The Trinity expresses the Christian belief that there are three different aspects to the nature of God.

The Trinity

Which Christians do not believe in the Trinity? Why?

Most Christians believe that God is a Trinity: that He is three entities in one:

God the Father

God the Son

God the Holy Spirit.

These three elements are all part of the same God – Christians do not believe in three gods.

Just as a father is the ‘creator’ of his children, so God the Father is the ‘creator’ of the universe.

God the Father

Christians believe that God the Father created the world:

I believe in God,the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth…

The Apostles’ Creed

Christians believe that God sustains the universe. He loves and protects His creation, just as a father does his children.

What evidence might Christians present to show God loves and protects his creation?

As such, Christians believe that Jesus was both completely divine and human at the same time.

God the Son

Christians believe that Jesus was God incarnate, which literally means ‘into flesh’. Therefore, they think that Jesus was God in human form.

Christians believe Jesus faced the same challenges and temptations as humans. Both His suffering and death are viewed as real, rather than symbolic.

Find examples in the Bible that suggest that Jesus was human and divine at same time.

Fire, wind and a dove are common symbols of the Holy Spirit. Why do you think this is?

God the Holy Spirit

According to John 14:15–27, Jesus promised His disciples that after His death the Holy Spirit would come to comfort and guide them.

Christians believe the Holy Spirit brings religious wisdom and gives people the courage to act on and the ability to speak of their beliefs.

In the Bible, the Holy Spirit gave early Christians special gifts, such as the ability to speak in tongues.
