80 minute mark, to send the game into extra time.Extra time brought two red cards for Kelloe and the Celtic got their just desserts when the majestic Jay White teed up man of the match Jonny Agar to fire into the top corner of the net to send the Celtic through to the next round. The Celtics next game is on Sunday, a derby away against The Hub.
