I grew up with the music of Fiddler on the Roof. I’ve seen the film, the west end show and countless amateur productions. I even walked down the aisle to sunrise

sunset like many other Jewish brides. The story connects to my soul as my great, great grandmother escaped the pogroms with her 6 sisters before travelling to England.

Jewish traditions and customs have not changed in hundreds of years. The Sabbath in a Russian village in 1905 is the same as it is in our house in 21st century Nelson. The story of Tevye and his family is one we can all identify with, as we walk the line be-

tween our dreams and beliefs and the more modern ones of our children.

I am honoured to have been asked to consult with Jess and the cast and am over-whelmed by their desire to be as authentic as possible. What they have produced is a compassionate, humorous and beautiful show that does Josephs Stein’s masterpiece

proud.”

Mark WentworthProducer

Forty four years ago, I had started my first job in Christchurch, at an Electrical Whole-saler, the new Town Hall had been opened in 1972, Fiddler on the Roof was on stage, and I was asked to take some new replacement lights for the show about to start that week. Upon arriving I was asked if I was interested in being the follow-spot operator

for the night, and that, in short, is how I was introduced to the thrill of live theatre and later cinema.

Out of the many live shows I have been involved with since then, Fiddler On The Roof is one of the most rewarding for me, with musical numbers which resonate in your head, long after the show is done. Live Theatre has a big place in our society

and we see many people excel in life as a result of performing on stage. People of all ages, and all walks of life, accept the challenge to take part, and often come out of

the woodwork and surprise even themselves with key roles, be they on stage, or back stage. I enjoy the technical behind the scene challenges, and I hope you all enjoy this wonderful musical of a bygone era with our very talented local cast and musicians.

SynopsisIn the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of chang-

ing social morals and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.

As each of his three eldest daughters find increasingly non-traditional matches for themselves, Tevye is forced to rethink his values and just how far he is will-

ing to stray from the traditions of his faith and culture he holds so dear.

The ever present threat of a pogrom also hangs heavy in the air, and when a demonstration takes place at a family event, everything changes.

Creative Team

Jessica D’Ath  Director/Production Manager

Jess first fell in love with musical theatre at the age of six, after being introduced to the Les Miserables soundtrack when the pro-duction performed in New Plymouth. She has since gone on to

study a Bachelor of Music at Canterbury University, and became a Secondary School Music and Drama teacher before leaving to raise her daughter, who is now three. Jess now works as freelance vocal and music educator, and loves the freedom to be creative which

this grants her. Jess attended the National Singing School in Napier in 2011, and was selected to attend and perform at the New Voices Workshop in Melbourne, with Australian composer, Matthew Lee

Morrison in 2016. She has previously appeared in a number of shows in Christchurch, notably, ‘Çats’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’.. Most recently she had a blast performing as Lucy in ‘Ýou’re A Good Man Charlie Brown’ with Nelson Mu-sical Theatre. This is her debut as a musical theatre director, and

she would really love to thank Michaela, Mark, Lynley, Carl, Kerry, Sophie and Saul for the enormous amount of support they provided

in helping bring this show to life.

Michaela Sheehan Musical Director

Michaela is no stranger to the theatre scene, having graced the world with her performance presence since age 7. Growing up in the greater Waikato area in the North Island Michaela Learned

Piano, Clarinet and Speech and Drama, performing in all these areas right through her schooling years. Michaela continued to act and

perform focusing on theatre after leaving school and has appeared in over 30 shows in the last 20 years. Highlights of these shows

include The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, and Stepping Out. She began Musical Directing at the age of 20 when she was asked to fill in as MD in Te Awamutu Light Operatic Societies season of Blood Brothers. By day you can find Michaela studying to be a Pri-mary School Teacher and she fills what spare time she has left with teaching Vocal and Piano Lessons from her home studio. Michaela has had a great time working with Jess and this exceptionally tal-

ented cast and crew, and hopes you enjoy the show as much as she has enjoyed working on it.

Kerry Clark Coreography

Kerry has been passionate about performing arts from a very young age. Studying at The Melody Urquhart Master School in Norwich,

UK she has qualifications in The Royal Academy of Dance classi-cal ballet grades and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing tap and modern jazz grades. Kerry went on to become a professional performer starting her career as a blue coat entertainer/dancer at Holimarine Holiday Park in UK. From there she went on to choreo-graph and perform in many shows, plays, pantomimes and corpo-rate events. The highlight of Kerry’s career was travelling the Med-iterranean as head dancer on board Princess Cruise Liners working in Cyprus, Egypt and Israel. Kerry has now turned her attention to teaching dance and is currently studying to become a ballet teacher under the direction of Peta Spooner and plans to be fully qualified

by the end of the year.

Lynley RutherfordStage Manager / Assistant Director

Lynley has loved the theater her entire life. Her earliest memories are acting as a mermaid, in a Richmond Primary School Production and Flying a Kite ( Lets go Fly a Kite - Mary Poppins) in a Scout Show. Her grandmother Joanna Ladds, also played a big part in Lynley’s

interest in Musical Theatre. Joanna was instrumental in many theater groups in and around Nelson, including Repertory and The Colling-wood Players. Lynley is a busy Mum of four and an amateur artist but finds time to sing, act, paint scenery or be backstage. Theater is where she recharges her batteries. She is married to Steve, who is now one of our regular musicians, and both are a part of their

Church worship team Lynley started working with Nelson Theatrix last year, taking part in ‘Wicked Women of the Stage’ and our Hal-loween Cabaret. She has also worked with Nelson Musical Theater,

with roles in ‘Cats’ and ‘Nunsense’. This is her first foray into directing. She has enjoyed working with Jess, the Directer, challenging herself

and her abilities. Lynley is excited to see what the future holds.

The Principals

TevyeLester Oakes

In his head he thought the role was big. Wrong! The role was enormous!! Deep in his memory was a saying he some-

times uses in one of his real-life roles as a Marriage Cele-brant, where he encourages couples “to risk more, and thus

gain more.” Time then, to walk the talk. And to extend the marriage

analogy, Lester feels like he’s been in a committed full-time relationship with Tevye and Fiddler on the Roof ever since

auditions in October. Recent lead roles as Parkes in ‘Caravan’ and King Arthur in ‘Spamelot’ have laid the groundwork for him to tackle the challenge of playing Tevye. To interact not only with his fellow actors, but also with the audience, him-self, God and the Fiddler at various times in the show has

been as rewarding as it has been challenging. To be part of a cast that has brought this hauntingly beautiful story to life

has been a highlight of his performing career.

GoldeAmanda Crehan

Amanda immigrated to New Zealand from the UK in November 2014, having spent many years treading the boards in the South of England. Musical theatre credits include Nellie – South Pacific; Hodel – Fiddler on the Roof; Laurey - Oklahoma!; Mrs Bliztein – Blitz!; Hope - Anything Goes; Lilly/Kate – Kiss Me Kate; Marion

– The Music Man; Eliza – My Fair Lady; Dolly – Hello Dolly!; Elsa – The Sound of Music; Miss Hannigan – Annie. Operatic cred-its include: Casilda – The Gondoliers; Josephine – HMS Pinafore; Mabel – Pirates of Penzance; Elsie – Yeoman of the Guard; Ida

– Princess Ida; Patience – Patience; Phyllis – Iolanthe; Rose Maybud – Ruddigore; Yum Yum – The Mikado; Rosalinde – Die Fledermaus; Valencienne - The Merry Widow. Since arriving in Nelson Aman-da has sung solo roles for the Nelson Civic choir including Gabriel in The Creation and soprano solos in Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater and John Leavitt’s Missa Festiva. She is also a member of Avid Opera. A solicitor by profession, Amanda now works as a Senior Associate

at Knapps Lawyers.
