Montero, 24, led the PCL with 33 RBI and 72 total bases in 27 games with the Rainiers last month. He ranked second in the league in slugging percentage (.692) and extra-base hits (17), and third in total hits with 39. Montero turned in 12 multi-hit games over that stretch, including a season-high 5-for-5, six-RBI performance at Salt Lake on July 4. This season is Montero’s third in the Mariners organization and second with the Rainiers. He was acquired by Seattle along with pitcher Hector Noesi as part of a trade that sent pitchers Michael Pineda and Jose Campos to the New York Yankees on January 20, 2012. Montero was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2006. REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Michael Saunders is batting .258 (8x31) with 5 runs scored, 1 double, 2 RBI and 13 walks in 9 rehab starts with Tacoma. Saunders left game vs. Minnesota on July 10 in the middle of an at-bat in the 8th inning with pain in his left side. GENERALS PAY TRIBUNE TO THE LATE TONY GWYNN: The game of baseball not only lost one of its greatest players in June, but one of the best humanitarian’s baseball has ever known. Tony Gwynn, 54, lost his battle with cancer on June 16, 2014 and to honor Gwynn and his entire family the Jackson Generals are wearing special #19 patches on their home pinstripe jerseys. Tony’s Brother Chris, who played 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, is the Seattle Mariners’ Director of Player Development and has been in his current role since 2012. MLB FUTURES ALL-STAR GAME Seattle Mariners minor league infielder D.J. Peterson played for the U.S. squad, while outfielder Gabby Guerrero represented the World team in the 16th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 13 at Target Field in Minneapolis as part of All-Star weekend. Peterson started at 1B and in the 6th position in the lineup, going 1-for-2 with a double. Guerrero hit 7th as the World team’s starting DH, going 0-for-2 at the plate. The Mariners have had 31 selections to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999. Six players on the current 25-man roster (+DL) played in the Futures Game in the past: Robinson Cano (2003-04), Corey Hart (2002), Felix Hernandez (2004), Logan Morrison (2010), James Paxton (2011) and Michael Saunders (2007).
