Joint Degree vs. Double Degree

One degree awarded by two or more higher education institutions together, for one study programme jointly developed and implemented by all participating higher education institutions.

Two or more degrees awarded by two or more higher education institutions for the same study programme

Full judicial recognition and accreditation by at least 2 of the joint partners from the joint consortium is a prerequisite

Separately developed by and implemented by all participating higher education institutions

Joint Degree Double Degree

European Union Stubb,A.(2003) EU HOW DOES IT WORK (Oxford University Press)

• An experiment in motion an ongoing process without a clear end-state

• A system of shared power characterized by growing complexity and a increasing number of players

• An organization with expanding scope but limited capacity

Page 12: ” Also sprach EDIM….”

Joint Degree administrations

are also effecting tasks Is managing tasks decisions that traditionally belonged solely to the institution

↔EU is trying to stamp its authority on the International scene

Joint Degrees although mostly known as European Degrees but also aiming to be International ↔

EU has taken more members and more tasks its institutional and political development has not keep in pace

Joint degrees operates with a minimum of 3 partners and sometimes even up to 15 partners It seems that there are often situations without a clear and equal task differentiation which often elopes into uncontrollable situations and passive sleeping partners

↔This mismatch between the EU´s task ambitions on the one hand and its institutional capacity on the other –raise questions about the EU´s future and ability to adapt

Ambitions of Joint Degrees Coordinators /Administration vs. the partners/individual actors actual commitment and subjective resistance –often the cause for slow progress and disputes

EU managing tasks that

Traditionally belongs to

the nation-state
