It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Markievicz Park to theseCounty Finals. You will be joined by many around the world who will be keep-ing in touch, via various methods of communication, with the progress of ourtwo finals today.

We have wonderful clubs in this county all striving to do their best for ourAssociation by promoting football, hurling, cultural activities and handball. Ialso wish to recognise the Schools and Colleges throughout Sligo as well astheir staff for their unselfish support over the years.

In the times that are in it I want to remind clubs to be prudent when it comes to spending their funds and let usall support local businesses and professionals especially those who are sponsoring our Association at local andnational level. Without their valued help we would find it very difficult to promote our games. A special word ofcongratulations to “ The Sligo Champion” who are175 years in existence this year.

I am glad to inform you that work began last May on our Centre of excellence at Scarden following the securingof a 22 acre site there with the total project expected to cost in the region of ¤3m. when completed. This proj-ect will be among the biggest sport facility developments taking place at this time anywhere. It gives us greatcomfort to know that Club Sligo, which is establishing itself worldwide, is designated to co fund this legacy devel-opment along with the Croke Park finance committee and other agencies and Corporate entities; please followits progress on www.sligogaa.ie . I want also to recognise the many Clubs in the county who are at this time up-grading and developing their own grounds with a collective spend, well in excess of a million euro.

Today is one of the high lights of our calendar when we host both the Minor "A" Championship Final and theBelfry Senior Football Final. I welcome the two minor contestants St John's and St Mary's and the seniorsCoolera / Strandhill (Who celebrate their 125th. this year) and Tourlestrane along with both their Managementteams. It is a wonderful achievement for the four Clubs and I congratulate them. We also give a sincere thanksto all the clubs who contributed to making our championship so interesting and competitive in 2011 and you thesupporters who attended these games in record numbers. On behalf of the County Board I wish to thank theMarkievicz Park Committee, the volunteer stewards, Gardai and paramedics for their services. They all workbeyond the “call of duty” and I am confident that this will continue to be the case. The co-operation of the localcommunity on match days and other events does not go un-noticed and I trust that this will last far into the future.I want to compliment the referees and their officials for their professionalism on the field of play over the year.To those in charge to-day I wish them a satisfying experience.

To all of you in attendance here today I wish you a safe journey home to your families. I hope the media bothlocal and national have a worthwhile day's Gaelic football and I appreciate your coverage of our association’sactivities during 2011

Welcome to Markieviez Park where I am surethat like myself and my colleagues in Coiste NanOg you eagerly await today’s minor A finalwhich feature near north Sligo neighbours StMary’s and St John’s. We wish both sets of play-ers and mentors well for today’s game and hopethey enjoy the occasion which I am sure will bea competitive and sporting contest. This is theconclusion of a long season which commencedin late February, and following on from participa-tion in the various club, schools and county com-petitions I am quite sure these players are in topshape physically and are well motivated and willbe anxious to add a minor A title to their GAAsporting resume.

Underage football in Sligo is I believe improvingwith the various development squads, schoolsand club coaching networks, and the compre-hensive, varied and innovative programme ofleagues which have been introduced by Coistena nOg in recent years. However from a countyperspective realistically we have a lot of groundto make up and desperately need to add to ourone and only Connacht Minor title in 1968.Watching Tipperary Minors amazing perform-ance last Sunday in Croke Park where they dugin and refused to submit to a Dublin team, thebookies favourites and ultimately seizing on theirgoal opportunity to win their first all Ireland since1934, viewers could not but be impressed by thecharacter, self belief, and the ability of theseplayers who are emerging one must not forgetfrom a premier hurling county. This has to givecounties like ourselves hope for the future andwe must examine carefully their blueprint forsuccess if we are to emulate their achievements.Indeed we should consider decamping to

Tipperary for a time or perhaps invite JohnEvans and Co to Sligo to demonstrate their win-ning formula! On a serious note Tipperaryunderage football has to be admired as theirminor success is not just a flash in the pan theirU21 team featured well last year and their U15/16 development squads are now a match for thetraditionally strong Cork and Kerry teams.

I would like to wish today’s referee CiaranMcGovern, his linesmen Gus Chapman andBarry Judge well and hope both the participatingteams and supporters alike enter in to the GAA’s‘respect for all’ initiative. Many thanks asalways to the Markieviez Park committee andPaddy Galvin and Tom Gallen in particular fortheir cooperation in hosting our championshipfinals this summer and compliment them asalways in the presentation of their wonderfulgrounds and facilities. To my fellow members inCoiste na nOg Damien McGovern, DeirdreGethins, Martin Seery, Michael Regan, EndaMulrooney, Francie O’ Dowd, Pat Cawley andKevin Molloy I extend my sincere thanks fortheir hard work all season in ensuring thesmooth running of our six hundred plus fixtures, also their unstinting loyalty to Sligo football.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy this evening’s gamesboth minor and senior and wish you all a safejourney home.

Best RegardsPeter McHugh

Tourlestrane A Brief History Tourlestrane, meaning "the green fields of scorching corn” situated in the center of the parish ofKilmactiegue borders the parishes of Killasser and Bonniconlon Co. Mayo. The club's connectionswith the GAA stretch back to the foundation of the organisation. Currently Tourlestrane GAA Clubfields 19 teams and competes at all levels in hurling, football, and ladies football. In 1938 the club as we know it today was formed by an amalgamation of Rhue and Aclare. Our firstSenior Football final appearance came in 1944 when we were defeated by Craobh Rua. The clubcaptured its first senior Championship title in 1956 with the defeat of our close neighboursTubbercurry. The ravages of emigration took their toll but while we did not enjoy success at seniorlevel the foundations of our underage structure wer laid in the sixties and seventies. In the 70's due mainly to the efforts of the late Johnny Durkin and our current President MickeyGallagher, the club won numerous titles at all levels. Members of the team today have all tasted suc-cess at under age levels due to the hard work over many years behind the scenes of the managers, club officers and trainers who devote many hours off the pitch in promoting our games. The club havea policy at under age level of giving everyone a chance and we try to develop and nurture all the skillsof the games. Our championship winning teams of 1978 and 1982 were the first beneficiary’s of thisfar reaching vision. In 1982 the club was unique in winning both the Minor and Senior titles on the same day and we wneton to contest the Connacht final before losing out to the great Clan na Gael Team. The 1990’s brought the most successful period of our history as we annexed titles in ’94, ’97, ’99,2004 and most recently in 2007 The senior football panel today contains several sets of brothers, the Egan’s, Leonard's, Dunne's,McIntyre's, Brennan's and Gaughan’s plus numerous cousins, proof of the true ambitions of thefounders of the GAA, to promote our games at local level. The entire panel are exemplary role mod-els for the numerous under age players at present with the club

The club have invested substantial amounts of money, mainly raised from our many supporters nearand far, into the refurbishment of its facilities to create one of the finest in Connacht. The projectbegan with the provision of a floodlit training pitch. The main pitch was completely re drained andresurfaced, new perimeter fencing was erected, world class lighting was erected, a state of the artScoreboard installed and , the addition of a heated press box are just some of the major jobs com-pleted to date. The next phase of the development was the provision of a new training pitch and relat-ed facilities which were completed in 2010.

JOHN McPARTLAND -TEAM CAPTAIN

For upwards of twodecades JohnMcPartland, theStrandhill native, has been one of themost prominent anddedicated playersto have worn thefamiliar red andwhite. Throughouthis playing careerhis contribution tothe Club has been

unrivalled, having played with distinction in allgrades from U-12 through to Senior and winningcounty medals in all with the exception of minor. In

1990 he played on the Coolera-Strandhill U-14 sidethat was successful in the All-Ireland Feile inGalway. He came into prominence in under-age as a sturdyright full back but as he progressed into seniorranks he quickly made a name for himself as theClub's leading scorer operating either at centre halfor centre full forward. In the 2005 Co. Final he wasthe team's top scorer and winner of the coveted'Man of the Match' award. The successful clubman quickly graduated onto thecounty panel. From 1993 to 2007 he played in allgrades from U-16 to Senior and culminated with hisname on the score sheet in Sligo's victory overGalway in the 2007 Connacht Final.Leading his Club to success in to-day's Final wouldbe a crowning achievement to what has been along and distinguished career in his beloved redand white.

Coolera-Strandhill 125Coolera-Strandhill, one of theoldest clubs in the County, this year celebrates its 125birthday, having been found-ed in 1886 What more fittingway to mark this historic mile-stone than being a contenderin this year's County Final andhopeful of victory.

Over a century and a quarter the Gaels of the CuilIrra peninsula have played under different banners:Knocknarea, Strandhill Young Irelanders, Cooleraand more recently Coolera-Strandhill. At intervals, notably in the 1930's, 1940's and early 1950's twoclubs operated in this compact seaside rural parish, namely, Coolera and Strandhill and whenever theycompeted against each other, usually in the Juniorgrade, they did so in a friendly and neighbourlyfashion. In 1982 the two clubs amalgamated as Coolera-Strandhill and over the past thirty years have beento the forefront in the promotion of Gaelic games, both football and hurling, amongst the various agegroups and have produced a number of prominentplayers, including James Curran, Neil Carew,James Joyce, Kieran Quinn, John McPartland andKarol O'Neill, who not only formed the backbone ofthe club over the years in the various grades butalso have played in the Sligo colours with distinc-

tion. That tradition is currently being carried forwardby Keelan Cawley and Alan Costello.

To-date, the Club has played in eight CountyFinals, that of 1891,1907,1938, 1939, 1946, 2000,2002 and 2005, winning two, 1907 (v. Easkey) and2005 (v. Curry). To-day's game is the Club's ninthappearance in a senior Final. Recent Club suc-cesses in football at county level include: S.F.L.2005 and 2007; I.F,C. 1989 and 1995; J.F.C. 2007and U-21/ U.20 in both 2002 and 2009.Four of to-day's line-out, namely, Tony Waters,Kieran Quinn, John McPartland and Karol O'Neill, have already played in three Finals, 2000,2002 and2005. Three others, Rory O'Connor, Con O'Meara(who played on the winning Tourlestrane side in1997) and Colm Mullen, were on the successful2005 team, while Barry Doyle, also on to-day'spanel, played in the previous three Finals. LukeBree, one of the eight newcomers, was a memberof the SligoJunior All-Ireland winning side of 2010.To-day's Joint-Managers, Alan Kelly and NeilCarew, played prominent roles on the field of playin the winning of the 2005 championship. In the current championship the Club has playedseven games, winning six, loosing one and scoringan impressive 11 goals and 83 points, an averageof 16 points a game, while conceding 6 goals and59 points. County players Alan Costello and NiallMurphy are the team's top scorers.

A Word from the Chairman of Coolera Strandhill

On behalf of the Coolera Strandhill GAA club, I would like to welcome everybody to what will hope-fully be a great game of football today. It is always good to be involved in a county final. Theprospect of taking the Owen B Hunt Cup back under the Ballydrehid bridge, in this the 125th anniver-sary of the founding of our club, is particularly mouth watering. I would like to wish our team andmanagement the very best of luck. Tourlestrane are a fine team and will be hoping to add to theirachievements today. However, I hope we will be good enough to put a dent in their expectations forthis year.We remember in a special way at this time John Keane R.I.P. and Bobby Milne R.I.P., two of our clubpatrons who passed away earlier this year.I thank the County Board, the management of Markievicz Park, the referee and his officials and allinvolved with making today’s game possible. THE SOCIAL INITIATIVEThe GAA Social Initiative has, since its establishment in August 2010, taken root within the clubsinvolved. The Initiative arose from an invitation by President Mary and Martin McAleese to the GAAto implement a scheme for men in the community, many of whom, from their observations, were find-ing it more difficult in recent years to engage fully in community life and identify suitable social out-lets. While President McAleese’s original concern was for men, it is self-evident that to attempt toorganise social activities within GAA clubs which would, in all cases, be confined to men is unrealis-tic. Therefore, while the Social Initiative retains a focus on men in the community, it is not exclusiveand clubs are encouraged to vary the type of activity they organise to include in their social pro-gramme events to which the entire community can be invited. Social events and activities should alsobe open to those in the community who are not GAA members. Our task is a simple one: to offer asocial outlet that is safe and welcoming and that provides a route into and a place in our communitySo far, 93 clubs have volunteered to participate in the Pilot Phase and are engaged in organising var-ied and worthwhile social events for their communities. The clubs’ efforts are greatly appreciated bythose involved and have invariably led to more active participation by the community and an interestin expanding the range of activities being organised. Examples of club activities can be seen in theSocial Initiative Newsletters on the website: www.gaa.ie/socialinitiative. The objective for 2011 is toincrease the number of clubs involved to 150 by October and we are therefore appealing to all GAAclubs to seriously consider participating in the Initiative in the coming year. All that is expected ofclubs in the Initiative is to organise a minimum of five social events/activities during the year - main-ly during the winter period. A Seminar will take place for all Social Initiative clubs on 15 October inCroke Park. If your club is interested in participating in the GAA Social Initiative please contact SeánKilbride at 01 8658617/087 9835810 or Joan Cooney at 01 8658680.
